I received my BA in English, secondary education from Colorado State University. After substitute teaching, I decided to work at a theatre company in Cleveland to expand my writing skills. Among many other things, I wrote and edited curriculum for students grades 2 through 12 to align with our productions. I love thinking of creative, real-world applicable lessons no matter what the topic. Before starting graduate school at Georgetown, I worked as an assistant at a school for students with learning differences. Differentiation to help students where they are and get them to the next level is a foundational practice for me; I use some practices that have personally helped me as someone with dyslexia. I love random history (the history of salt, the reason we say the word OK, and everything in between) , true crime, everything British, and film/theatre. Most of all, I love to teach. I tutor reading, writing, history, geography, and ACT test prep.

I graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice/Forensic Science. I have been tutoring since 2006. My tutoring experience includes students from grade levels kindergarten through freshman college. The subjects I have tutored include reading comprehension, basic math and algebra, chemistry, and physics. I also have been hired as a study coach which involves teaching study skills, time management, and organization. My favorite subjects to tutor are the hard sciences-- chemistry and physics. My professor in college made chemistry extremely interesting, so I found the subject easy to learn. However, I am passionate about every student I take on, regardless of the subject. I consider it is my personal responsibility to make sure the students achieve their main goals. If necessary, I take the initiative to contact my student's teacher(s) in order to have a better understanding of their situation. Basically, my teaching style is to tailor my lesson plans according to the student's learning style (audio, visual, kinetic). For example, for children with special needs, I believe the best way to reach them is by staying flexible and allowing the student some leeway when he/she is experiencing a problem related to their disability. Some of my personal hobbies include reading, volunteering, riding horses, being outdoors, and spending time with family.

I am a current undergrad at Princeton University who plans to become a professor. Studying math or literature has always made me happy, and I want to help others find enjoyment in their learning too. After helping classmates of all levels in nearly every subject throughout my schooling, I had my first formal teaching/tutoring assignment as a high school senior when teachers asked me to help lead my school's SAT prep lessons. Later, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I paused my education and gained further teaching/tutoring experience, first in a religious setting, and later as a coach for my high school's math team. I love helping students develop their problem solving skills in math and their critical reading and writing skills in English, and I am also passionate about helping students prepare the best college application possible. But no matter the subject, I enjoy forming connections with my students so that learning is not something they dread. This should be fun!

AP Human Geography Tutor • +30 Subjects
I grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina and am passionate about environmental issues, public education, and urban planning & design. After taking nearly all the AP & IB social studies courses my high school had to offer, I headed to Chapel Hill where I majored in environmental studies and minored in city & regional planning. Since graduating from UNC I spent a year working in Bangkok, Thailand, followed by six months working in Cape Town, South Africa, and four months working in Auckland, New Zealand. After all this globe-trotting I spent a year as an AmeriCorps member with Habitat for Humanity in Durham, NC. I recently moved up to Washington, DC and am eager to work as a tutor at Varsity Tutors.I love working with AP/IB history & English students, SAT test prep students, and GRE verbal reasoning students. Additionally, I enjoy working through job/school/scholarship applications with people of all ages. Having successfully applied to multiple scholarships and fellowships and mentored younger friends over the years I am eager to share the lessons of my experience with other people looking to reach their full potential.I know what it's like to be struggling on a specific test or in a particular subject area because that was me in most math classes since middle school. Luckily, I was able to get solid math tutors throughout those years who taught me not only math skills, but also showed me how a good tutor can empower a student to solve problems on their own. I hope to not just support my students to succeed on tests and in class but empower them to thrive holistically.

In July of 2014, I was granted one of the Fulbright scholarships. The Fulbright scholarship was given to me to complete a PhD Degree in African American Studies at a university in the United States of America. This scholarship is one of the greatest achievements in my life. In Colombia, less than 3% of Afrocolombians have the possibility to enroll into college, and less than 1% of us can get a graduate certificate. In addition, this Fulbright scholarship is important because it is focused on people who are able to demonstrate an outstanding academic progress, which is linked to a significant grassroots community work and leadership. In June of 2013, I completed my BA degree in Secondary Education with a minor in English. I have been dedicated to community youth work, political formation for college students, research on social unmet needs and the promotion of Affirmative actions to bridge the differential access of young Afrocolombians to universities. I am an active member of the Collective of African Colombian University Students- CEUNA, an organizational space where we debate and propose new alternative models of education and university in which the contributions of African people will be visible in Colombia.

I love to help others learn! After completing my B.A. in Political Science (as well as a minor in Middle Eastern Studies) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I am currently halfway through earning my teaching license through UW-Stevens Point in Broad-field Social Science at the secondary education level. As such, I have a rich background in the content knowledge of history, political science, geography, and other fields that are often assessed in placement tests. My certification program has also given me the tools for effective instruction, as well as opportunities to work in real classrooms with students. Aside from this, I have taken my own initiative to teach several original lessons at my old high school. With this background and experience combined, I make a great tutor!By getting to know my clients' educational goals and interests, I provide instruction that is both comprehensive and engaging. The more a student interacts with content in ways that suit their personal learning style, the better they will recall the information in the future - especially come test time! This belief is a major component of my teaching philosophy, especially as it pertains to tutoring. The other part of my philosophy is that teaching should be a collaborative process. Instead of the instructor providing answers to the student, guided exploration should drive study. When learning or reviewing content, the tutor and student should work through the information together, as opposed to the tutor just verbally transferring knowledge.I enjoy several other hobbies aside from teaching, including producing music and theater, reading, writing, playing video games and watching movies! I currently work as a composer and audio engineer for Games+Learning Society, a non-profit studio that makes educational video games. I am also involved in several other video game projects with smaller studios. This work has opened my eyes to seemingly unconventional teaching tools that are on the rise - and can be very effective! I also have written a full-length comedy musical with my former college roommate, which we are looking to get professionally produced in the coming year. As a script writer, my voice and editing have flourished on the page due to my previous English writing experience.I do my best to make learning an engaging and personal process in which my students can meet their goals through guided instruction. I believe I have the background, skills, and experience to do just that!

I am a graduate from Montclair State University. I studied Elementary Education and graduated, Cum Laude, with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. After Graduation, while searching for a teaching job, I had the pleasure of working with preschoolers. After that I got recruited to work for the Paterson Public School district, where for two years I taught Science, Social Studies and Language Arts to 4th graders. My experience with testing involves NJASK and PARCC. I am also actively involved in my local community college- Passaic County Community College. I am a teacher at their Gear up/College bound program where I teach High School students from Passaic and Paterson Biology and Forensic Science. I enjoy helping students do the very best that they can and provide opportunities for students to grow and even surpass their very best! In my free time I enjoy soccer games at Red Bull arena, cooking, reading, hiking and traveling- my most recent adventure was to Peru. Lastly, about my personality- I am fun, relaxed, patient and kind, all things I believe necessary to be an excellent tutor besides intelligence, of course.
