Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

North Aurora, IL Test Prep tutoring
At our first session, the student and I worked through an SAT math section together. Along the way, we went over the structure of the exam, covered some basic test taking strategies, and reviewed algebraic and geometric principles. We will be reviewing a wide range of topics, including probability, combinatorics, circles, squares roots, and exponents. To help improve her timing on the test, I've asked to her to complete two timed math sections for our next session, in addition to reviewing the math sections of her previously completed practice exams.

Today was our final session and it was also a short session. The student decided to focus on getting in more practice with the essay, as he could complete a whole essay within the time we had, leaving plenty of time for me to review it and discuss areas of improvement with him. His goal is to score a perfect essay score, so we spent quite a bit of time discussing ways for him to reach this goal. He spent roughly the first half hour of our session planning and composing an essay in response to a practice ACT prompt. I then read through the essay and found that it did show improvement over his last attempt. I went over the essay in detail with him, pointing out the many things he had done well--clearly acknowledging the prompt in the introduction, stating a thesis, developing relevant and apt main points to support the thesis, and showing some mastery of vocabulary and sentence structure. I then focused on a few polishing touches he could improve to allow him to get a perfect score on his essay--crafting a more specific thesis, using more varied and high-level vocabulary, and avoiding redundancy. I then gave him a more in-depth example of how his existing essay could have been worded to possibly better effect, by re-working one of his paragraphs starting with the topic sentence. For the most part, I left the specific choice of words to him, making suggestions only occasionally. By the end, he had re-worked his entire first body paragraph, arguing for the same point with the same evidence, but with clearer and more forceful word choice, a more logical ordering of ideas, and more evocative language. I told him that this writing style should be his aim if he wanted to get a 6 from both graders, and pointed out that it did not require significantly more words or more time spent on writing them, but only more careful thought about the optimal way to state his points. He agreed, seeing how much more effectively some of his thoughts could have been phrased to engage and persuade the reader.
