While Spanish 1 functions as students’ introduction to the language, Spanish 2 amps up the difficulty and complexity of the material, all while expecting students to continue to make use of the elementary knowledge they gained in Spanish 1. Students are introduced to more tenses and expected to differentiate between their proper usages. This can become particularly challenging for tenses like the preterite and imperfect past tenses. Irregular verbs can also cause difficulties for students; while many of the verbs introduced in Spanish 1 follow the rules of conjugation that students concurrently learn, Spanish 2 begins to present often-used words that don’t follow these patterns and must be memorized individually. Students continue to increase their Spanish vocabularies as well, and all of the words they learned in Spanish 1 are still “fair game” and can appear on homework, quizzes, and tests. Spanish 2 can also mark the introduction of an entirely new pronoun and corresponding verb conjugations: e.g. “vosotros,” which, roughly translated, is a formal way of addressing “all of you.” With the expansion of students’ skills in these various areas, they are expected to have more involved conversations. No longer are conversations simple exchanges of common phrases that often follow rigid formats; Spanish 2 expects students to begin expressing their own opinions about subjects with confidence, if not ease, in a foreign language. Reading and writing skills are expected to follow suit and to develop more complexity and depth.
Students who had a hard time in Spanish 1 or consider their foundational knowledge shaky can have a difficult time in Spanish 2, as the class is notably sequential. If you could benefit from expert guidance in Spanish 2 tailored to address just the aspects of your class with which you struggle, look no further than Varsity Tutors’ Spanish 2 tutoring. The one-on-one environment in which all of our tutoring takes place allows you to have the full attention of your instructor. You can have questions answered as they occur to you and receive immediate feedback on your work, allowing emergent misunderstandings to be cut off before they become bad habits. Plus, your tutor can take stock of your current Spanish abilities and design a learning plan that addresses the skills and concepts you most need to work on—even those from Spanish 1. Varsity Tutors’ Spanish 2 tutoring can be designed to focus solely on your success, allowing you to work through the material at your own pace and spend as much or as little time on each topic as you need to fully understand it. Your tutor can provide support and guidance every step of the way.
