ECAA Tutoring FAQ
For many children, the Early Childhood Admissions Assessment (ECAA) is the first standardized test or assessment they will ever face. If you are interested in independent schooling at an accomplished institution and your child is entering a grade between pre-kindergarten and fourth grade, his or her score in the ECAA could have major implications on their enrollment qualifications. An ECAA tutor can address anxieties that you or your child may have about the test, explain the content, and model the assessment with your student to give them the tools to succeed on test day. Contact Varsity Tutors today and let us help connect you and your child to an experienced ECAA tutor.
ECAA tutors have not only demonstrated knowledge in the details of the assessment, but are experienced in working with young children. A tutor can analyze your student's academic aptitudes and interests and discuss with you how to best prepare him or her for the ECAA. Not every child will learn material in the same way, and the individual instruction available through private tutoring can help to provide the best possible educational fit for your child's test preparation. A talented tutor can cater ECAA tutoring to your child's specific strengths and weaknesses, integrating engaging games and activities to keep your student excited about future sessions. Your child may be unsure as to what study method works best for them. An experienced ECAA tutor can help them identify this, which will not only help on this test, but in subsequent standardized tests as well.
ECAA tutoring can be conducted much like the actual assessment, which usually involves your student working with one assessor, especially in the lower levels. When your student becomes comfortable with the tutor and the practice assessment, he or she can work on practicing the skills and abilities assessed by the ECAA. In addition to helping your child approach the test with confidence, a tutor can work with your child on the skills and abilities tested, reviewing the areas that could benefit from extra attention. Younger children are assessed on their ability to recognize patterns, identify words, and match pictures, and an ECAA tutor can review these skills with your student through a variety of fun activities. For later grades, your student will also be tested on his or her ability to perform arithmetic, identify more complex patterns with shapes, and complete pictures.
The ECAA is unique in that it tests visual-spatial reasoning along with mathematical and reading abilities. However, many of the tasks are performed without pencil or paper, so preparing for such elements will be different than approaching other standardized tests that require written responses. A tutor can model the test by asking practice questions and assessing your student's responses, and can constantly evaluate your student's abilities to provide instruction that is challenging, but never boring or overwhelming. The ECAA for grades three and four includes an additional reading comprehension section. Your child will read a passage and be asked questions about it. In order to prepare for this component, a tutor can review vocabulary and introduce new words, ask what, how, and why questions to test comprehension, and teach strategies to help your student better understand what he or she reads.
Varsity Tutors places an emphasis on convenience and flexibility. If you can't meet your child's tutor for an in-person session, our live learning platform allows you and your child to meet their tutor face-to-face online. This gives you the flexibility to meet your child's tutor at a time and location that works best for both you and your child. Recent ECAA Tutoring Session Notes
We started this session by reviewing the student's homework from the previous session. I had him correct his answers that were either incorrect or incomplete. His corrections were very good and he showed evidence of critical thinking. We then reviewed all of the strategies we have reviewed together and talked about how to use those properly on the test. I also gave him some general test-taking tips.
The student and I finished reviewing the math section of the diagnostic test. He seems to have a high level of math skills, but he forgets specific concepts at times. With practice, he will be able to greatly improve his math score. After finishing the math, we did the intro section for English. He is learning strategies, and I am reminding him of grammar rules. He's doing well. We're going to meet again tomorrow.
Brainstormed how to work on essays and practiced fiction passage questions (it was the one portion on the Reading test where she did poorly.) Covered some of the math fundamentals, as well as the utility of plugging in numbers.
Today we discussed basic test strategies, test format, and went through part of the student's English section from test 1. We addressed several basic grammar questions (mostly dealing with modifiers and prepositional phrases), as well as discussing rhetoric questions. The student took notes as we talked about adjectives and adverbs, and asked really good questions. I think the main focus for our sessions will be filling in knowledge gaps and practicing test strategies. She definitely has the ability to do well on this test, given the proper preparation.
In our session today we continued to review all the sections of the ISEE, focusing particularly on how to approach questions and test-taking strategies. The student does very well in the reading section, but has some troubles in the quantitative and math sections. We are working on getting her accustomed to the format of the quantitative section. Towards the end of the session we went over the essay and she will write an essay for our next meeting.
We worked on the reading section. Given lots of time, his accuracy is very high, but he has trouble working within the time constraints. We reviewed the wording of questions--the ACT is very formulaic and asks certain questions in very predictable ways--and talked about spending 4-5 minutes reading the passage so he'd have about 30 seconds per question. Even when he completed reading the passage in 5 minutes, though, he only got through about 4 questions, averaging a minute per question. I think he's a lot more anxious about this test than he lets on, and he's just going to have to practice a ton so that the pacing and the type of questions are very comfortable and recognizable to him.
