...of their power to bring this about, including languages, mathematics, and (of course) philosophy. All of these areas stretch from an elementary to an advanced level, and I consider it of cardinal importance to equally value the successful communication both of elementary topics, such as algebra 1 or German word order, and complex ones, such as deontological critiques of utilitarian ethics. By valuing all levels of difficulty, I am able to give students a firm...

German 1 Tutoring FAQ
A first language course can be deceptively simple. As you begin to learn conversational German, it can seem as if you are merely being taught an assortment of basic vocabulary words, short phrases, and sentences. Certainly, German 1 is a far distance from the rigors of AP German, but this should not trick you into thinking that tutoring help will be superfluous for your early studies. Instead of waiting for problems to arise in later classes, provide for mastery in your German 1 class.
Contact Varsity Tutors today for help connecting with a tutor who can provide German 1 tutoring options to lay a foundation that you can rely on throughout all of your future German studies. Unlike learning the Romance languages such as French or Spanish, learning German can be quite a different and difficult affair for students whose native language is English. Although English does have a relationship to modern German, there are many aspects of German vocabulary and grammar that are not directly mirrored in English. At first this difference can seem minimal. Hence, it is tempting to ignore minor difficulties, which perhaps do not have negative effects on your grade, or at least not significant ones.
However, like all language learning, German is a cumulative affair, and a small error in the beginning of your studies can become a larger issue in more advanced classes. Personal German 1 tutoring can help you develop a rigorous program of language study from the very beginning, helping to prevent any untimely errors or frustrations in the coming years of study. Given the more complex vocabulary and grammar of German, not to mention the three genders it espouses, it is helpful to have an active partner for using the language. Instead of working through grammar by repetitive, rote monologues, you can best learn the language by having an active interlocutor who can help probe your capabilities, forcing you to use the new vocabulary, phrases, and basic grammar in an active manner that greatly facilitates mastery and memorization. Few subjects benefit from personal attention like language learning, and German 1 tutoring can help you reap the benefits of personalized one-on-one attention today, setting the foundation for continued language success in the coming years of study with their significantly increased difficulties.
German can be a very difficult language to learn. A private tutor can also be helpful by acting as a friend and mentor. They can help guide you through areas where you are struggling and help to encourage you when you feel like giving up. A private tutor is also beneficial in the sense that they allow you to work at your own pace. It is unlikely that your German teacher will slow down or speed up the pace at which they present material to accommodate individual students. Thus, if you get lost with a particular topic, it may seem impossible for you to ever catch up.

Recent German 1 Tutoring Session Notes
Today's focus was Mandarin grammar points to prepare the student for his Chinese final. We went through grammar points that covered time, being at a location or a repeated action, as well as location direction (front, back, NSEW, etc.) He seemed comfortable studying for his other final on his own. I directed him to go over the vocabulary himself since we only had time for sentence practices.
We hadn't met in a while, so we spent the session reviewing what we covered previously, especially lesson seven. The student did fairly well. We did dictation and tried to converse in Mandarin, and I assigned him homework from his workbook. We also discussed how best to proceed.
The student did great today. He had completed most of his homework in school, so after we reviewed it he studied for his dictation test. He had some trouble with the two new words but was attentive and eager to participate in tutoring. He cooperated for writing sentences and even requested to write his own sentences. I was very impressed with his initiative. I left him with two short sentences that he helped write that he can copy as practice during the week.
In this class, we practiced the Chinese test, including listening comprehension and reading comprehension. Before practicing, we went over 80 vocabulary words. I asked the student to memorize the words and we will have a little test next class.
We went over her homework which was writing the new characters in her lesson. We put together a memory game for these characters and played the game until she could remember her new words. We watched a video of a Chinese kid's song talking about spring and the seasons.
Today we went over all colors we learned from the student's last two classes, and also we learned 4 more colors in Chinese. I brought a bunch of my family's pets' photos to show him for helping him to master the new sentence structures, like "This is a small cat" "This is a big dinosaur",etc.. We had conversations with these new sentences together. His pronunciation was surprisingly perfect! He had trouble on the word "white" and "gold". We will practice more at next class!
