Cantonese Tutoring FAQ
Cantonese is a dialect of Chinese spoken in Hong Kong and internationally, and is notable for its relative popularity in the United States. If you've made it your goal to learn Cantonese, whether in preparation for a trip, for business purposes, or to fulfill an academic language requirement, it is important that you be particular about the way in which you go about learning this language. Classes that simply teach you Chinese may very well teach you Mandarin, the dialect of Chinese that is spoken by the greatest number of people. While Mandarin and Cantonese both are represented using Chinese characters, a great number of differences between the dialects make them extremely distinct, to the point where speakers of each are unintelligible to one another. Your Cantonese tutor can assist you in speaking and writing this dialect most fluently.
The way in which a Mandarin speaker and a Cantonese speaker pronounce a certain character can differ widely, and Cantonese involves unique grammatical rules and sentence structures in comparison to Mandarin. Cantonese also includes characters not used in Mandarin, and to make matters more confusing, certain characters can mean one thing in Mandarin and a completely different thing in Cantonese! Obviously, if you want to learn Cantonese, you need to find instruction and resources that deal with this dialect specifically. In the long run, you will be able to effectively communicate and possibly find opportunities you never thought possible - from detailed conversations with Chinese friends to furthering your studies in this area, or landing a job that requires such abilities. A future trip to China can end up being productive and interesting, being that you'll be able to communicate on an impressive level with the locals.
What's an eager student to do, however, if the only Chinese instruction offered to them deals solely with the Mandarin dialect? Varsity Tutors can help you hurdle this obstacle by helping you connect with personalized Cantonese tutoring. One-on-one Cantonese tutoring can help you learn the language efficiently, while helping you build the skills needed to reach your specific goals. Our educational directors can help you select a superb, independent tutor whose skill set best equips them to help you, taking into consideration your current understanding of Cantonese and your previous education in the language. They look at the aspects of Cantonese you understand well, the aspects of the language you find confusing, and even your preferred learning style. Your tutor can identify any gaps in your current level of Cantonese knowledge and then create a curriculum for your Cantonese tutoring sessions focused on helping you master the material you most need to learn or review.
Additionally, because each Cantonese tutoring session is conducted in a one-on-one setting, you can have your instructor's full attention. That means if you have a question about the material, you can have it answered immediately in a way that makes sense to you. You can also receive feedback on your work as soon as you finish an exercise, or practice your conversational skills with an excellent speaking partner. The tutor's level of detail will certainly challenge you, but in a way that makes sure you know how you are progressing. This will leave little guesswork once you are fluent and able to communicate with someone whose first language is Cantonese. The Varsity Tutors live learning platform allows you to meet with a private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This gives you the flexibility to meet with your tutor at the time and location of your choice.
Don't let a lack of Cantonese resources slow you down in your efforts to learn the language! Varsity Tutors can help you connect with individual Cantonese tutoring that can bring efficacy and expert guidance to your studies. Contact our educational directors in your area today to learn more or to begin scheduling your first session!

Recent Cantonese Tutoring Session Notes
I went over her practice test that she had taken earlier that day in preparation for her chemistry exam on 4.26. The test reviewed many topics from this semester as well as new material on the crystal field theory and splitting energy.
Today the student had to take a practice midterm exam of the first six sessions since we started working together. As far as the material goes, she seemed to be pretty comfortable with it. There are still some things she needs to work on, but we had already gone over those together. We also reviewed the second half of material since we picked up our sessions again. Since those are more recent, she didn't have many questions with the concepts.
To start I gave the student a quiz on the vocabulary from lesson 4, dialogue 1, which he did very well on. We briefly reviewed grammar, then spent most of the remaining time working on translations, mostly from English to Chinese.
Today, we talked about pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, and quantifiers in Chinese. We finished the core vocabulary for preparing the test, so next class we will start talking about the sentence structures.

Final 4 week review of:
-Personal introductions
-Basic greetings

Today, we practiced and performed the presentation that the student had prepared for her mother. She gave a presentation using photos of her family and explaining who each member was in Mandarin Chinese. We then sang and danced to a children's song in Mandarin. The rest of the class focused on pin-yin pronunciation practice.
