I believe that teaching and learning can be done in different ways. It really depends on the student’s style of learning. Therefore, I try to make sure that I can provide my student with a variety of resources such as online notes, videos, or creative analogies to help explain any topic. It is imperative to understand the different learning methods and teach the student in their optimal style.I have had numerous tutoring experiences throughout my life. My biggest experience has been being an older sister. Throughout our lives, one of my priorities is to make sure that she has all the resources that she needs. I’ve gone through her classes before, so I’ve always tried to help her with her homework or help her prepare for an exam whether it be during middle school or now in college. Even now when I am in graduate school and she is in undergraduate college, we have regular online sessions where I explain her the concepts as best as possible. Also at UVA, I was a personal one-on-one tutor for a few students for Organic Chemistry. This was a very difficult class for many students because it sometimes can become almost learning a new language. However, the goal for me was to make organic chemistry so easy to understand that it doesn’t look foreign at all. I wanted them to be able to see a problem and exactly know what steps that need to be taken. This was a great experience because it taught me the art of explaining complex concepts in common terms. In addition to that, in college, I volunteered at an elementary school tutoring a 4th grade student and a kindergartner student, focusing on reading and writing. Working with a different aged group of children one on one was a total different experience. Teaching these kids and learning from their enthusiasm was a big life lesson. I realized how different it was tutoring a young child vs. an older one and how teaching needs to be adapted to meet those ways. For example, including a fun activity for elementary school students is important to keep them engaged in school. While on the other hand, high school and college students require more of a practical approach and have to work through practice to understand a concept.I’ve also volunteered at Computers4Kids, where I tutored a middle school student. We met every week to create different computer project. I was able to build a bond with my student and teach her how to use a computer properly.I believe these various tutoring experiences have developed in me qualities needed to become a great tutor. I hope to be able to share my knowledge and also spend time learning with my students. One reason I believe tutoring is beneficial is that not only does it help the student, but I also get a chance to refresh and learn these concepts one more time. For the next two months, I will be available for on-line and in person tutoring in the Richmond area for about 10 hours per week. I am flexible for the next two months and I would be willing to do more hours if needed. Preferably afternoons or evenings would be better, but some mornings could also work. After those two months, I will be available for 5-10 hours a week for online tutoring, which would work better in the evenings.

I am currently pursuing a degree in Human Biology on a pre-dental path at the University of Toronto. Starting in high school, I began teaching when I became a swim instructor during sophomore year and discovered that I love teaching students. I enjoy seeing my students improve and achieve new goals as I work with them. Moving away from the swimming environment, I started to tutor students for math and science. I quickly realized that I enjoyed teaching in this environment as well, particularly because I enjoy math and science and their relevance to my everyday life. This projected my teaching philosophy by giving students connections to their studies. I believe these connections are the best way to improve your attitude towards learning and understanding of any subject area.In my spare time, I enjoy swimming, playing basketball, and producing music.

After graduating in 2011 from the City College of New York, I worked as a consultant for Dr. Dewey who then recruited me from Brookhaven National Lab to the Feinstein institutes for Medical Research. That year, I entered the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, and joined the inaugural class as one of three PhD students of the new medical school. My dissertation project interrogated pre-clinical sex differences in the metabolic neural patterns associated with opioid pain management using18-fludeoxyglucose (18FDG) and micro positron emission tomography (MicroPET). I was able to show that distinct metabolic patterns of pain were sex-specific, and confirmed that an animal model could be useful in revealing distinct metabolic indicators of opioid withdrawal and improve the efficacy of therapeutic intervention. As a Research Scientist at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, I oversee operations of the MicroPET imaging facility as part of the Center for Neurosciences. I have recentl studies include studies of the extracellular cold-inducible RNA-binding protein, (CIRP-/-) and wild type (WT) mice, before and after exposure to binge-alcohol levels. By quantifying glucose metabolism with 18FDG and MicroPET, and using brain-mapping analysis of the imaging data, we can determine if CIRP plays a role in alcohol-induced cognitive impairment. I have served as mentor to many undergraduate and some high school students, and very much enjoy sharing my knowledge base with those that enjoy science.

Everyone is unique. People have all different types of backgrounds, passions, and goals. In students its these differences that excite me the most. I want to be able to get to know a student, so that I might learn about them, in order to help them learn. I am currently an undergraduate at Case Western Reserve University and I'm majoring in Mechanical Engineering. It should go without saying that because of this I love almost everything STEM related.

Hi, my name is Ben and I am a medical student in my final year of training at NYU. I grew up just outside of Pittsburgh, PA, graduated from Penn State University in 2009 with a bachelors degree in Biology, and have been living in Manhattan for the past four years. I currently live in the East Village, a neighborhood packed with coffee shops, bars, live music, and just a generally awesome Hispanic/artsy culture.Back in college, I served as a teaching assistant and tutor for a Microbiology honors course for Biology majors, as well as an Introductory Biology/Life Science course for students fulfilling their General Science credits. My time spent as a TA included lecture style teaching and overseeing laboratory sessions for a 20-30 student class, as well as small group and one-on-one tutoring sessions.Next year, I will begin my residency training in Internal Medicine and Neurology, and I am hoping to stay in New York and work at either Cornell, Mount Sinai, or my home institution of NYU.I am experienced and very capable in helping students out with high school or college-level Biology, Chemistry, Physics, various Math courses, as well as standardized tests such as the SAT or the MCAT. I can also help with essay writing/editing, and anything else involved in applying for a science-related career or further education.I look forward to the chance of working with you!
