I received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Linguistics and Spanish from the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. I studied three languages - Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese, - and am fluent in Spanish. More recently, I returned to school to work on a graduate degree in Elementary Education and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon, which is still in progress. As an undergraduate, I tutored English to college students from Asia and the Middle East. For the last several years I have continued to privately tutor adults, primarily in English as a Second Language (ESL), but I have also taught Spanish literacy to native Spanish-speakers. I taught ESL to immigrant adults for six months at a local community college, and spent a year teaching Spanish-speaking adults at a private language school in Vancouver, Washington, where classes were conducted in Spanish. Most recently I worked for a company that provided tutoring to public school elementary children in reading, phonics and math. I taught children from kindergarten through grade 8.I'm so excited to be working for Varsity Tutors because it allows me to put so many of my interests and skills together into one job working with children and adults, teaching languages and math, and relating to cultures and life stories other than my own. I believe that everyone can learn, no matter their age, background, or learning disabilities. I try to approach each student as an individual and adjust learning tasks to fit a student's learning style. My goal is to present learning material in a logical and orderly fashion and to explain concepts in a way that can be easily understood. Students should have concrete examples and practice using the concepts in relevant contexts in order to make learning memorable and permanent. I am dedicated to building my students' confidence and success. Some of my personal interests and hobbies include gardening, hiking, international cooking, and making craft projects with paper and rubbers stamps. I also enjoy identifying and protecting native plants and animals in my region of the U.S., learning and supporting ways of protecting the environment, and developing sustainable business and home-life practices. When I can find appropriate ways to incorporate these interests into my lessons, I try to do so in order to make lessons more interesting and educational for my students.

I'm an elementary school teacher at a classical school outside of Boston. I graduated from Yale last year with a B.S. in psychology. As a student I worked as an undergraduate research assistant in a cognitive neuroscience lab, studied in Paris, debated with the Yale Political Union, and took part in numerous off-campus mentoring and counseling activities. In many ways I am still a student, always trying to grow as a person and in my profession. My favorite subject to teach is math, because there are often many different ways to approach any one problem - the fun is in finding out what works for you!

I received my Bachelor of Arts in Education, as well as my Masters of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governors University. I began my career teaching special needs preschool. I really found my passion for teaching when I moved to Elementary Education. I enjoy seeing that "light bulb" moments happen for my students. I currently tutor K-5 in all subject areas with a focus on test preparation for the STAAR test in Texas. I believe that all children can learn at their own pace and style. I tutor in the same way. I like to get to know my students and their styles, so they get the most out of our sessions. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, crafting and traveling.

I'm a current undergraduate at Rice University in Houston, TX, originally from Brooklyn, New York, currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in philosophy and Spanish. My engagement with middle school students began in the summer of 2019, when I took on the role of a 7th grade writing teacher for Houston-based students. Ever since that initial experience, I have made the continuous effort to continue developing a teaching pedagogy centered around challenging students in their writing while helping them strengthen their assets. I usually maintain a small cohort of 6th to 8th graders as this allows me to really get to know them and provide individualized support based on their academic needs. In addition to providing help with English, I can also tutor students learning Spanish and assist those applying to college.

I am a graduate of Laguna College of Art and Design (formerly Art Institute of Southern California). I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and Illustration in 1996. The early 90's was the wild west of desktop publishing, and we as students were literally discovering the power of applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, side-by-side, with our instructors. Each day, we were learning from them. And they were learning from us. This is a philosophy I have always applied in my career... you are never too seasoned, or too experienced, to learn something new. After graduation, I accepted an opportunity with my employer to join a team in our Central California HQ, working to design and test the UI for a replacement Point-of-Sale system. This allowed me to eventually segue into a permanent role traveling across the country, supporting the hardware and software roll-out, and training our associates on the new system. This is when I developed my passion for travel. In 1999, I "went online" for the first time, and discovered that the same design applications I'd studied in art school were now the graphic building blocks of the Internet. I was immediately hooked. Within a couple of weeks, I was building my first website, "Next Stop, Aptos Station!", showcasing my love of railroading history.Over the next couple of years, I honed my skills in HTML and JavaScript. Those two programming languages, and eventually CSS, would serve me for the next 10 years of my career as a Web Designer and Developer. And eventually opened the door to more than a decade as a Salesforce.com Administrator. In 2018, I was able to shift gears and start traveling the U.S. with my wife and dog, in our camper van. I continue to work as a Salesforce Administrator, as a remote worker, from where ever we happen to be this month. I continue to enjoy my two aquatic passions, surfing and bodysurfing, and also manage to hit a few skateboard parks along the way.Through hard work, and smart choices, I have been blessed with a range of career opportunities, and life experiences, and I hope to impart this to my students.

