How can a tutor help you with summer tutoring?

Summer is often idolized as a crucial part of a student's youth, and it can be romanticized in our culture. However, the summertime can produce problems for young students who aren't able to keep up with their studies. Being away from school for three months can be extremely detrimental to learning, and studies show that as much as two months of math and reading skills are lost during the summer. It can take up to six weeks to relearn old material once the new school year resumes, and this takes away from time that could be spent learning new subjects. It is important for a young student to exercise their brain over the summer in order to prevent this learning loss. This can be achieved by enlisting the help of a personal tutor. Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Melissa in Houston, TX
The student and I had a good session today. We began with a multiplication/division exercise. We then did multiplication/division word problems. The student did well, but must remember to take her time and really think about what a problem is asking about. We then did a reading comprehension exercise. Next, we worked on her story about her "dream summer vacation." She ended up pulling through and coming up with some great ideas. She wants to write the story from the perspective of trying to convince others to go to the place where she would have her summer vacation. I told her we would work on this reframing in our next session. We finished by doing an exercise on adjectives.

Summer Tutoring review by Joaquin in Houston, TX
In this session we listened to the student's homework. We discussed what we heard, what we thought was good, and what we thought needed improvement. We tried different tempos for recording and I explained how to play following a steady pulse. Then, he learned how to set up on his computer a "click" that works as a steady pulse. After that, I introduced two new notes on the staff: A and B. We practiced reading a few rhythms with the new notes. He did very well. His homework consists of recording two more exercises containing the notes G, A, and B. His video project has almost all the images he needs. We worked on special effects, and we talked about images and music working together. Then we rearranged images for a better effect.

The student and I discussed corticosteroids, which have several roles in the body. Glucocorticosteroids (cortisol) affect metabolism which mineralcorticosteroids (aldosterone) affect water retention and different salt concentrations. If patients have low levels of these steroids, they must have a replacement therapy. Also, sometimes these steroids are used in immunosuppression. The next topic we discussed was lipid disorders. We looked at cholesterol lowering therapies (HMG CoA reductase inhibitors (statins), niacin, bile salt sequestrants, fibric acid agents, and cholesterol absorption inhibitors) and discussed their mechanism of action and side effects.

Summer Tutoring review by Jessica in Houston, TX
During this session we covered math and reading. During the math portion we reviewed addition and subtraction of single and double digits. We also performed word problems and discussed how to read through them in order to better understand what the question is asking. The student did great and understands her addition and subtraction quite well! She was able to read through the basic word problems with little or no issues. During the reading portion, we read a passage and answered several question pertaining to the paragraph. We tried a new approach to answering the questions. After reading the question, I had her answer the question in her head prior to reading the actual answers. This seemed to aid in getting the correct answers and gave her the confidence to more easily answer the questions. Over, all she did great this session!

The student had two major projects: one in her Heroes and Myths class and another in her International Relations class. We went over the background information on the Killing Fields for the IR project, and worked on action steps for the Heroes project.
