We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

We not only have the student caught up, but we have her ahead of schedule. We started in on conics. We went over some general properties of conics and how to recognize what type they were. We then went over parabolas. I am going over those problems again before submitting them.

We reviewed some trig topics from last time including the unit circle, right triangles, and special triangles. We then worked on trigonometric identities, simplifying trig expressions, and verifying identities. The student did fairly well with this, and I assigned him more trig identity problems in order to memorize identities and to gain more practice with the strategies.

We reviewed old work (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). The student is still slower with division than I would like, but when she is focused on the other work, she does much better than when we originally started working, so it was nice to check to see that she has maintained her progress. We then reviewed the 9 rules for exponents that she needs to know for her test and did some practice problems. She has some trouble identifying which rules to use and especially has trouble with negative exponents, but I think the review helped and I emphasized the importance of learning those 9 rules for her test at the end of the week. We will continue working on these rules when I meet with her again.

Tutoring review by Michelle in Federal Heights, CO
The student had completed his math homework, which is on histograms and bar graphs, following last week's study of leaf and step plots. This session was a review of many concepts the student has studied up until this point. We started with understanding ratios, setting them up, setting them in proportions and solving for the unknown with cross-multiply & divide (or the 'fish') approach. We reviewed mode, median, and mean. Also, how to find the mean with an unknown part. In the process of doing those problems, I reviewed adding with negative numbers, and the student did some multiplying of two-digit numbers & long division. We ended with some % problems like the ones he did in his last chapter. Next week will be preparation for the next chapter test.

We went over Geometry problems for her quiz packet. The Geometry problems involved finding areas of regular polygons. I gave her some tips on how to use her previous knowledge in order to help her find the area of these polygons. Overall, the session was excellent.

Tutoring review by Mark in Federal Heights, CO
The student brought his last homework assignment in math on which he only missed one question. His times tables are as strong as they were when we met last in February. We worked in the assessment workbook; the problems on fractions, primarily on determining lesser than or greater than, did not present a problem for him. I began to teach him how to add or subtract fractions, which he hasn't yet covered in class. On adding and subtracting time, he needs some practice. I reminded him to bring his book next time we meet. The student told me that she took the assessment in March, but has not seen results yet. Her teachers have told her that she will take it again this year. We worked primarily in an assessment practice test, focusing on fractions - adding, subtracting, finding common denominators, and answering word problems. She indicated that she has a new assessment booklet / practice test, which I asked her to bring next time. We also reviewed times tables and square numbers.
