ASPIRE Tutoring review by Joseph in Portland, OR
Today, the student and I finished reviewing the content of the SAT Math test, completing algebra and covering geometry and data analysis as well. She is better with math than she gives herself credit for being. We also took a closer look at the content of the essay section. She did very well on her last ACT essay, and the format is largely similar between the two tests, so we are not too worried there.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Patricia in Portland, OR
The student and I have gone over every section of the ACT now, so I asked her where she would like to spend more attention. She suggested reading and science. We looked at the reading and science section of the next practice test, but instead of having her take it by herself and timed, we went through it together. I saw great improvement in her ability to retain information from the passages in reading and her ability to analyze the tables and graphs in science.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Sonia in Portland, OR
Today, the student and I focused solely on critical reading. We went over strategies for answering the vocabulary questions- figuring out what type of word should go in the blank(s) before looking at the answer choices, testing out different words, using prefixes to figure out meanings, etc. We then reviewed strategies for answering the short and long passage questions. An important concept we touched on is how the answer is always directly in the passage, she just has to be able to find it. I had her practice a few critical reading exercises to apply these concepts. I left her with critical reading, writing, and math practice sections, in addition to vocabulary studying.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Ami in Portland, OR
The student had just completed an entire practice test over the course of the last few session and scored a 23 overall. After she had completed each one of those sections, we went over each in detail and discussed the relevant strategies for each section. At the very beginning of today's session, we briefly went through her last practice test and discussed the questions she had missed once again, just to remind her of the common questions asked by the ACT test writers. After going through all the sections, we decided to focus on English during this session since that was the one that the student was least comfortable with. We talked about how she should look out for the 3 things that always show up on the ACT English: redundancy, passive tense, and subject-verb agreement. I then had her do an English practice section, which she scored 6 points higher on than she had previously! That is a very promising result.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Jerry in Portland, OR
We went ACT science and ACT math. I prepared difficult questions in ACT math and we went through a timed ACT science section together. The student struggles with the ACT science section more. I saw an improvement in ACT math. The student has the book to practice from.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Kathleen in Portland, OR
Today we covered the English, Math, and Science sections of the ACT. The student is able to answer almost all of the questions on a given Math section, which is a huge improvement over when we started working together. Geometry problems, including story problems, are still hardest for her, so that is what we worked on. I pointed out that time is her greatest enemy right now and in future sessions or independent work, she should shift her focus from content to speed. The student is doing really well on the science section, and we agreed that at this points she needs lots of practice in order to improve. Her English score was still a 21 at her most recent test. Almost all of her errors involved apostrophes, commas, or logic/organization, so I reviewed comma and apostrophe rules and then went over some strategies for logic questions. She will study the rules further on her own.
