I am originally from Lawrenceville, Georgia and graduated from Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology in 2016. With a full ride scholarship, I am currently a sophomore at Rice University in Houston, Texas. I am studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Cognitive Science while also pursuing the pre-medical track. Since beginning college, I have been given the opportunity to tutor a variety of students. I began volunteering in my freshman year with the Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees in which I tutor refugee high school students with their coursework assessments, and English skills. I have also volunteered with the International Rescue Committee to tutor refugee adults in improving their English. In addition, I have worked with the Rice University Athletic Department to tutor athletic students in areas such as chemistry and mathematics. While I can tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Algebra, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, and Psychology. Because I believe the education is an important tool to empower students to reach their future goals, I hope to help students reach their academic potential by tailoring my tutoring sessions to them. Besides school work and tutoring, I enjoy running, reading, and Netflix shows such as Parks and Rec.

I'm currently attending Rice University- pursuing a double major Bachelor of Arts in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Economics. As you can probably tell I'm very passionate about math, and I'm even more passionate about teaching it! I prefer to teach math a little differently than some of you may used to. Many of students think of math as a plug and chug approach- simply being given formulas and plugging numbers in. While I will give you the formulas and critical things to remember if you insist on it, I prefer to teach mathematics as a form of problem solving. How math works is a beautiful thought process- understanding how a formula was conceived is much more rewarding than simply memorizing it. But in the end it's all up to you- the student. If you want a fast run-down of everything you need to know to ace the test- I'll happily help you. However, if you're willing to think outside of the box and learn some very neat stuff, I'll open the doors to mathematical problem solving for you!

I'm a rising junior studying Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Rice University. I first started formally tutoring at the beginning my senior year of high school to fill up some of my free time after school. I've always enjoyed tutoring because I frequently helped my friends in my classes and really enjoyed seeing how I could impact my friends in their own success. I definitely made the right choice my senior year with tutoring because I met some remarkable families and got the opportunity to really help students in more of a long-term scope and see the difference in their grades. I'm a big advocate for the philosophy that "practice makes perfect" and I absolutely love my students that are ready to put in work. Hobbies: art, sports, books, writing, reading, music

I am originally from Forest Hills, NY. While I tutor a variety of subjects, English and French are easily my favorites. I love writing, reading, editing papers, and anything French, and it shows in my work. I've worked with students from eighth grade to college students. My students have had a range of abilities, from those struggling to pass to those attending top-level schools. Most students come to me for English and French assistance, but I've also worked with standardized test preparation, math, and time management. In my free time, I like to take long rambling walks and explore everything Houston has to offer, from new restaurants to coffee shops to art galleries and museums. I also enjoy knitting, playing with my cat, listening to all kinds of music, and curling up with a good book. Hobbies: reading, writing, books, music, running, art

I am a current student at Rice University studying Mathematics and Computer Science. I have lots of tutoring experience, having tutored kids at my high school and at-risk youth. I know how intimidating asking for help can be, which is why I make a point of being patient and respectful with all of my students. I think it's important for students to understand that getting tutoring can be a stress-free and beneficial decision. I have always loved math, and I am able to tutor in pre-algebra, algebra, AP Calculus AB and BC, multivariable calculus, and high school physics. Outside of academics, I enjoy playing the guitar and rock climbing.

Hello! My name is Connor, and I am a Bioengineering student at Rice University with a strong background in physics, mathematics, chemistry, and standardized test preparation. I scored a 1550 on the SAT and earned a 7 in IB Higher Level Physics. I enjoy helping students build a deep understanding of concepts rather than simply memorizing formulas. My goal is to make challenging topics approachable, improve problem-solving skills, and help students gain confidence in their academic abilities. Whether you're preparing for an exam, improving class performance, or tackling difficult homework assignments, I will tailor lessons to your specific goals and learning style.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors throughout Houston and the surrounding areas, serving families across all 45 school districts in the region. Whether your student attends school in HISD, Katy ISD, Cy-Fair ISD, or any other local district, we can match them with a tutor who understands the specific curriculum and academic standards they're working with.
Houston students frequently seek tutoring in math, science, and English—subjects that are critical for meeting Texas state standards and preparing for standardized tests like the STAAR exam. We also work with many students on test preparation for the SAT and ACT, as well as AP courses, which are increasingly popular in Houston's competitive academic environment.
Personalized 1-on-1 instruction is highly effective for STAAR preparation because tutors can focus on the specific areas where your student struggles—whether that's reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning, or writing skills. With Houston's diverse student population and varying academic needs across our 945 schools, tutors tailor their approach to match your student's learning style and fill gaps in understanding before test day.
In the first session, the tutor will assess your student's current level, discuss academic goals, and identify areas needing the most support. This might involve reviewing recent test scores, classwork, or specific topics causing difficulty. The tutor uses this information to create a personalized plan tailored to your student's needs and your family's objectives.
Houston's average student-teacher ratio is 16.3:1, which means classroom teachers often juggle the needs of many students at different levels. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to focus entirely on your student, adjusting pace and teaching methods to match their learning style. This targeted approach is especially valuable for students who need to catch up, move ahead, or master challenging concepts before they fall further behind in class.
Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and your student's specific needs. We work with families to find tutoring options that fit their budget. Contact us for a personalized quote, and we can discuss flexible arrangements that work for your family's situation.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have strong backgrounds in their subject areas and experience working with students in Texas schools. Many tutors are familiar with Houston's curriculum standards and the specific challenges students face on state assessments. Each tutor is vetted to ensure they can provide high-quality, personalized instruction.
Yes, tutoring can be scheduled flexibly to fit your student's needs—whether that's after school, on weekends, or during the summer. Varsity Tutors works with families to find times that work best, making it easier to add academic support without disrupting your student's other commitments and activities.
