The student has her test tomorrow, so we worked through a practice test, as well as a practice problem set. As we went through the test, she told me what she knew, and then I helped her clarify concepts/reasoning through guiding questions. She was able to synthesize many articulate and cohesive answers, drawing on her understanding of previous questions to bolster her responses to new questions. We also worked on testing strategies, particularly for short answer questions, where I think she often feels overwhelmed. For the short answer questions, we talked about her using the strategy of brainstorming everything she knows before starting to write her complete response. I think this was very useful to her because it broke down the task into something more manageable and showed her that she does, in fact, know how to answer most, if not all of these questions. She will be reaching out to me regarding her next session.

This session was all about translations and transformations. We used the parent functions of absolute value, quadratic, and square roots to describe what is happening, whether it is moving horizontally, vertically, stretching out, or compressing. We talked about a being the "attitude" of the function; if positive, that meant it was happy and opening up; if negative, it was sad and opening down. By the end, after some doing some ticket out of session problems, I think she had a much better grasp of translations and transformations. Great job and effort!

The student took a practice test today, and scored fairly well. While we need to spend a little time looking at Orgo and GenChem, there are some really good scores here! We spent today looking at the Organic Chemistry section of the test, and went over trends in carbonyl chemistry, proton NMR, and many reaction schemes. We also talked about test-taking strategy, specifically predicting the answer choice first.

This was our first session. We talked about the resources the student had used to study in the past and the areas where he struggled. The most difficult section for him was definitely the math section and he would like to focus our sessions on this section. We did some questions in his workbook and discussed strategies for solving different types of problems. I also provided him with a formula sheet that details all of the basic formulas he will need to know for the math section of the exam. He is going to work on trying to memorize them so that he can move through problems faster. In future sessions we will work on speed and ways to estimate the correct answer quickly, since timing is an issue for him.

Today was very productive. We focused on what the student has studied in biology since the last time we met. That consisted of questions on autotrophic nutrition, muscles, digestion, focusing on understanding the muscle contraction, photosynthesis, and the major players in digesting food. Next time we will focus on the rest of biology.
