Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Susan in Huntley, IL
The student starts school next week, so we started our session by looking over her school supplies and discussed a set of 3 steps I want her to get into the habit of doing every day to help her keep her papers organized and stay on top of her assignments. I created this 3-step document and emailed it to her mom. The goal is for the student to use the 3 documents I created for her to help with her study skills and organization. The 3 steps I want her to do in every class are: 1. Date every piece of paper handed out and also on every piece of paper she takes notes. 2. Write down homework assignments for every class. Specifically, I told her the minute she walks into class she needs to put her open agenda and leave it open on her desk the whole class. Step 3 will require oversight by her parents - initially they may have to take the lead but eventually she will be able to take more ownership. This step is really critical considering she will be very involved in softball, swimming and track throughout the school year and won't get home until late. School doesn't end until close to 5 p.m., so she'll have late nights with regularity. Step 3 is for her and a parent to spend 5 - 10 minutes emptying her backpack. They need to look over all her papers, complete the ones that need to be done and file them in her notebook or folder by class subject. Next, they need to review her agenda for homework due and compare that to the teacher blogs. This step will help her prioritize work due immediately from projects and preparing for tests. Finally, she can complete her homework assignments due the next day and work on any long-term projects.

Summer Tutoring review by Alison in Huntley, IL
In today's session, I wanted to help the student finish the homework she received during our sessions more efficiently. I devised a new way to read and take notes that incorporated using her Livescript pen. We then watched a new lecture on TEDTalks, and she took notes and recorded the lecture with her pen. We discussed her use of the pen during lectures and I gave her tips on how to use the pen with the recordings and written notes in order to prepare for exams. Homework- Read pages 57-60 of the Developmental Psych text, take "audio notes," as discussed.

The student and I read "True and False Humour" and discussed the essay itself and its broader implications and argument. His prose is quite rich and complex, making it an excellent supplement to the student's British Lit. curriculum. He handled the essay very well. We then translated a short Latin passage and reviewed the future and passive forms, which he has not yet gone over.

Summer Tutoring review by Ender in Huntley, IL
The student and I covered some physics (speed, velocity, scalars, and vectors) as well as significant figures. We had to define and give examples of the physics concepts. Then we had to complete a worksheet with significant figure problems. I taught her the rules for doing sig fig problems and we worked through the sheet together. She did a great job and is making good progress. I told her that practice makes perfect and that she should continue to do practice problems as well as look online for walkthroughs on how to do sig figs.
