Education is the greatest asset a person can have. It's important, but it should also be fun to learn. Many people think education in general is boring when they have to learn about something. I try to keep it light in nature, using humor to help the student be comfortable, but also assist them in gaining confidence while they learn.Using personal experience tends to be helpful also when tutoring. If the student can somehow relate, it is easier for them to retain the information. When I'm not trying to help someone learn, I enjoy spending time with my son reading, photography, wine tastings and crafting. Happy Learning

I am a mechanical engineering student at Stony Brook University in an accelerated B.E./M.S. program. Currently I am finishing up both of my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I decided to become a tutor because I love academia, and I use math as well as physics daily. After my first few sessions I came to love it, and I have been doing it for a number of years now. I have tutored students ranging from elementary school through college, but my favorite level to help students is high school. In my sessions I like to show students the reason behind everything. I believe if you know why you're doing something, you can more easily understand how to do it. When I have some free time I like to work on small engineering projects. I just got my hands on a programmable micro-controller, and I have been making it do some pretty neat things! I also like to go biking.

AP Biology Tutor • +15 Subjects
I am a current graduate student at Duke University in the Cellular and Molecular Biology Program, and I am a graduate of Assumption College with a Bachelor of Arts in Biotechnology and a minor in Chemistry. I was a tutor for the past three years at Assumption College. Working with students one-on-one and leading large group reviews has developed my ability to explain complex material to students in a simple and understandable manner. I have always enjoyed explaining material to others, and I find it satisfying when the students finally understand the concepts. I learned that in science it is crucial to be able to articulate concepts to people of diverse backgrounds. I also believe that it is essential to pass my knowledge and passion to others so they can make their own contribution to the scientific community. In my spare time I enjoy being active. I usually swim, run, and attend boxing classes.

Conversational Spanish Tutor • +10 Subjects
I am a graduate of the University of Connecticut where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Spanish and Judaic Studies along with a minor in Middle Eastern Studies. I am now in the process of applying to grad school where I hope to pursue my MS in Spanish-English Translation. I am a lover of the humanities, from languages and history to theology and literature. That being said, I am most passionate about tutoring Spanish. Having studied the language since I was a child, I then decided to make it my main academic focus in college where I studied not only Spanish language and grammar but also Spanish and Latin American history, civilization, and culture. I have also studied Hebrew both in pursuit of my degree in Judaic Studies and informally for religious purposes. As someone who has acquired all of his language ability from learning in a classroom setting, I understand the most common challenges that students tend to face. I am very patient and professional in my teaching manner having needed tutoring myself while growing up. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, writing, drawing, board games, cards, and enjoying the great outdoors.

I love teaching and learning. To me, it is a life-long pursuit, with an infinite reward. I understand that science and math can be challenging, as they were for me when I was in school. I was fortunate to have some incredible teachers that helped me in ways that empowered my learning potential for the rest of my life.My approach is to help you figure out what tools you need to succeed, in both the specific subject matter as well as skills that are required for acquiring knowledge in general. By learning concepts, and how things work on the most basic level, we can build together a more complex understanding. I avoid memorization when possible because I don't believe that will stick with you in the end. I want you to be able to think through problems, derive formulas when necessary, and apply both rational and creative thinking to understand material.Although I have not tutored extensively, I bring 15 years of practical science research experience, contributing to 9 publications in the field of cancer research. In addition, I am a performer and an artist, so I love engaging with people, and finding entertaining ways to approach subjects.Outside of tutoring, I enjoy working in a science lab at Rockefeller University, making my own performance work, cooking meals with friends, and absorbing all that NYC has to offer.

I am a graduate of West Chester University of Pennsylvania. I received a Bachelor of Arts in History and Education, and am certified to teach Social Studies in grades 7-12 in Pennsylvania. I am currently working towards my certification to teach Spanish in Pennsylvania as well. I have tutored 4th graders in Spanish during my senior year in high school and more recently taught Global Studies at Upper Darby High School near Philadelphia. My favorite subjects in school were always Spanish and History, and I am incredibly happy and excited to be able to teach both of those subjects now as a Varsity Tutor. I believe that the goal of education is to give students life long learning skills and most importantly teaching students to be critical thinkers. When I am not teaching you will find me playing sports, usually tennis or ice hockey, or playing guitar. Also, in the winter time I try to make it to the mountains to snowboard as often as I can.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Albany is home to 13 school districts serving over 17,000 students across 51 schools, and Varsity Tutors connects students from all of them with personalized tutoring. Whether your student attends a school in the Albany City School District, Bethlehem, Guilderland, or another local district, we match them with tutors who understand New York's curriculum standards and can support their specific academic goals.
New York has rigorous academic standards across math, English language arts, science, and social studies, and tutors work directly with students to build mastery in these areas. Whether preparing for Regents exams, state assessments, or strengthening foundational skills, personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to focus on exactly where each student needs support—something that's harder to achieve in classrooms with the district average of 14.7 students per teacher.
Albany students commonly seek help with math (especially algebra, geometry, and regents prep), English language arts and writing, chemistry and biology, and test preparation for the SAT and ACT. We also work with students on study skills, organization, and confidence-building—especially important as they progress through New York's increasingly rigorous coursework in middle and high school.
The first session is a get-to-know-you meeting where the tutor learns about your student's academic history, current challenges, learning style, and goals. They'll assess where your student stands, discuss what success looks like, and create a personalized plan together. This foundation ensures every session that follows is focused and productive.
Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions—we work with families to find an arrangement that fits their budget and schedule. Many Albany families find that personalized tutoring prevents the need for more expensive interventions later, and the focused 1-on-1 approach means faster progress compared to group settings.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have deep subject expertise and proven teaching experience. Tutors are carefully selected and vetted, and many have backgrounds in education, advanced degrees in their subject areas, or years of professional experience. Each tutor is matched to your student based on their specific needs and learning goals.
Absolutely. Regents exams are a key part of New York's education system, and tutors specialize in helping students master the content and test-taking strategies needed to succeed. Whether your student is preparing for Regents in math, English, science, or social studies, personalized instruction allows tutors to focus on the specific topics and question types where they need the most support.
Simply reach out to Varsity Tutors with information about your student's grade level, subject, and goals. We'll match them with a qualified tutor, schedule an initial session, and get started. Most families see the benefit of tutoring quickly—especially when the tutor is focused entirely on their student's needs rather than managing a classroom of 15 or more.
