I'm 6 parts biologist, 3 parts psychologist, 1 part artist, 4 parts programmer, 5 parts educator, 7 parts researcher, 2 parts neuroscientist, and 10 parts gamer. During my sophomore year of college, I realized how games and game research could help people. My academic background in biology, psychology, biomedical engineering, and educational technology have been productive stepping stones towards that future. I work a lot. I play a lot. I read a lot. And I do a lot.

The best lessons, books, and materials in the world won't get students excited about learning and willing to work hard if they're not motivated. Motivation, both intrinsic and extrinsic, is a key factor in the success of students at all stages of their education, and teachers can play a pivotal role in providing and encouraging that motivation in their students. Of course that's much easier said than done, as all students are motivated differently and it takes time and a lot of effort to learn to get a classroom full of kids enthusiastic about learning, working hard, and pushing themselves to excel.Even the most well-intentioned and educated teachers sometimes lack the skills to keep kids on track, so whether you're a new teacher or an experienced one, try using these methods to motivate your students and to encourage them to live up to their true potential.

I studied at Stony Brook University and the Art Institute of Philadelphia, where I received Masters of Social Work and Bachelors of Science degrees, respectively. I am also a licensed social worker in New York State.I tutor students in: Spanish, reading, writing (including college essays),psychology, social sciences, and public speaking. My favorite subjects to tutor are Spanish and reading. I am in love with the Spanish language and sharing my knowledge of it is an immense joy. Reading is also incredibly fun to teach, because it is exciting to see students make progress, buiild confidence, and start to see how big the world becomes as they advance to higher reading levels. My philosophy is simple: keep it fun, and help the student to become self-motivated. Once a student sees that learning can be joyful, rather than painful, they will look forward to honing their skills and tackling increasingly difficult areas of a given subject.I have previously taught: reading to five-year-olds, essay writing to college students, English and Spanish as second languages, and life-management skills in a variety of settings.

As an undergraduate, I was privileged to attend Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Knox's small class size and emphasis on senior faculty teaching introductory courses made a lasting impression on me. I learned to learn in a collegial atmosphere. As a graduate student (MS & PhD) at Ohio State University, I successfully taught for my entire graduate career. I was nominated several times for the Excellence in Teaching Award. Working with and being a student at a large state school helped round out for me the variety of educational experiences available to students. From both large and small schools, I have adapted those traits of those teachers who most positively influenced me. In my teaching over 20+ years, the following points of emphasis come to mind.1. All students are individuals. They deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. This is a shared responsibility.2. Love of the subject and knowledge of the subject I am teaching go a long way to imparting the true excitement of learning. I have mastered many fields and work to intersperse "real-world" examples into my teaching.3. A Russian author said, "You can teach anything to anyone if you truly understand it yourself." I believe that. I work hard to truly understand the subject and choose not to try to teach a subject in which I am not fluent.4. In my teaching approach, I try use the Socratic Method to show the student that he already knows the answer to his question. I do this by directed questioning, leading the student from beginning to middle to end in a logical progression. The result is a student who learns to have confidence in himself and in applying the information he has already mastered.5. I receive back from teaching students more than I put in. I am constantly overwhelmed and gratified by the feeling I get from seeing the expression on a student's face when he finally grasps a difficult concept.

I am a graduate of Metropolitan State university. I received my Bachelor of Arts Social Sciences with a focus in Anthropology. I also minored in Biology. After graduation I spent many years in informal education settings at museums, nature centers, and 50 hours helping in a kindergarten. I developed and presented programs and classes. I assisted teachers with reading and writing. Through experiences I was able to spark learning through play and interactive activities.I have two favorite subjects to tutor. The first subject that I love to tutor is Science. There is so much wonder in the world. I love helping students see the wonder through different perspectives. I love to motivate students to discover, explore, and ask questions. The second subject is reading. I love stepping into the world of imagination. I love traveling into different worlds and realms. I enjoy bringing different worlds and perspectives to the students.I love learning. I want to pass that love of learning to students through making the sessions with me fun, interactive, and tailored to the uniqueness of each student. I am also comfortable tutoring in elementary and middle school social studies, Elementary language Arts, and early elementary math. One of the things that I really appreciate is getting to know my student and their adults before tutoring begins, because you are working together to empower the student to learn and grow in knowledge. It is helpful to know exactly what the adults and the students want to achieve from the sessions. It helps you set small goals for the student, and set up a workable living changing plan that fits both the goals and the needs. I reach out to the families over the platform messaging system first. I let the adult or student pick the way they like to communicate. I will introduce myself and ask a few questions likes and dislikes (school and other). What topics? How much time would you like to spend? What do you want to accomplish-this week, by two weeks, in a month, and a few months? How can we help you achieve those those goals? I ask how they learn. The answers to these questions will help start formulating that plan. If I am talking to the adult I like to ask them how their child learns (visual, auditorily, or by hands on doing. That helps me make the sessions more relevant and motivating. I believe that in order for students to achieve their goals they must be motivated and invested in their learning. They must be supported in a way that is inspiring, encouraging and empowering, and by making the sessions relatable to them, and met them where they are at. Sometimes a student doesn't want to divide into the lesson part of the session right away. I will have a game, review, or just a few minutes for them to talk.I also like to send updates, worksheets, websites, and other helpful resources to the students if they and their adults are open to that.Another thing that I appreciate is the open communication and feedback. If an adult would like me to change a session (time, topic, or arrangement) I encourage the feedback. Again we are working together to help the student achieve knowledge, understanding, and life skills.
