I am a high school history teacher who has also worked as a teaching assistant at one of the country's top 10 colleges. I've taught ACT/SAT prep for about 4 years to students at all ends of the academic spectrum: from those working with learning disabilities/accommodations & struggling with timing to those trying to achieve perfect scores. Although I always create individualized plans, I focus on teaching every student the most effective, step-by-step way to approach each question on each section of the test. Beyond test prep, I've taught/tutored just about every academic subject through the undergraduate level. Outside the classroom, I enjoy reading about history, going to church, coaching sports (track & tennis), and spending time with my family. I am a certified ESL teacher as well as teaching History at the local community college. Being an ESL teacher gives me the opportunity to bridge language and cultures, which is something I am passionate about. History is the perfect subject to encourage students to think critically and independently. History, whether it is personal/family or state or national or world, provides an identity and moral understanding. I find it exciting when students move beyond parroting what I say or what the readings say to draw their conclusions and back up their statements with facts. By examining the past, students learn so much more about the present, as well as develop the abilities to use logic, problem-solve, assess evidence and conflicting interpretations, and understand past examples of change. These abilities transition into working life skills as well as develop responsible public behavior no matter if they are a national or community leader, an informed voter, or an observer.

I'm Alexandra but you can call me Ally; I am a freshmen engineering major at the University of Notre Dame so I'm a huge math and science nerd.

I enjoy helping students learn more about math. It is a great feeling to see the "light bulb" turn on. I have been a math teacher and tutor for over 10 years, which includes teaching secondary, collegiate, and graduate courses. I earned a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame. I also have an M.B.A. in quantitative business analysis from Indiana University and earned my secondary mathematics teaching license/certification at Indiana Wesleyan University.

I am currently a fourth year medical student in Indianapolis. I completed my undergraduate education at Indiana University Bloomington, where I majored in Biology and Spanish. I also completed two minors in Mathematics and Chemistry. While at IU, I worked for the Department of Mathematics and Department of Spanish. I also worked as a Peer Tutor for the IU Athletics Department, tutoring in several subjects including statistics, chemistry, physics, and Spanish. I'm a non-traditional teacher, probably because I was a non-traditional student. I have ADHD and always have, so I don't always approach education from a traditional perspective. I worked for the Florida Marlins and the Miami Heat before moving back to Michigan and opening a golf shop. When I had kids, I realized it was important to be that I be involved in education, in no small part because I wanted to make sure the school wasn't as awful for my kids as it was for me.

I am from Munster, IN, and I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience at Duke University. During my free time, I enjoy playing basketball, watching basketball, and reading about basketball. I am a junior at Purdue University studying Aerospace Engineering and am part of the Air Force ROTC program. I have 6 years of tutoring experience at places including Kumon, Mathnasium, and Purdue University. I have worked with kids of all ages from kindergarten to sophomores in college, each with their own set of unique strengths, and tutored a variety of subjects, including calculus, trigonometry, geometry, thermodynamics, chemistry, and physics. Like many of my previous students, I struggled to understand concepts that I was being taught and was a terrible test taker. However, I found ways to overcome my obstacles and develop an better intuition for what I was learning. I believe that it is only this intuition and understanding that helps overcome these obstacles. My least favorite thing to see people be discouraged, so with a little bit of guidance and reassurance, I want to show people that they are capable of anything they put their mind to.

I am able to teach math and writing; skills that I have honed during my undergraduate education, at Hamilton College (same guy as the musical).

I am a mentor because I wish for others to have the same opportunity for motivation and success as I had from my teachers in high school. My mentoring experience has been primarily in three different areas. First, I have had direct involvement mentoring middle school students in mathematics through my local dentist's office. From there, I quickly learned that no experience is quite as unique or as rewarding as seeing a child have that light bulb moment when they finally understand a difficult problem or concept. Additionally, the lesson does not stop with just academics either. I have found that, in developing relationships with these students, I got to better understand them as people and adjust my methods accordingly. My second experience mentoring comes directly from teaching English to children of all ages in Oudong, Cambodia. Due to my limited understanding of the local language and teaching multiple levels of English at once, I was compelled to be creative to ensure all of my students understood our lessons. I developed lesson plans around the curriculum that featured games, singing, and dancing, finding alternative methods of expressing meaning to be very important in learning difficult concepts. This has had important ramifications for my style of mentoring; creativity and being able to think of ideas in different matters are useful to everyone trying to learn something new. Lastly, I have had the opportunity to extend my understanding of others in my work as a Democracy Fellow. Part of the mission of my university's Democracy and Public Discourse Initiative is to teach constructive practices of engagement and communication on topics of community concern. Through such projects as our freshman mental health conversations and our forum on substance abuse in in the county, I have learned that the best work is done on the grounds of a common understanding amongst diverse viewpoints. Ultimately, I hope to extend my training and the basic philosophy of freedom of expression as a method of making my mentees feel welcome in conversing with me.

I am a bilingual first-year med student at the Indiana University School of Medicine and a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Pre-Health and am a certified Spanish-English medical interpreter. I'm currently a sophomore at Notre Dame. I'm a math major but am also fulfilling pre-med requirements, so I'm a good bet with things like math, chemistry, and physics. As my friends can attest, I'm also a great proofreader if you have any papers. If you happen to be learning Italian, I have intermediate proficiency in that as well.

I am an experienced higher education administrator. I have spent my career in positions related to legal education, and I love working with students. I have always loved math, and I would like to help students who are being challenged by math concepts. I'm a firm believer that math can be fun, or at least that the concepts can be conquered. I am a graduate student at the University of Indianapolis. Currently, I am going to school for my Masters in Education and my Indiana Teaching License in Social Studies for grades 6-12. I am a student at Indiana University Bloomington working towards a Bachelor in Science in Biology and Neuroscience. During college, I have been a member of numerous campus organizations, such as Timmy Global Health through which I had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala and work with local healthcare providers. In Guatemala, we traveled to rural sites to set up clinics and teach the citizens of rural communities about proper nutrition habits and others ways to improve their health using the resources they have available.
