At Friday's session, the student and I reviewed the critical reading section she completed for homework. We reviewed strategies for approaching longer reading sections including effectively marking a document, approaching different question types, and verifying answers with evidence from the document. Our goal moving forward is to raise her competency to level 3 and develop her approach to level 4 and 5 questions. Next, we spent time working on the open-ended math section. Her ability to assess problems and take first steps towards solving them has greatly improved.

During this session, the student and I worked on the ACT reading section. She worked through 2 sections, and did relatively well on both (scoring in the mid 20s). We then went through both of the sections and discussed any errors she had made, and talked about general strategies for the ACT reading. She finds the natural sciences passages the most challenging, so I suggested that she starts with those so that she can allot the time necessary for them. This strategy seemed to work well for her, and she scored better on the second natural sciences passage she worked on.

As the student and I got acquainted, I looked over her practice ACT score report and reviewed and supplemented the notes her previous tutor had prepared for the ACT Math section. We also looked at the ACT Writing section for the first time, since she had just found out she would be taking that part of the test. For next week, I assigned two practice essays, and she volunteered to do an extra Science section as well to relieve her own worries about that test.

Great session! Today we returned to practicing math. I have definitely seen improvement in the student's comprehension and application. Today we reviewed several concepts that she has learned in the past; Factor trees, functions, finding angle measures in triangles and other geometric patterns. For next week, she is going to write an essay; We will talk essay strategy next week.

Today the student and I went over the math section of her last practice test. I had her explain to me what she did for each question she missed, and then I went over with her how to solve the question using either back-solving or setting up the actual math. She is very proficient with math. She also over thinks questions and makes them more complicated than they should be. She needed a brush up on logarithms and ratios, but otherwise is solid with math concepts. In the last twenty minutes we went over a prose fiction passage from her test and explained all of her wrong answers. I left her with another full length exam and an extra math practice section so that we could go over it the next session.

As this was my last session with the student before his ACT test date, we mainly reviewed tactics for approaching the test. First, I went through any questions he had from reviewing the practice test he went through for homework. We went through each section and addressed any parts that were giving him issues. We then reviewed general practices for taking the test and also discussed methods for approaching each section. I feel he is well prepared to take the test, and we addressed any issues he was having.