I received my Bachelor of Science in Software Development and I'm currently working on my Masters degree in Computer science from Georgia Tech. Since graduation, I have been tutoring students looking to improve their programming skills and gain a couple of IT-related certifications. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about computer science, programming(Java, Python, C#/ASP.NET, (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript), and various CompTIA certifications which I also currently hold (A+, Network+, and Security+).In my experience helping struggling students prepare for certifications or sharpen their coding skills, we always seem to have the most fun (with remarkable advancements) prepping for the Performance-based questions and understanding the key concepts of programming depending on the scenario. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. I'm passionate about nurturing lifelong learning among my students, and I hope to encourage students to think creatively and explore their natural curiosity. In my spare time, I enjoy working on cool side projects, music and dance that enrich my life, yoga, and working out.

Since I graduated from Wuhan Medical University, I have gained over a decade of experience in teaching Mandarin Chinese to English-speaking students. I have experience working with students from elementary school age to high school age, whether they don't yet know pinyin (the Chinese alphabet) or need help preparing for an exam to receive foreign language credits. As a teacher, I believe that individualized attention and custom curriculums can make a big difference, which is why I develop all of my teaching material myself. I tailor my classes to each student's personal goals, whether that means focusing on conversational basics or spending more time writing compositions. In my spare time, I'm a photographer, a gardener, and a swimmer.

I'm a 4th year college student at Stony Brook University working towards a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and a minor in writing and rhetoric. I love helping other students enjoy what they are learning by providing support as a tutor! Students who struggle in their academics often just need a role model who can focus on their individual learning style and encourage them to utilize it -- which is who I try to be each day. My goal for my students is for them to see past the challenges and enjoy the process of learning. I have over 2 years' experience tutoring kids in grades K-12 in math, science, English, and test prep, as well as helping fellow college students in biology, math, and chemistry. Examples of my expertise include teaching a class at an SAT prep center, private tutoring for K-12 both in-person and online, serving as head teaching assistant for college-level biology, and working as a chemistry peer tutor for other students at my university. I use a wide range of virtual games, arts and crafts, physical activity, virtual simulations, and real-world problems to make tutoring sessions engaging and appropriate to age level. As someone who wants to pursue research and teaching as a career, I believe quality, accessible education can have a huge positive impact on people's wellbeing and development.

Frequently Asked Questions
Debugging is one of the most frustrating parts of learning to code, but with personalized 1-on-1 instruction, tutors can walk your student through error messages step-by-step and teach them how to think like a problem-solver. Instead of just telling them the answer, tutors help students understand what went wrong, why it happened, and how to prevent similar errors in the future. This builds real debugging skills that transfer across programming languages and projects.
Syntax is the specific rules of a programming language (like how to write a loop correctly), while logic is understanding the problem-solving approach behind the code. Many 7th graders struggle when they focus too much on syntax details and miss the bigger picture of how their program should work. Personalized tutoring helps students grasp the logic first—understanding variables, loops, conditionals, and functions as problem-solving tools—so syntax becomes much easier to learn and remember.
Building actual projects—like games, apps, or interactive websites—gives students concrete goals and meaningful practice. Instead of just working through abstract exercises, project-based learning lets 7th graders see their code do something cool, which builds motivation and deeper understanding. Tutors can guide students through project planning, code reviews, and troubleshooting to ensure they're learning best practices while creating something they're proud of.
Algorithmic thinking means breaking down a problem into clear, step-by-step instructions before you even write code. Many 7th graders jump straight to typing without planning their approach, which leads to confusion and errors. Tutors help students develop this skill by teaching them to plan their code first—deciding what variables they need, what loops or conditions to use, and how data will flow through their program. This foundational skill makes coding faster, cleaner, and less frustrating.
Each path uses the same foundational programming concepts but applies them differently. Game development emphasizes graphics and user interaction, web development focuses on front-end and back-end communication, and data science centers on analyzing and visualizing information. The best approach in 7th grade is to explore different project types to see what excites your student most. Tutors can introduce various project styles and help students discover their interests while building a strong coding foundation that works for any specialization.
Personalized tutoring works well at any point. Students who are struggling benefit from one-on-one support to catch up and rebuild confidence with concepts they missed. Students who are doing well can accelerate their learning by diving deeper into advanced projects, optimizing their code, or exploring specialized topics like game development or data structures. Either way, tutoring provides hands-on practice and code review that classroom instruction alone often can't offer.
A great computer science tutor understands both the technical skills and the mindset your student needs. They should be able to explain concepts clearly, help with debugging without just giving answers, and make coding feel approachable rather than intimidating. They should also be familiar with the platforms and languages your student is using in class—whether that's Python, Scratch, JavaScript, or something else. Most importantly, they should inspire curiosity and help your student see coding as creative problem-solving, not just memorizing rules.
