What's My Problem Have you ever asked yourself this question? If so, you're not alone! Many of us at some point have struggled in academic areas that seem impossible to master- I know, because I've been that student once. For this reason, I am motivated to teach and tutor students who struggle with the confidence of mastering their toughest subjects! With a Bachelors in Biology from Spelman College and a Masters in Medical Science from Indiana University School of Medicine, I know what it is like to spend countless hours studying and dissecting material, especially in the Biological Sciences! So, I have committed to doing it all over again... For you! I love teaching the Biological Sciences because it explains a lot of what happens on Earth, and even why we behave the way we do as humans. I love to incorporate exciting things such as animal models, YouTube videos and even dance moves-because I'm a dancer- into my lessons, to assist in understanding concepts. I've even traveled to Spanish speaking countries to understand the Latin culture and language to compliment my goal of becoming a bilingual physician. I believe that the best teacher is the best student, and because of that, I will forever position myself to learn.

I have been a Language Arts teacher for 15 years, mostly at the middle school level. My BA is in English and I am an avid reader, racing through audio books in particular, since I am a master multi-tasker. I enjoy doing some freelancing editing work on the side as well. I have a special talent for teaching in in multiple modalities and from a variety of perspectives, a skill that most likely comes from my own experience with dyslexia. I love working with young people to help them reach their goals and discover the extent of their talents. In my free time I enjoy riding my bike and spending time with friends, family and my quirky dog, Miinan. I am the director of a middle school theater group as well as directing occasionally at the high school level and I love to get out and experience theater whenever possible. Music, both live performances and whatever is playing on my record player or in my ear buds, is also a huge part of my life.

I am currently a doctoral student at the University of Southern California, and I completed earlier degrees at the Juilliard School in New York and at La Sierra University in Riverside, CA. At La Sierra as an undergrad, I received dual degrees with honors in violin and mathematics, both of which have led me to teaching opportunities. In tutoring either field, I enjoy the constant adaptation of finding an approach suited to each student that will help them achieve their goals. Both mathematics and music are often considered to be innate talents, but being able to assist students of any background in gaining proficiency is an exciting opportunity for me and a fulfilling one when it happens. Beyond mathematics, I also welcome tutoring opportunities in Chemistry and especially Physics, with it's mathematical foundation.Another field in which I feel passionately about helping others is in English writing. Prior to working for Varsity Tutors, I would often help my friends with editing personal statements. I have also been fortunate to enjoy a key role in a start-up orchestra in New York City as a grant writer. Writing is an indispensable life skill that is too often overlooked, and I feel that my background allows me to be of help in a variety of tutoring subjects involving writing, from test prep to grammar and mechanics.I was fortunate to do well enough on the PSAT to earn a full scholarship for my undergraduate studies, and I recognize the importance of the PSAT, SAT, and AP tests for other students in achieving their educational hopes and dreams with a minimum financial burden. I am happy to work with students to prepare them for the standardized tests in the areas within my expertise.When I am not occupied with school, one of my hobbies is cycling and bicycle mechanics. I've rebuilt a number of vintage steel bicycles, and would like to build a wheel soon. I also like to stay active on the side with video and audio editing projects.

In my spare time, I enjoy going on long runs, reading Russian novels, and attending Broadway shows.Through my five previous years of tutoring middle school, high school, and college students, I saw firsthand how diverse student learning styles can be. For example, one explanation of the concept of absolute value may be helpful to one student, but utterly confusing to another. I am a great tutor because I make it a priority to discover each individual student's problem areas and create unique lesson plans and methods of instruction. I am also extremely patient and thorough when reviewing concepts and practice problems; I am more than willing to discuss a concept two or three times in varying ways if that is what the student requires.
