ACT Prep Tutor • +53 Subjects

I have been tutoring since high school, when I tutored students in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Chemistry. Since then, I have tutored for four years at the college level in both German and Music Theory/Aural Skills. I have also twice co-taught an intensive one-month long German 101 course, where I designed the lesson plans, and graded homework, quizzes and tests.I am a great tutor because of my broad experience in tutoring many different subjects, so that I have a wide variety of approaches to help all types of students master the material. I also believe that, in my German tutoring especially, I'm very systematic, so that my students have a strong grammar foundation on which to build further skills and concepts. I have also lived in Germany for a year, and am able to bring world-life experiences into tutoring sessions, so that I can instill in my students a desire to learn more of the German language through a glimpse of what is possible once one has a basis in the language. I also have taken German Diction classes because of my background in vocal performance, and this means that I am especially adept at dealing with difficulties in pronunciation, or when students are having trouble hearing the difference between those pesky umlauts!

AP French Tutor • +21 Subjects

I have been informally tutoring my classmates in French since I began studying the language, about six years ago. I would help them understand grammar and pronunciation mainly in the beginning stages of learning the language. I was hired last year as the French tutor at my college and I have experience tutoring students in beginning and intermediate level French. I am very comfortable with the language and my experience has shown me what does and what does not work when tutoring a student. I have also attended several lectures regarding the ways in which students learn, which I incorporate into all of my tutoring sessions. I believe that my general experience studying and teaching a foreign language has prepared me to be able to tutor Mandarin Chinese also, as I have been studying that for three years. As for French tutoring, I tend to focus on classwork if a student is struggling with a specific area in their current lesson. With more advanced students, I like to hold conversations with them to expose their linguistic ability and help them speak the language more comfortably and naturally. I recently had the privilege of taking two years of cultural immersion courses at the Alliance Franaise de Chicago, and I have been to France multiple times, so I am very familiar with French and Francophone culture. I sometimes like to explore current events in the French world if I am having a conversation with a student. I can teach lessons around French and francophone film, literature, and music. In Mandarin, I have experience speaking with friends and acquaintances completely in Mandarin. Living in Chicago has given me access to Chinatown, a wonderful neighborhood overflowing with rich Chinese culture that I have been exposed to since birth.Currently I am a sophomore at Beloit College, majoring in International Relations and French, and minoring in Mandarin Chinese. I am working towards an undergraduate degree, which will be followed by a graduate degree. I am anticipating studying abroad in the future in both China and France in an effort to use those languages to study International Relations. Outside of school, my favorite thing to do is travel. There is no better way to understand another culture than to visit it. I also like to cook, take pictures, and explore Chicago.

ACT Reading Tutor • +20 Subjects

I graduated from Wheaton College with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy as well as a minor in Bible/Theology. Since graduation, I have been teaching English overseas in South Korea and the nation of Georgia. In those roles, I was especially proud of the improvements my students made towards clear self-expression in speaking and writing (which was reflected in high TOEFL scores). I've got a knack for identifying an essay's strengths and weaknesses, and for giving specific feedback to make written ideas come to life. In addition, I have a passion for helping students improve their performance in ACT Reading, Writing, and Science. Whatever the subject, I thrive on leading students to moments of clarity and a sense of accomplishment. When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy exploring nature, playing strategy board games, and reading non-fiction.

Biology Tutor • +22 Subjects

I graduated from Loyola University of Chicago, where I majored in biology. Since childhood, biology has always intrigued me, and this passion led me to pursue it further in my academic journey. Now, I am in my third year of medical school, continuing my path toward a career in medicine. Over the years, I have worked, tutored, and pursued my ambition in the medical field, with a strong focus on helping others understand complex scientific concepts.Outside of academics, I enjoy playing the guitar, traveling, drawing, writing, and watching soccer. These activities help me unwind and keep a balanced lifestyle. My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that learning should be enjoyable and engaging. I encourage students to view learning not as a task to be completed, but as a process to be appreciated. I've found that enjoying the journey, working diligently, and genuinely understanding the materialrather than forcing itmakes learning more meaningful and effective. When teaching, I focus on building strong rapport with students and revisiting foundational concepts when needed to ensure comprehension. I have volunteered as a tutor and worked as a teaching assistant, always going the extra mile to help my peers achieve higher success.I am passionate about new challenges and the process of learning, and I constantly remind myself why I started on this journey and where I'm headed. The reason I joined Varsity Tutors is that, through my experience volunteering as a tutor and working with younger students, I learned that teaching is a responsibility. Education is one of the most valuable assets a person can have, and I make it a priority to connect with students on a personal level, offering not just academic support but also emotional encouragement. As a listener and a mentor, I provide constructive feedback and ensure that my students feel supported. These qualities will enable me to bring my best to this job and continue to inspire others as I have in the past.

Algebra Tutor • +15 Subjects

I am currently a senior at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I am in my last semester in pursuit of a Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering. I have had tutoring experience through my service fraternity Beta Kappa Zeta. During my time as a fraternity member I tutored Math and Chemistry to younger members. While I specialize in Math and Science my favorite subject is Chemistry. I like Chemistry because it allows me to gain satisfaction by solving problems that others might consider difficult. Chemistry is a great challenge but is a prime example that even the most difficult concepts can become easy if they are broken down into its simplest pieces. This coincides with my tutoring philosophy. I believe teamwork is the most powerful tool when learning. When teaching I like to model problems with "think out louds" so the student can get an idea how I would approach the problem. Secondly, I like to do the problem with the student to make sure they have grasped a concept before having them attempt problems on their own. Working together allows me to assess what concepts tend to be tricky for an individual that they may not have been able to articulate themselves. This collaboration of both student and tutor is what makes this system so effective. Outside of school I have a passion for sports particularly football and basketball. I love the idea of putting the correct people together and working hard to achieve a common goal as much as the sports themselves. I have been on many intramural teams from softball to soccer, and have found that some of my best relationships have started on the court/field whether it be competitive or recreational.

I graduated from William Jewell College with a Bachelor's in Music. While I have a broad spectrum of areas that I enjoy studying and tutoring, math is one of my favorites. Back when I was in high school, my friends always came to me for help with learning Math, and I always enjoyed helping them. Calculus is one of my favorites in particular, because I enjoy seeing my students realize that, while it is kind of intimidating at first, Calculus is just as easy as the math that came before it. I also enjoy helping students learn to get comfortable with standardized tests like the ACT. I keep both of us in a good mood so that the test doesn't seem as frustrating as it used to be for them. The change in a student's outlook when they start enjoying what they are doing always cheers me up.In addition to tutoring and teaching, I also enjoy playing my clarinet, reading, listening to music and playing video games.

I recently finished my M.S. in Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. I am staying in the Chicago area because I truly love the city and envision staying here for a long time.As a tutor, I have had students ranging from sophomores in high school to adults transitioning into a new career. My Engineering curriculum at Northwestern was heavily centered around Math, Chemistry, Biology and Physics, so I can work with a student on more than one class at a time. I also have a lot of experience with test prep and love working with students who need help with standardized tests.I'm a laid back individual, but I like to push my students. I know that every student is able to do well and I really enjoy helping them along their path to success. But being laid back, I am also good at relaxing a student and helping point out what is important and what is not.In my free time, I enjoy writing music. I am also a die hard Packers fan originally being from Green Bay, and a Bulls fan.
