ASPIRE Tutoring review by Nora in Buffalo, NY
The student and I continued our work on the verbal skills section of the test, with emphasis on vocabulary-based questions. We focused on reinforcing a few of the strategies we discussed last time. In particular, we practiced using the context in which he remembers hearing or seeing semi-familiar but unknown words used to help him determine their tone and make an educated guess as to their meaning. We then practiced brainstorming other, more familiar words that use those same roots, and discussed how to translate an awareness of word roots and related words into test-taking strategies for the verbal section. I concluded by asking him to start reviewing vocabulary on his own time.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Kendra in Buffalo, NY
During today's initial session, I first spoke briefly with the student and her parents about her previous experience with standardized tests and her goals for this attempt. The student explained that she felt she could hold her own in the Reading and Math sections, and wanted to focus on the English section, including both the multiple choice portion and the essay. I affirmed that I would be happy to help her in her attempts to improve this, and explained that I wanted her to complete a diagnostic test during this session so we would have a starting point for discussing her strengths, weaknesses, and areas where she could focus. She agreed, and after she completed a shortened practice test consisting of one Reading, one Mathematics, and one Writing multiple choice session, I scored the test and found that her predictions about her strengths and weaknesses were very apt. We began to review the answers to the questions she had missed, and we will complete this review at the beginning of our next session.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Ben in Buffalo, NY
The student wrote two practice essays for the ISEE. He feels much more confident in this area. He enjoys expressing his point of view and showing off his command of language, which is very strong for his grade level. While I recommended he spend at least 5-10 minutes brainstorming and outlining his essay, he felt more comfortable writing ad-lib, which I admitted could be a valid strategy so long as it yields good results. Nevertheless, he did end up spending some useful time on brainstorming as per my advice. While his essays are neat, properly structured, and feature a specific thesis and references to examples, I noticed that his body paragraphs have a tendency to stray from his main argument; he may do better to either tighten up his ideas in the planning process, or leave space to write his introductory paragraph AFTER he has already written out all of his ideas in the body paragraphs; moreover, I noticed that his own concept of his argument tends to pick up steam after he has already been writing for awhile, which would also suggest the usefulness of this latter approach. Saturday is our final session before holiday break, during which we will wrap up and score his first practice test.
