My name is Shalin. I am a Biology geek, currently enrolled in NYU pursuing a Masters in Bioinformatics. I love all things science, and am building a career working in Big Data. I love working with kids of all ages, and evaluate each child to determine what resources work best.

I am a Duke alum currently working toward a Master of Science in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University. As a pre-med student who majored in African and African American Studies, I have experience navigating a variety of disciplines. I also have experience tutoring in a number of subject areas, and have worked with diverse sets of students who have varied in age, grade level, and coursework. I began tutoring almost seven years ago working with disadvantaged students on mathematics. Since then, I have constructed curriculum for a program for middle school girls, and spent a semester training in preparation to be writing tutor at Duke’s writing center which serves graduate and undergraduate students across disciplines. I have a love for learning, and an appreciation for the richness that a interdisciplinary education provides. Helping others better understand their course materials, and, in turn, themselves as life-long learners, is a truly enriching experience.

I have a recent MA in English and Creative Writing. I am also a CPA with an MBA in Accounting and an MS in Taxation.I have significant experience teaching and mentoring new accountants, having worked in management in the field for 25 years.My recent MA qualifies me to tutor students in both writing and literature. Since the program was online, I am skilled at teaching and communicating both in person and online.I work with both high school and college students, as well as adults who have returned to college to improve their lives and reach their goals.I believe that if one applies oneself with dedication and enthusiasm, and remains resilient in the face of challenges, the attainment of one's goals is certain.

I'm currently a second year medical student at New York Medical College. I spent the last 4 years doing synthetic biology research at NASA Ames Research Center out in California. I graduated from Stanford University with both a bachelors and masters degrees in biology.

I graduated from TCU with a BS in Psychology and a double major in Criminal Justice. I will attend law school next year to earn my JD and become a criminal prosecutor. I am passionate about social justice and I believe a great part of justice is education. Education is empowering and fulfilling and I am privileged enough to have experienced this. Now, I want to help others experience the life-changing power of education as well.

I am a Creative Writing (English) major at Macalester College with a passion for writing, books, and hockey. I also have a minor in Classical Languages (Latin) and plan to attend law school after graduation. I am a captain on Macalester's club hockey team and enjoy being involved in the team and in helping players who are new to the sport learn to love it as I do. I hope to apply that same passion to helping students achieve their academic goals.

I recently graduated from Skidmore College with a Bachelor of Science. There, I studied theater and took classes in literature, history, religion, neuroscience, and more. I assistant taught in college and often helped my friends with essay writing and studying. Since graduating, I’ve tutored my younger sister for many of her high school classes. I now tutor a wide range of subjects, including literature, history, writing, Spanish, and Algebra. I am particularly passionate about preparations for standardized testing, including the SATs and AP exams, and helping students through the college application process. My hope is that the support I provide to struggling students will empower them to expand their academic curiosity and appreciate learning. In the fall of 2016 I will be continuing on to a four year year Canadian university to study mathematics. Mathematics is my specialty and my passion but I enjoy conversing in Spanish and French immensely and have a deep appreciation for the intricate beauty of linguistics. Other less academic passions of mine include backpacking, rock climbing, music and general adventure and travel.I am devoted to designing quality lesson plans and using top notch resources. I love teaching and have been developing my skills in various environments throughout my educational career. One of the most important characteristics of my teaching style is my focus on clear communication. Communication is key in making clear what is understood, what is not, and what is confusing for any student, which I find to be particularly important in the case of students who do not enjoy math, who can often come up against mental blocks. Some other important aspects of my teaching style are my teacher engagement in the subject matter, connecting knowledge to the real world and exploring content from my student’s perspective.In mathematics, my background is primarily experiential and traditionally academic. In regard to languages I have had the fortune to learn them at least partially through immersion. My Spanish has been learned through my eighth grade year which I spent studying in Mexico at a local school and then grammar studying in an upper level college course and finally a semester in Spain. My French was learned primarily in school but I recently spent a month in Morocco where I was able to apply it in a more practical environment.
