Session Summaries by History Tutors

History Tutoring review by Sofia in Thousand Oaks, CA
We began by going over important themes for the 20th century, focusing on decolonization and how it overlaps with the themes of migration, economics, and state conflict. We also talked about developing technologies, again keeping in mind their broader impacts. Then we discussed some of the political/economic alliances that emerged in the 20th century, which led to a conversation about the Warsaw Pact, NATO, NAFTA, and OPEC. After that, we reviewed the requirements for each kind of essay and practiced with multiple-choice questions. We agreed that next time we'd work on more practice questions from the modern period and practice each kind of essay in our last three sessions. He's progressing nicely.

The student and I discussed the AP exam that he took last week. He then worked on a history related assignment on the opium wars and the Boxer Rebellion references in an Edgar Allen Poe story.

History Tutoring review by Radim in Thousand Oaks, CA
Today we studied world history, specifically the Renaissance and Reformation in Europe. We began with an overview of what he knew about the topics, and I gave him a lecture-style overview of this historical period. We highlighted key themes based on the sections of his textbook, and two or three times I had him review and recap what we were talking about. We concluded by answering sample questions together and considering social history aspects of the chapter. We also looked at art, focusing on differences among the art from the Dark Ages, the Italian Renaissance and the Northern Renaissance.

History Tutoring review by Erin in Thousand Oaks, CA
Today I helped the student work through a long (66 pages!) review packet for his final exam next week. The packet covered all of the grammar and vocabulary from this semester. We focused primarily on the conjugation of -er verbs and vocabulary (weather/ forecasts, slang words, days of the week, schedules/ times, etc.). I also helped him write several practice essays. Most of these focused on introductions and greetings, describing people, academic classes, and likes and dislikes. He had a positive attitude toward the material we covered during our session today. He was very determined to work through the entire packet. He'd also been practicing on his own during his free time. I left him with a few worksheets that I made for him. They mainly cover topics such as how to discuss the weather and how to correctly state and write the date.

We did ISEE practice with Section 4: Mathematics Achievement, did timed reading, and worked on a prompt strategy. The student should review essay brainstorming and the outline.

History Tutoring review by Nathan in Thousand Oaks, CA
The student and I continued to review for her upcoming test on chemical basics and thermodynamics. We looked over an old quiz which covered a lot of the material that will be on the test. As we looked through the problems, she was able to pick up her mistakes pretty quickly on some of the problems. Others she needed some instruction on, but she seemed to understand pretty quickly. We also did some problems from last session that she had a little trouble with, and she ended up being able to do them completely by herself without much instruction. She should be in good shape for her test.
