Tutors are more than expert academics; they are motivational coaches. The greatest obstacle preventing a student from learning is lack of belief in their own abilities. There is no knowledge outside the reach of anyone's understanding.

I am currently student teaching full time in a 1st grade classroom at a school. I spent time during the first half of the school year student teaching in a blended 5th and 6th grade classroom. I have worked in child care and education for the past 4 years. I have been an before and after school teacher, a summer camp counselor, a kindergarten program teacher, and an infant teacher at a preschool. I have experience working with children from birth to 8th grade. Because of my experience, I know how to differentiate instruction to accommodate many types of learners. My genuine love of children and learning makes me an ideal tutor. I am enthusiastic about starting my teaching career and I would love to spend the summer helping students and families meet their individual learning goals.

I am a current middle school science teacher. Helping others is something that I love to do and always found myself wanting to explain something to someone that I felt needed help.Prior to becoming a teacher, I was in healthcare administration. I found that as new employees joined my team, I was selected every time to train them. Each employee that I trained later moved on and got promoted. After several years in the field, I realized that the best part of my job was "teaching" others. I later left and became a teacher.I love what I do. In my opinion, it takes a special type of person to be able to teach. Teaching involves the ability to adapt, patience, fluency with words, and empathy. Without these skills, it is difficult to be able to tutor and/or teach others and help them reach a level of understanding.I love be able to watch students reach that "ah-HA" once they have reached clarification and understanding. I look forward to working with you.

I am a science teacher and informal educator, and I earned my Bachelor's in Geological Sciences at the University of Michigan in May 2014. As a senior in college, I considered graduate school in geology, but I was inspired to bring science into young peoples' lives and I instead completed a rigorous three-semester program in secondary science education. For this program, I worked as a teaching intern in three different secondary science classrooms, and I learned to use the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) tutoring method with small groups of students. In addition to working with middle and high school students, I regularly tutored fellow undergraduates in Geology, Astronomy, and Oceanography classes. I tutor a variety of subjects, including standardized test preparation. I am most passionate about earth science and astronomy, but I find all tutoring work exciting. It is a privilege to work with students and to promote their growth as learners.

I believe that music plays a strong role in the life of all people. Whether you decide to become a professional musician or someone who just enjoys music it can play such a monumental role in everyone's life. Music can connect people of different backgrounds, bring people together, serve as therapy for some, and even become a career for others. I believe in teaching people how to appreciate and understand music from all over the world.

I received my Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Management from The State University of New York at Cobleskill. Cobleskill is in the upstate region among the Catskill Mountains and has outstanding wildlife and scenery. The courses I teach are Biostatistics, Plant Biology, Environmental Science, Earth Science, General Science, as well as test preparation and study skills. I strive in the Science department and I love teaching these subjects as much as I enjoy learning more skills. I started teaching when I volunteered at an Arboretum that was near my University. I became a member of their Education Committee and have taught outdoor environmental science classes both there and for an additional environmental school. I have also taught Hunter Education courses.Outside of teaching I am involved with Ducks Unlimited and other non-profit organizations. I enjoy practicing clay target shooting at ranges. I spend a great deal of time with my dogs. I love to cook and have large family meals, which makes Thanksgiving my favorite holiday! I have accomplished writing an article for Ducks Unlimited and it is published on their website. I feel accomplishments should be celebrated and I hope to bestow this upon my students.I have an approach to teaching that focuses on "HOW" I am able to present, encourage and get results for "WHAT" my students need. Having used tutoring during my education, I have learned multiple skills and I find what works for me and each individual student.I have access to numerous resources that I will use with my students so I can ensure all of the needs are being met.

I graduated from Cornell where I majored in Latin before beginning my pre-medical post-baccalaureate studies at Columbia. I greatly enjoy helping students of all ages to understand concepts, just as I have at Columbia where I would frequently guide my fellow peers through physics problems. I want to help students feel the "Ah ha!" moment of grasping a concept and breaking complex problems down to simple solutions. As a former swimmer and triathlete, I enjoy keeping physically fit. In my spare time, I enjoy playing guitar as well!

Frequently Asked Questions
3rd grade intro to coding typically introduces fundamental programming concepts like sequences, loops, and conditionals through visual, block-based languages. Students learn that coding is a series of instructions that computers follow step-by-step, and they practice breaking down problems into smaller, manageable pieces—a skill called decomposition.
At this level, the focus is on building computational thinking and problem-solving skills rather than complex syntax. Students usually create simple programs, games, or animations that help them understand how logic works in the real world.
Debugging—finding and fixing mistakes in code—is one of the most valuable skills young coders develop. When a program doesn't work as expected, it's an opportunity to investigate, not a failure. Help your child approach errors with curiosity: "What did the program do? What did you want it to do? What's different?"
Personalized tutoring is particularly helpful here because tutors can guide students through the debugging process in real-time, showing them how to read error messages, test small sections of code, and make adjustments systematically. This hands-on practice builds confidence and develops problem-solving habits that transfer far beyond coding.
Block-based coding (like Scratch or Blockly) uses visual puzzle pieces that snap together—no typing required. This format lets 3rd graders focus on learning logic and problem-solving without struggling with syntax rules. It's ideal for building foundational computational thinking skills.
Text-based coding involves typing actual code (like Python). While still accessible for motivated younger learners, it's typically introduced after students have mastered block-based concepts. Starting with blocks helps children understand programming logic first, making the transition to text-based languages much smoother later on.
Project-based learning taps into how children naturally learn best—through doing and creating. When 3rd graders build a game, animate a character, or create an interactive story, they stay motivated because they see immediate, tangible results. This hands-on approach makes abstract concepts like loops and conditionals concrete and memorable.
Personalized tutoring enhances project-based learning by allowing tutors to guide students through the entire development process: planning the project, writing code, testing it, and iterating based on feedback. This cycle of creation and refinement is exactly how real programmers work, so students develop authentic coding skills alongside enthusiasm for the subject.
The best coding tutors for young learners combine technical expertise with patience and the ability to explain concepts in age-appropriate ways. They should focus on building confidence and curiosity rather than rushing through material, and they should know how to guide students through mistakes as learning opportunities.
Look for tutors who can adapt their teaching style—some 3rd graders thrive with structured lessons, while others prefer exploration and discovery. Tutors experienced with block-based platforms and project-based learning tend to be most effective at this level. Code review and hands-on debugging practice during sessions are key indicators that a tutor will help your child truly understand coding rather than just memorize steps.
By the end of an intro to coding course, 3rd graders typically understand and can apply core concepts like sequences (step-by-step instructions), loops (repeating actions), and conditionals (if-then decisions). They can create simple programs independently, debug basic errors, and explain their thinking about how code works.
Beyond technical skills, students develop persistence, creative problem-solving, and confidence tackling challenges. Many discover whether they're interested in exploring coding further. These foundational experiences help children see themselves as capable of learning technology and often ignite a lasting interest in computer science.
Yes! While intro to coding focuses on core concepts, students often gravitate toward specific interests. Some enjoy game development (building interactive games), others love visual creativity (animation and art projects), and some are drawn to problem-solving puzzles. These different paths all teach the same fundamental logic, just in contexts that excite different learners.
Personalized tutoring helps match students with projects aligned to their interests—a child who loves storytelling might build interactive narratives, while a puzzle enthusiast might create logic challenges. This personalization keeps 3rd graders engaged and helps them discover which coding areas they might want to explore more deeply in the future.
