Tutoring review by Johnathan in Shiloh, IL
The student and I are still working on the many practice tests she brought to me. Over the weekend, she worked on many problems and noted which problems she was struggling with. We went over as many problems as we could. The student was having the most trouble with graphs. So after going through all the problems, the student seemed to grasp the concepts a lot better. I left her with a guide to graphs that I created.

Today we looked at graphs of exponential and logarithmic functions as well as graphs of trigonometric problems. The student has a good grasp of horizontal and vertical asymptotes for graphs of logarithmic functions and rational functions with a function of x in the denominator. She is also pretty good at identifying and graphing the amplitude, vertical shift, phase shift and period in the trigonometric problems. Remember that the key values for x in cosine and sine functions are 0, pi/2,pi,3pi/2, and 2pi. For tangent functions, the good x-values to look at would be: -pi/2,-pi/4,0,pi/4,pi/2. We'll go over the unit circle next time. Thank you for a good session.

We covered SAS, HL, and ASA proofs. We also worked on different types of triangles and their relationships (scalene, obtuse, equilateral, etc.). She has a test this week on this material, and I am feeling confident she will do well as she seems to really understand this material.

Tutoring review by Christopher in Shiloh, IL
I worked with the student on definitions and classifying rational and irrational numbers, solving one-step equations and defining inequalities. The student is well past grade level in his mathematical understanding, however this can cause him to rush and miss steps to solving problems even when his conceptual understanding is sound. He also worked on reading comprehension with his independent reading book, pulling out vocabulary words to define them and summarizing his reading at the end.

I worked with the student on comprehension and reading strategies by reading a passage about the ship Amistad. We talked about context clues, reading for understanding, and inferring. We discussed the importance of reading the passage and digging deeper for meaning instead of expecting the information to be right in front of him. Then we worked on vocabulary for word problems and how to determine what operation he needs. We discussed underlining key points and rereading the question before beginning to work on the problem. We worked on a tutorial about self monitoring and practiced this skill on an activity on the website.

Tutoring review by Sarah in Shiloh, IL
This was my first session with the student. We worked on critical reading methodology-- finding the conclusion, premise/counter premise, background, intermediate conclusions, and the two question types that most address the abstract structure of the argument ("describe the role of" and "describe the argument" questions). For the last 40 minutes, we worked on a few quantitative problems, including a simple interest problem and some Venn diagram problems. For next session, the student has requested more work on Quant word problems and some more critical reasoning.
