Math and music have been my two passions for many years. I received two bachelor's degrees in Mathematics and Music from Indiana University, graduating with high distinction, before going on to complete a Masters degree in music at Yale. Through many years of combined tutoring and teaching music lessons, I have come to embrace the philosophy of finding the best way for every unique student to learn. I love the subjects I teach and it is my goal to help others love and understand them as well. I work as a professional classical musician (I play harp!) based in Central Florida but performing regularly around the country. I have found that there are deep and beautiful connections between music and mathematics. Among various hobbies, in my spare time I enjoy running, cooking and gardening.

I am a pre-medical student studying neuroscience at the University of Michigan. I have a lot of experience with tutoring elementary-aged children with various special needs, but my skills are not limited to this demographic. Hi, I'm Ava! I'm currently a senior at the University of Washington. I have worked with kids since I was old enough to work--when I was 15 years old, I began teaching figure skating (a sport I have over 10 years of competitive experience in) at my local ice rink to kids of all ages and abilities. I later began to tutor middle school students in English and Social Studies subjects as well as work at a local day camp during summers. Due to the Covid-19 crisis, I am home in Salt Lake City, but normally I would be working part-time as an Extended Care staff member at a school in the Seattle area. Although the capacities in which I've worked with kids differ vastly, my passion for helping them grow and reach their full potential has never wavered. I am looking forward to starting teaching in the fall with the Teach for America Idaho corps and would love to help students learn and grow through Varsity in the meantime!

I went on to attend the University of Michigan where I graduated Honors in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Applied Statistics. During which time, I lead informal tutor and study groups for my peers in difficult courses such as microbiology, organic chemistry, and biostatistics, to name a few. Since graduating, I have moved back to my hometown where I worked as Data Analyst for roughly 8 months before changing paths and shifting back to medicine where I work now as a Medical Assistant for a local dermatology practice. I plan to get my Master's in Physician Assistant Studies in the new few years.As I mentioned above, I have a passion for helping those excel, where they may not feel the most confident. While my areas of strength are in math and science, I, myself, have struggled in other areas and have had to ask for help. So, I understand first-hand that everyone's learning techniques are different and, if a student is not understanding a concept while being taught one way, there needs to be a shift in methods to try and convey the message differently. I have informally taught many students over the years, and each one of them learned differently. What helped things "click" in one student's mind, was not quite the same as another's. I'd like to continue helping students find what "clicks" for them and excel in their troublesome area!

I am a current freshman at Columbia University and a prospective physics and mathematics major. In high school, I was a founding member of Local Outreach Tutoring (LOT), a program dedicated to tutoring Bronx middle school students for the New York City Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT). I continued in the program and became the head math teacher, responsible for leading a class of over 25 students. I believe standardized testing unjustly favors those with the resources for extensive test prep. Thus, it was all the more rewarding to work with students who, otherwise, would not have had as much access to such services. I have also privately tutored high school students in physics, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Besides tutoring, I frequently write and perform stand-up comedy and am a staff writer for Columbia's satire paper.

Since, I have worked with a couple of architecture firms and am currently in the process of taking the architectural registration exams. I have been involved as a tutor since high school, working with middle and high schoolers in math from algebra to calculus, middle school band ensembles, writing skills and reading comprehension, as well as a variety of other subjects on a short-term basis. I was also able to teach in a more significant capacity through Breakthrough Central Texas' summer program in Austin. There, I received intensive training over three months, worked alongside aspiring teachers, and was able to develop as a teacher over a 12-week, full-day program. I worked primarily with 6th graders in math, reading, and writing, but also taught a drawing/comics class for 6th-12th graders. Our students came from areas that had shown a greater likelihood for their students to start, but not complete, their college-level education. Working with kids who were just starting their 11-year journey, students who were in college and with Breakthrough, and the staff who had been with those kids for years gave me a wonderful perspective on what education looks like for many across the country, and solidified the importance of a holistic education system. I hope to bridge this passion with my architectural background in the near future, but in this moment where our schools and teachers are under an even-greater strain, I hope to help relieve some of that by assisting students where I can. My areas of greatest expertise are anything related to architecture, maths through trigonometry, writing and reading comprehension, and music (trumpet for more-advanced musicians, all brass for beginner/intermediate musicians). With any subject, I believe the most effective way to make meaningful progress is by continually making connections to other areas of knowledge and interest. This approach broadens the ways a student understands a concept, allowing for analysis and questioning that is more authentic and effective for that student's understanding of a concept. This is an approach to learning that I picked up while working in Austin, and have used ever since, making learning situations more enjoyable in the moment and more likely to stick around after the immediate need for that knowledge.
