I'm a recent graduate of the University of Notre Dame. I am a high school history teacher who has also worked as a teaching assistant at one of the country's top 10 colleges. I've taught ACT/SAT prep for about 4 years to students at all ends of the academic spectrum: from those working with learning disabilities/accommodations & struggling with timing to those trying to achieve perfect scores. Although I always create individualized plans, I focus on teaching every student the most effective, step-by-step way to approach each question on each section of the test. Beyond test prep, I've taught/tutored just about every academic subject through the undergraduate level. Outside the classroom, I enjoy reading about history, going to church, coaching sports (track & tennis), and spending time with my family. I really enjoy getting to know each student I teach as we work toward our goals.

I am a certified ESL teacher as well as teaching History at the local community college. Being an ESL teacher gives me the opportunity to bridge language and cultures, which is something I am passionate about. History is the perfect subject to encourage students to think critically and independently. History, whether it is personal/family or state or national or world, provides an identity and moral understanding. I find it exciting when students move beyond parroting what I say or what the readings say to draw their conclusions and back up their statements with facts. By examining the past, students learn so much more about the present, as well as develop the abilities to use logic, problem-solve, assess evidence and conflicting interpretations, and understand past examples of change. These abilities transition into working life skills as well as develop responsible public behavior no matter if they are a national or community leader, an informed voter, or an observer.

I also completed two minors in Mathematics and Chemistry. While at IU, I worked for the Department of Mathematics and Department of Spanish. I also worked as a Peer Tutor for the IU Athletics Department, tutoring in several subjects including statistics, chemistry, physics, and Spanish. I graduated from college with a 4.0, and I entered medical school shortly thereafter. Since coming to medical school, I have excelled in all of my pre-clinical coursework, and I currently rank in the Top 20% of my class. I feel very comfortable and confident tutoring other students in a variety of subjects from math and science to Spanish. I have worked with kids of all ages from kindergarten to sophomores in college, each with their own set of unique strengths, and tutored a variety of subjects, including calculus, trigonometry, geometry, thermodynamics, chemistry, and physics. Like many of my previous students, I struggled to understand concepts that I was being taught and was a terrible test taker. However, I found ways to overcome my obstacles and develop an better intuition for what I was learning. I believe that it is only this intuition and understanding that helps overcome these obstacles. My least favorite thing to see people be discouraged, so with a little bit of guidance and reassurance, I want to show people that they are capable of anything they put their mind to.

I am a mentor because I wish for others to have the same opportunity for motivation and success as I had from my teachers in high school. My mentoring experience has been primarily in three different areas. First, I have had direct involvement mentoring middle school students in mathematics through my local dentist's office. From there, I quickly learned that no experience is quite as unique or as rewarding as seeing a child have that light bulb moment when they finally understand a difficult problem or concept. Additionally, the lesson does not stop with just academics either. I have found that, in developing relationships with these students, I got to better understand them as people and adjust my methods accordingly. My second experience mentoring comes directly from teaching English to children of all ages in Oudong, Cambodia. Due to my limited understanding of the local language and teaching multiple levels of English at once, I was compelled to be creative to ensure all of my students understood our lessons. I developed lesson plans around the curriculum that featured games, singing, and dancing, finding alternative methods of expressing meaning to be very important in learning difficult concepts. This has had important ramifications for my style of mentoring; creativity and being able to think of ideas in different matters are useful to everyone trying to learn something new. Lastly, I have had the opportunity to extend my understanding of others in my work as a Democracy Fellow. Part of the mission of my university's Democracy and Public Discourse Initiative is to teach constructive practices of engagement and communication on topics of community concern. Through such projects as our freshman mental health conversations and our forum on substance abuse in in the county, I have learned that the best work is done on the grounds of a common understanding amongst diverse viewpoints. Ultimately, I hope to extend my training and the basic philosophy of freedom of expression as a method of making my mentees feel welcome in conversing with me.

I am a student at Indiana University Bloomington working towards a Bachelor in Science in Biology and Neuroscience. During college, I have been a member of numerous campus organizations, such as Timmy Global Health through which I had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala and work with local healthcare providers. In Guatemala, we traveled to rural sites to set up clinics and teach the citizens of rural communities about proper nutrition habits and others ways to improve their health using the resources they have available. These experiences motivated me to seek a future in healthcare in which I will be attending the Indiana University School of Medicine in the Fall of 2021 in order to become a physician. Moreover, I am most passionate about tutoring in Biology and Algebra. I see great importance in education because it helped me make my dreams a reality. In my opinion, education is a great way to increase understanding of the world and to open up a world of opportunities in the future. My motto with education and tutoring is to focus on the small wins and to work education into one's life, rather than vice versa. In my free time, I enjoy painting/crafting, walking, and watching football.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from all three of Hammond's school districts with personalized 1-on-1 instruction. Whether your student attends a school in Hammond Community School Corporation, Lake Ridge Schools, or another local district, we match them with tutors who understand Indiana's academic standards and can support their specific coursework and goals.

Indiana has specific learning standards across math, English language arts, science, and social studies that students must master at each grade level. Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who are familiar with these state standards and can provide targeted instruction to help close gaps, strengthen foundational skills, and prepare for Indiana-specific assessments like ILEARN and end-of-course exams.

Like students across Indiana, Hammond students most frequently seek support in math (especially algebra and geometry), English language arts, and standardized test preparation. We also work with students on science and social studies, as well as AP and honors courses for students looking to strengthen their college applications.

Hammond's average student-teacher ratio is 17.5:1, which means individual students often don't get the focused attention they need during the school day. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction fills that gap by allowing tutors to adapt their teaching to your student's learning pace, address specific misconceptions, and provide immediate feedback—something that's difficult in larger classroom settings.

During the first session, your tutor will assess your student's current understanding, identify specific areas of strength and challenge, and learn about their learning style and goals. This personalized evaluation helps the tutor create a targeted plan for the following sessions, ensuring that every minute of instruction is focused on what your student actually needs.

Tutoring rates vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and your student's grade level and needs. We recommend contacting Varsity Tutors to discuss your specific situation—we can provide transparent pricing and help you understand what investment makes sense for your student's goals and timeline.

Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have subject expertise, teaching experience, and a track record of helping students succeed. Each tutor is vetted to ensure they can provide high-quality, personalized instruction aligned with Indiana standards and your student's specific academic needs.

Yes, personalized tutoring is designed to be flexible. Sessions can be scheduled around your student's classes, extracurriculars, and family commitments. Whether your student needs support during the school week, on weekends, or during school breaks, Varsity Tutors can help find a tutor and schedule that works for your family.
