I checked the student's math homework and he did extremely well. Then we worked on the verbal section. The student is applying test-taking strategies effectively and between this and his uncanny intuition, he is able to guess correctly on many words that he's never seen before. We have been working well together and I'm glad that he is now comfortable with the idea of tutoring.

The student and I continued working through the science portion of the ACT. He scored a 25 on the test he did as homework. He has continued a strong performance in this part of the exam. For the ones he missed, it became apparent that he simply gave up. When we talked our way through them, he was able to identify the correct answer. He expressed that he gets overwhelmed when he doesn't know the answer. I explained to him that it is extremely important to maintain focus during this portion of the exam, especially since it is the last section and he will invariably be exhausted by the time he gets to it. Overall, the student has shown great improvement both in his scores and his attitude and I encourage him to keep the momentum going!

This was a pretty standard session. I spent the first hour going over a math section with the student. Next we went over an essay I had assigned to the student. It was an improvement from his last effort, but it still needed to be longer and clearer. Finally I had him do a practice sections in both critical reading, and sentence correction.

The student and I have decided to work our way through a full practice ACT. Today we covered the English section, discovering that the student struggles with word-choice and phrasing questions moreso than any others. We also began looking at Math; He will finish a Math test for our next session.

The student has so much potential, and I'm really excited to see her grow over the next few weeks. This was her first exposure to the ACT, so we talked about some general approaches before busying ourselves with the ins and outs of science. She's phenomenal at understanding and solving the problems, and has a great capacity for conceptualization that helps her get nearly every question right. The only issue was time, so we worked through some strategies that will cut down on how many times she ends up reading the question and vacillates between answers. We covered some basics for reading too, so that she can do a section of both on her own before we meet next.

The student and I worked on highlighting and understanding reading passages. I also asked him to follow an essay prompt. He was proficient at structuring an essay and supporting his argument, but he has some work to do regarding spelling and grammar. The student and I looked at the math homework I had given him and I realized that he is years away from learning the math required for the ISEE. Because of this, I will be providing math lessons to catch him up to the ISEE level.
