Previously, she completed an associate's in Communication, Film & Digital Media Studies (2016). While at UNG, she worked as a Writing Center Peer Consultant, Supplemental Instruction Facilitator, English Department Student Administrative Assistant, Writing Fellow, and Ambassador for the Center for Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities (in addition to programming stimulus displays for EEG experiments in the neuroscience lab). I graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in Art History and Child Development and completed my master's degree in Communications at the American University of Paris.I am a former classroom teacher at a wonderful Houston charter school, as well as several different schools around the world. I have worked with students from kindergarten to middle school in many different subject areas. I love the learning process, and figuring out how to best design a lesson for a specific student so that learning is fun, engaging and meaningful.For me, learning is not about drilling memorization facts. My ultimate goal with students is to make a connection with them and bring alive pre-algebra, phonics, the questioning mechanics of the SAT - whatever the student is learning. When a connection is made, we can bridge the gaps and make learning fun and lasting. Everyone can be a math person, everyone can love grammar, everyone can write a stellar paper. Every student is different, and every student can achieve success.In my free time I love running (I'm training for my second half marathon!), reading and watching documentaries. I love to teach writing because I have been very successful at getting good results with my students. I have helped them improve their writing skills in ways that they never thought possible. I am an empathetic and active listener who helped them turn their thoughts and ideas into exceptional writing material. I used a step by step method by starting with writing a good topic sentence and a solid paragraph and then leading into the parts of an essay. I also had them write for different purposes like explaining how to do something or writing a descriptive essay. I found teaching writing to be a most fulfilling task and one that left me inspired by my students achievements as much as they felt inspired by my enthusiasm and positive and encouraging approach. I also have a Ph.Din American and European literature and can tutor in those subjects as well.

Hope. If I were to boil all my teaching philosophies down to one word, it would be hope. When in grade-school, I was the student who needed the extra push from a caring teacher to be successful in the classroom; this is why I do what I do - to be that teacher for the student just like me! I received my Elementary Certification from The University of Missouri, in 1979. I later returned to school and received my Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Arkansas in 2011.I tutor Math (grades 1-3), Phonics, and Reading (grades 1-5). My favorite subject to tutor is beginning level reading which includes phonics. The reason I enjoy teaching beginning level reading is because I believe that mastering phonics gives children a foundation in which to build on in order to become fluent readers. Since graduation, I was a physics/chemistry teacher and soccer coach at a private school in Virginia for a year, where I led the soccer team to an undefeated season. Before teaching and coaching professionally, I was a Teaching Assistant for the Cornell Math and Physics Departments, where I taught many subjects including calculus, mechanics, electromagnetism. Throughout my time at Cornell and as a teacher, I tutored subjects ranging from the SAT to AP Physics and Algebra II, which is where my true talents lie: in small group or one-on-one settings where I can give students the full attention they deserve and tailor my approach specifically to their learning styles. This is why I am now pursuing tutoring as a part-time occupation at Varsity Tutors.
