Many of these students were the first in their families to attend college. I've been teaching math for 25+ years, both in a classroom setting and, more recently, on-line. I prefer to use a whiteboard and other visuals to present the problems and explain the methodology and steps that lead to the solution. If you are my student I would encourage you to first think through the problem and work it through on your own whenever possible, as it helps to foster self-confidence.
