I am firmly of the belief that learning a technical subject like chemistry, physics, or math is much like learning a foreign language: listening and reading is much easier than speaking and writing. It is all too easy to fall into the trap of believing that if you come to class and understand what the instructor is saying, you don't need to practice the material. Accordingly, I emphasize the need to practice "speaking" the language on a regular basis and to receive immediate feedback on one's learning. In my free time I enjoy woodworking and playing with Legos with my small children.

I am a graduate of Boston Latin School and MIT. I have loved math and science since I was a child, and I loved my time at MIT, earning a BS in Materials Science, a PhD in Materials Science, and doing post doctoral work there. After leaving that academic world, I was drawn to software engineering and started my own software consulting business, which I have run for many years. I found that tutoring my sons and daughters and other young people in math has been very rewarding and that my enthusiasm for math and science can be infectious. My approach to instruction is to determine quickly what issues prevent the student from understanding the material and to work in a supportive and guided manner to help the student achieve success. Nothing makes me happier than helping a student to gain confidence by mastering a topic they were having trouble with. I love music, mostly jazz and rock, a love I got from my parents. I read science fiction, and do Tai Chi, and am working towards becoming an instructor, which is another form of tutoring as I see it. I am an Eagle Scout, and for many years, I have mentored young men who are working on attaining that rank. I volunteer to help the seniors in my home town with electronic device problems in their homes. I believe that a good education is the foundation for success in life. I like to think I've motivated and encouraged many young minds to achieve success.

I'm a born and raised Austinite and recently earned my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University in May 2015. I mostly tutor high school/college math and science courses, as well as SAT/ACT and MCAT prep. My favorite classes to help students with are biology, physics, biochemistry and statistics! I took 14 AP classes in high school, and retook many of the math and sciences class in college. I think this helps with tutoring because I learned the material multiple times and from many great teachers, so if a student doesn't understand a concept at first, I can hopefully explain it in another way that I've learned.

I am a recent Master's Grad in Chemistry from Princeton University. My main teaching experience comes from lots of tutoring in high-school and working as a TA at Princeton this past year (my kids even won me a teaching award for their good reviews!). Before that I got my B.A. in Chemistry from Northwestern University. I'm originally from the Jersey Shore area and went to a special math and science high-school for Ocean County students (also I was Math League captain and have been 2x Ocean County Math League champ). My specialties are in Chemistry and standardized test Math prep. I make sure to have a good time with all of my students and like to joke around while making sure we stay on track. Feel free to reach out with any questions about me you may have. Have a nice day!

I am a graduate of Brigham Young University where I majored in International Relations and Russian and of Thunderbird School of Global Management where I earned an MBA in International Business. My college and graduate studies include coursework in Writing, Literature, Geography, History, Political Science, Russian, Music, Business, Math, Science, and Art. Because of my experience with many different disciplines, I am able to teach a wide variety of subjects and have experience working with students of all ages from middle school to middle aged. My greatest skill as a tutor is the ability to adapt challenging material to the viewpoint of my students. This allows me to build bridges of understanding that help more analytical people feel at home in creative disciplines or vice versa. If you are a gifted artist struggling with Math, or an aspiring scientist struggling with creative writing, I'm your man! I am also a very experienced writer and editor. In my free time I enjoy hiking, literature, ultimate Frisbee, international travel, soccer, baking, music, strategy games, and philosophical discussions. I have lived in Africa, Western Europe, and Russia and visited over a dozen countries. Please note that due to the many different subjects I have studied, the list of classes above is not complete. If you have tutoring needs for a very specific subject, I may well have taken a course in that area. Feel free to reach out with questions!

Frequently Asked Questions
Physical Science courses usually combine foundational physics and chemistry concepts, including matter and energy, forces and motion, waves and sound, heat and temperature, electricity and magnetism, atomic structure, and chemical reactions. The specific topics and their depth vary by grade level and curriculum standards. A tutor can help you understand which concepts are emphasized in your particular course and break down complex topics like balancing chemical equations or applying Newton's laws of motion.
Physical Science involves visualizing things we can't see directly—from atomic structures to invisible forces. Tutors use diagrams, demonstrations, analogies, and interactive explanations to make abstract ideas concrete. For example, they might use everyday objects to explain Newton's laws, draw molecular models to show how chemical bonds work, or use energy diagrams to clarify how energy transfers between systems. This visual and conceptual approach helps you move beyond memorization to genuine understanding.
Memorization might help you recall definitions, but understanding lets you apply concepts to new situations and explain the 'why' behind phenomena. For instance, you might memorize that "density equals mass divided by volume," but understanding means recognizing when to use that formula, what it tells you about different materials, and how density affects whether objects float. Personalized tutoring focuses on building conceptual understanding through explanation, practice, and connecting ideas to real-world examples—skills that matter far more on assessments and in future science courses.
These skills require both procedural knowledge (knowing the steps) and conceptual understanding (knowing why those steps work). Balancing equations can feel like guessing, and unit conversions involve abstract thinking about proportions. A tutor breaks these processes into manageable steps, shows you how to check your work, and helps you see the underlying logic. With practice and feedback, what feels confusing becomes systematic—you'll develop confidence and the ability to tackle similar problems independently.
Physical Science tutoring isn't just about content—it's about thinking like a scientist. Tutors help you practice the scientific method, make predictions, design simple experiments, and interpret data. They teach you to ask 'what if' questions, test assumptions, and troubleshoot when results don't match expectations. These critical thinking and problem-solving skills transfer beyond Physical Science to other subjects and real-world situations, making you a more analytical thinker overall.
The best Physical Science tutors have strong subject knowledge, patience with visual and conceptual explanations, and the ability to connect abstract ideas to real-world applications. They should ask you questions to understand your learning style, identify specific gaps, and tailor explanations accordingly. They're also good at breaking complex topics into smaller pieces and checking comprehension along the way. When you connect with a tutor through Varsity Tutors, you can discuss these qualities to find someone who's the right fit for your learning needs.
Absolutely. Many students understand concepts in theory but struggle to apply them in the lab or interpret experimental results. A tutor can help you prepare for lab activities by explaining the underlying science, walk you through data analysis, and help you connect observations back to the concepts you're learning. This bridge between theory and hands-on practice strengthens both your conceptual understanding and your ability to think scientifically when faced with real phenomena.
