Recent Tutoring Session Reviews

Tutoring review by Michael in Midlothian, VA
I asked the student the standard questions for our first session and came up with very informative answers. She likes science a lot, but does not like math. The student is very smart and must know "why" and "how", not just "what". She reviewed her current homework with me and we worked through multiple problems requiring that she solve for a variable to find the solution making the equation a true statement. There were also multiple word problems where she had to create the equation to solve for the unknown item. She handled all of these tasks very well. In addition, as I check her logical reasoning and asked her how she can prove whether she is correct or not, she had excellent reasoning and checks to her work. Finally, I spoke with her father about a strategy moving forward. I also spoke about a test prep strategy ensuring that problems are aligned to curricular goals, then going deep into problems, rather than simply running through long lists of problems to practice. I am passing a good sheet in PDF form of topics and example problems which covers the assessment's math section.

The student and I reviewed her study guide for her upcoming chemistry final. We covered topics that she had the most difficultly with. She completed nearly half of the review packet. I left her with the assignment to complete the packet before our next meeting to verify her understanding of the material and to go over additional topics.

During our session, the student and I completed a math assignment involving budgeting. She and I set a monthly budget (outlining monthly living expenses), determined the percentage that each living expense made up of her total monthly budget and then created a pie graph to graphically demonstrate how her monthly budget looks. She did very well in today's session. We will meet again in two weeks, as she is on spring break next week.

Tutoring review by Brendan in Midlothian, VA
The student and I started with test corrections on a recent test on elementary differential equations and inverse trig. We then moved on to homework on solids of revolution using the disk and washer methods. He had a little trouble at first picking out the limits of integration, but after a bit of discussion of the geometric intuition, he got better at selecting the proper limits of integration. He occasionally had trouble determining the boundary of the region of integration, though that was related to his trouble with the limits. By the end of the session, he had a solid grasp on the material.

The student and I dove head first into conic sections. He should now be able to graph conic sections quickly and accurately, and has a better understanding of their mathematical definitions.
