I have a passion for helping students succeed in life. This passion led to me volunteering my time as a tutor during my undergraduate studies. I helped local high school students prepare for the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) by providing them with study methods and offering assistance in math, science, and language arts. My students had a 100% pass rate for the GHSGT and were able to graduate from high school. I also helped students prepare for the ACT and SAT.My assistance is not limited to upper level students. I participated in a program called project FOCUS (Fostering Our Children's Understanding in Science); through this program I taught students in grades K-5 science. I developed lesson plans and projects that helped the students gain interest in science, as well as learn and understand science. I have also tutored students in math, reading, and language arts. When tutoring students, my goal is to understand the level the students are currently at, and how best to help them advance to higher levels. My lesson plans usually consist of worksheets and projects that focus on the area that is challenging for the students. I also sometimes allow the students to work independently in order to gauge their progress. I feel that this method provides confidence in their ability to complete the assignment.I will be as flexible as possible. I also welcome feedback and constructive criticism as I am always willing to improve my skills. I look forward to hearing from you and helping with your studies.

I am a graduate of The University of Memphis. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in literature and World Languages with a concentration in French. I graduated summa cum laude with university honors as the student marshal for The College of Arts and Sciences. I am also a member of the national honor society, Phi Kappa Phi. I am now working towards my Master of Arts in English Literature and a graduate certificate in Women's and Gender Studies with plans to complete a graduate certificate in Autism Studies as well. I believe everyone deserves access to a meaningful education and I know that not everyone thrives with the same teaching methods or paces. This is why it is so important for educators to understand their students and work with them accordingly. I enjoy reading as a pastime and one of the reasons I advocate for reading all throughout life is that it cultivates empathy, a character trait that is absolutely invaluable in this world. I would love to help you with homework!

I specialize in ACT/SAT test prep, but I'm happy to help with most subjects up to high school level. I have a particularly strong background in Econ, Government, and Computer Science, but I have worked with students in pretty much everything! I'm also currently employed by two local high schools as a speech and debate coach. I really enjoy working with students and helping them meet their potential. My goal is to make whatever we are working on approachable and easy to understand. I will always try to find multiple ways to explain or remember a problem where possible, and will do my best to help you understand 'why', so that you can do better on not only the problem in front of you, but also on other problems like it in the future.I have flexible hours and locations, and because of my coaching and other work I am often in the North-West suburbs in addition to The Cities, so I can make many locations work. I look forward to working with you!

I hold a master's degree in English from Boston College, and I have 5-6 years of tutoring experience, depending on the subject. I also teach college level writing and English.I tutor ESL/ELL, English, Writing, Editing, Grammar and Style, SAT Reading, and Literature. I most enjoy tutoring writing, since that's what I teach, and literature, since that's what I enjoy studying most.My tutoring (and teaching) style is relatively informal, since I like to make sure students are comfortable both with me and the material. I also find that a more casual setting increases students' willingness to learn and their ability to retain material. My goal is to make sure that the student not only understands the material, but is confident in their understanding, since that leads to better grades and, ultimately, a better education. When I'm not teaching or tutoring, I enjoy music, cooking, writing, watching Jeopardy obsessively, and being outside with my dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions
IB Language A: Literature SL focuses on close textual analysis, literary interpretation, and written expression in your native language or a language of proficiency. The course typically covers prose, poetry, and drama across different time periods and cultures, with emphasis on how language creates meaning and effect.
Students develop critical reading skills, analytical writing abilities, and oral communication through engagement with a diverse range of literary texts. The curriculum culminates in coursework assessments and examinations that test both analytical writing and interpretive skills.
Personalized tutoring provides detailed feedback on the elements that matter most in IB essays: thesis clarity, evidence selection, analytical depth, and language precision. A tutor can help you develop a structured approach to literary analysis, teaching you how to move beyond plot summary to examine authorial technique and thematic significance.
Through one-on-one instruction, you'll work on organizing complex arguments, integrating quotations effectively, and developing a distinctive analytical voice—all critical for earning higher marks on written assessments and the final examination.
Effective textual analysis in IB Language A requires a systematic method: identify specific literary devices (metaphor, imagery, syntax, tone), explain their effect on meaning, and connect them to broader themes or authorial intent. Rather than simply naming techniques, you need to analyze why an author chose particular language and what impact it creates.
Tutors can help you develop this disciplined analytical approach through guided practice with authentic texts, teaching you to construct arguments that move smoothly from observation to interpretation to evaluation—the hallmark of strong IB-level analysis.
Encountering unfamiliar literature on exam day is part of IB Language A, and tutoring can prepare you with strategies for confident close reading. Effective approaches include annotating as you read, identifying narrative voice and perspective, recognizing patterns in language use, and asking yourself what the author seems to be exploring thematically.
Working with a tutor, you'll practice analyzing unseen texts under timed conditions, building the skills to generate insightful analysis quickly while managing exam anxiety. This repeated practice helps you develop reliable analytical habits you can apply to any literary passage.
The oral component of IB Language A requires you to discuss literature with fluency, confidence, and analytical insight. Strong presentations balance personal engagement with the text alongside rigorous literary analysis, demonstrate clear understanding of how language works within the text, and respond thoughtfully to follow-up questions from your examiner.
Tutoring can help you prepare by practicing your presentation multiple times, refining your analysis to ensure it's specific and evidence-based, building confidence in spontaneous discussion, and developing strategies for handling unexpected questions—all key to achieving higher marks on this assessment.
Comparative analysis at the IB level requires more than listing similarities and differences—you need to build an argument about how different texts illuminate similar themes, explore comparable questions, or employ contrasting techniques for different effects. The strongest comparisons organize around thematic or analytical points rather than text-by-text summaries.
A tutor can guide you through constructing integrated comparative arguments where evidence from both texts supports each point, help you avoid the common pitfall of treating comparison as separate analyses, and teach you to articulate sophisticated insights about what the comparison reveals about literature, human experience, or the authors' craft.
Effective revision for IB Language A combines active engagement with texts (rereading with fresh questions in mind), timed writing practice on past paper prompts, and targeted feedback on specific weaknesses. Rather than passive reading, successful students annotate texts, maintain analytical notes organized by theme or technique, and practice explaining their interpretations aloud.
One-on-one tutoring accelerates progress by identifying your specific revision gaps—whether that's stronger thesis development, more sophisticated vocabulary, or deeper textual engagement—and creating a focused study plan. Regular practice essays with personalized feedback help you internalize the standards of excellence your examiners expect.
