Tonight, the student and I began our session reviewing what happened in her English class. She updated me on where she is with her research paper (she is gathering sources) and the mock trial they had in class. We then spent the rest of the session working on APWH. She updated me on how her timeline turned out (she thought it turned out well, but she hasn't gotten her grade back), and then we focused on the next chapter of material. This chapter focuses on the changes in Europe after the Dark Ages and what brought about the Renaissance. We discussed changes in demographics, new technologies, changes in banking, and the rise of guilds. We also talked about the Bubonic Plague and the effects it had on society, culture, and the church. Lastly, we discussed the circumstances throughout Europe that allowed the Renaissance to take place. As we reviewed the material, she completed her study guide for the chapter.

In today's session we continued our preparations for the upcoming test on Chapter 8 by examining the chapter and study questions in detail. We began to go through the chapter section by section, where I explained important concepts and provided highlights on vital topics, with the student asking questions and sharing his answers for the provided study questions. Together, we covered such issues as the New Deal Coalition, the current trend of divided government, the shift in the South from Democratic to Republican majority support, and Andrew Jackson's crucial mobilization of the masses in the Presidential Election of 1828. We analyzed these and several other issues in great detail, where I paid special attention to providing definitions of vital terms and showing the student which details are most crucial for full understanding. We agreed to meet tomorrow to continue our intensive study of this chapter.

We covered more about the Protestant Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment. The student is getting much better at remembering the concepts we cover, which I think is because he goes over them first in class, then in reading my notes, and once more when we cover them and complete practice tests. The main strategy/skill we've been focusing on has been how to answer multiple choice questions most effectively. His extra practice is mainly to just keep consistently reading over notes, which he seems to be doing more and more of. We seem to have a good system established now, and it's one I think he will be able to do on his own in time. I consider this a win.

During the student's lesson, we covered the Scytho-Parthian artistic influences on Gandharan Art in Pakistan using the Bimaran casket as an example of how repousse gold smithing was transferred from Iran/ Eastern Europe to Pakistan. We talked about the French Revolution. The student came in knowing some of the general events but lacking an overall framework and "story" for the Revolution. So, we discussed the background to the Revolution and then the general timeline of events and significant people, portraying the Revolution as a radical and chaotic time period that ultimately ended in the rise of the Emperor Napoleon. I encouraged him to make a chart of the different constitutions of France during the time period, to guide him as he hopefully starts to put the events of the Revolution in the context of which government they occurred under. Next session, we will look at more specific events and run through some practice questions on the French Revolution online.
