My name is Laura and I am a rising senior at Earlham College, which is a small liberal arts school in Indiana. I am majoring in two interdisciplinary programs--one called Peace and Global Studies, and the second called Women's, Gender, Sexuality Studies. Through these majors I have a background in English, Spanish, Arabic, history, philosophy, politics, and anthropology. I have strong reading and writing skills that I have gained from my academic career and that I have applied in two years of tutoring experience in the Earlham College Writing Center. I am especially interested in tutoring skills and subjects related to writing (every step of the process from brainstorming to proof reading!), reading practice, reading comprehension, literature and text analysis; I am able to help with these topics in standardized testing and am excited to work with any age group. I love thinking about new, big and interesting ideas in any kind of discipline and I am passionate about learning in all forms. I believe that learning can and should extend far outside the classroom, and that we learn in every aspect of our daily lives, from relationships to job skills to civil engagement to creative arts. I love teaching because I think that every single person has the ability to learn and find things they are passionate about. I am currently ABD at Indiana State University, and my focus is Curriculum Design & Empathy. I will finish my dissertation in two years. Completed the Applied Educational Neuroscience certification from Butler University. It is amazing material designed to assist educators in understanding brain regulation, inflammation of the brain, mirror neurons, empathy, etc.I have taught as an adjunct at six different colleges, a couple of private schools, a school for adult high school education, and public schools. My teaching license is for Historic Perspectives in 5th through 12th grades.

I am a recent college graduate with a degree in both Biomedical Engineering and Applied Mathematics. I worked for various departments as a tutor and Teacher's Assistant for mathematics and engineering courses starting in my sophomore year all the way through graduation. It was some of my most exciting times during my years there. For me, working with students is the most rewarding part, and I love seeing the moment a difficult concept clicks.When I tutor I adjust my teaching style to the student, and find various ways to relate the topics to real life. I'll often work with students to make sure they understand the basics or foundations of the concept or problem they are attempting and help them learn to think through and understand a process over pure memorization.

I have also coached high school cross country, track, and basketball. I attended DePauw University for my English degree, Indiana University for my teaching degree, and the University of Southern Indiana for my master's degree.

I graduate from Ball State University in May 2018 with Bachelors of Science in Biology and will be attending the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in the Fall.

I am currently a Research Engineer at Cook Research Inc. working on stent-grafts for the aorta. My education background includes Masters degrees in Biomedical Innovation and Systems Engineering from from Washington University in St. Louis. I have always had a passion for teaching, and tutoring allows me to fulfill that passion. When I was entering second grade and even a few times in college, I needed a tutor, so I know how critical one can be for success. Having been there myself, I want to provide that same help that I received to the next generation.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to be a teacher. Once I was a teacher, I realized that not only were there so many children with different educational needs, they all learned so differently!
