4th Grade Tutoring FAQ
Fourth grade is an exciting time in a student's academic career. Having gained foundational knowledge in a variety of subjects during previous years' coursework, students are now being shown how to apply that knowledge in new and fascinating ways. They are also able to add to their understanding of fields as varied as history, geography, math, biology, grammar, writing, spelling, and music. While every student is likely to find one or more topics that he or she takes to with ease and enthusiasm, each student may also encounter some subjects that are particularly difficult.
As the breadth of material expands from previous years in preparation for the subject-specific classes of middle school and beyond, so too does the difficulty and complexity of coursework. It is important for your student to master the variety of content he or she is introduced to in fourth grade in order to set the foundation for success in later classes. Varsity Tutors can help you and your child connect with fourth-grade tutors all across the country who can help your child bolster his or her skills and knowledge.
When you contact one of our educational directors, they will take note of your child's personal academic patterns and learning habits, such as his or her strengths, weaknesses, academic aspirations, and interests. Using such criteria allows us to catalyze the learning process by helping you select a tutor who can cater to your child's specific learning style and fields of interest. It can be somewhat difficult to fully determine your child's strengths, weaknesses, and learning style on your own. This is where a private tutor can be very helpful because they have the requisite skill and experience to find exactly where your child needs to improve and the best ways to help them.
Tutoring occurs in a one-on-one setting, allowing the instructor to give your child individualized attention. You can even collaborate with your child's tutor to develop his or her customized lesson plans. By presenting material in ways that are intuitive to the student, tutors can make fourth-grade studies both engaging and efficient. This represents a major advantage over learning in the classroom because your child's teacher likely doesn't have the time to give students individual attention. If your child is one of only a few students who are struggling with a subject, they may get left behind because their teacher won't be able to spend more time on it. With a private tutor, your child can spend as much time on a subject as they need to master it. Likewise, if your child is way ahead of their class, they may start to get bored. A private tutor can work with your child to make sure that they stay engaged.
Whether your child's classroom nemesis is the curled fluidity of cursive handwriting or the dreaded complexity of long division, an educational professional may be able to help. Each tutor is committed to your child's academic success, and to making your tutoring experience as positive and convenient as possible.
Varsity Tutors' live learning platform enables you and your child to meet with a private tutor face-to-face online. This allows the flexibility of meeting with a tutor at a time and location that works best for you and your child. Your tutor will work to accommodate your busy schedule and is available in the evenings and on weekends to hold sessions. He or she also adapts to your locational preferences, meeting you in-person at your home, at a local classroom or library, or online. Tutoring has never been more accessible. For more information, contact Varsity Tutors today and let us help you and your child connect with a private tutor.

Recent 4th Grade Tutoring Session Notes
We covered new vocabulary in the text, including definitions and using them in sentences. The student is getting better at scanning for context clues. The student went home with extra practice, just as last time. He came prepared with the work complete as well. For next week, we will focus more on the difference between revising and editing a writing piece.
Math - We continued working on fractions. We reviewed the assignment that was given at the end of our last session and moved on to factors, multiples, composite numbers, odd/even numbers and divisibility rules.
There was a practice assignment provided as an assignment.
English - We reviewed his 2nd draft of his first essay and began practicing on a second essay. We discussed ways to improve his writing and practiced those ideas discussed in another essay.
Today was my first session working with the student. She seems very easy to work with and fun. I gave her a few math problems to see where she was, as well as a short writing assignment to see where her writing skill was. We will be able to start working on the requested subjects during our next session.
Today we worked on a grammar correction paragraph, reading comprehension piece, finding the area of a rectangle, and began work on solar system project. The student received high marks on his reading and math. He struggled with remembering to slow down and show his work, but got better with some reminders. Practiced note taking skills from watching a video on the solar system.
Today the student and I reviewed her practice work. The student had to provide me with a summary of the chapters that she had read from her book, "Spy Camp." She had to provide me with the characters, setting and the problem, if she had gotten to that part. She did an excellent job explaining the story to me. She actually told the story in a way that I would actually want to the read the book myself. Excellent job summarizing and retelling. The student and I worked through the additional Math Assessment. We reviewed some math vocabulary and discussed multiplication strategies. The student had to complete # 31-35 for practice. We will review those questions during our next session.
Student and I read a nonfiction book about sports. The student was able to make great predictions about the story and add some previous knowledge regarding the main character. After discussing various new vocabulary like slugger, strike (multiple meaning word), ballpark/stadium (compare & contrast skill) the student expressed his love for the sport.
Math - We reviewed multiplication tables. He was able to get 39/40 right.
