AP English Literature and Composition Tutoring FAQ
The AP English Literature and Composition exam is one of the most difficult exams on which to achieve a perfect 5. Not only do you have to be well versed in the traditional canon of English literature, covering everything from Chaucer to Fitzgerald, but you have to be ready to tackle both essay and multiple-choice questions that test your ability to recall, interpret, and expand upon key concepts, themes, motifs, and character traits. Although you may already be enrolled in an AP English Literature class at school, preparing for the AP English Literature exam with a private tutor could further help you boost that score toward a coveted 5.
Varsity Tutors helps you select a tutor based on your unique student profile, which accounts for your specific difficulties, strengths, learning habits, and concerns about the exam. Your instructor can help you become familiar with the types of multiple-choice questions on the AP English Literature exam, gaining the ability to answer with accuracy and speed. Each tutor has extensive experience in teaching effective test-taking strategies that are tailored to the AP English Literature exam. They have aced the exam, and regularly use the skills they gained through AP English and Literature. These tutors have hands-on experience that you can't get through a textbook.
Your personal tutor can help you learn how to actively read a passage while highlighting the most important concepts and identifying material that is likely to show up in the questions. You will also learn how to eliminate nonsense answers, how to find evidence that supports an idea in a passage, and how to select the correct answer choice in the most efficient manner, ensuring you do not run out of time on test day. You can even set goals with your tutor on your time limit, such as making sure that you have ample time remaining for the written or multiple-choice sections, depending on the one that you are the most challenged by.
AP English Literature tutoring can also help you prepare for the essay portion of the test by teaching you proven essay-writing techniques, adjusted to your own unique writing style. Your tutor can teach you how to draw upon material from books that you have already read in order to answer the essay prompts effectively. You can also learn how to successfully plan out an essay in just a few minutes, as well as how to execute that essay in a coherent and concise way within the given time constraints.
The Varsity Tutors educational directors work carefully to help you select an experienced, professional tutor who is well acquainted with the demands of both an AP English Literature class and exam. The tutors are dedicated to helping you achieve your highest desired score on the exam and will work closely to guide you throughout your AP English Literature tutoring sessions. We recognize that high school students can be extremely busy with other classes, other tests, and extracurricular activities, which is why tutors are flexible when scheduling the times and locations for each meeting, including face-to-face online tutoring. This makes tutoring accessible to even the busiest students. Further, they create customized lesson plans for their students, which can be altered during a session to adjust for your learning speeds. If you master a concept quicker than expected, they may simply progress on to the next concept. If you take longer than anticipated, they can change it up and work on the subject on a deeper level.

Recent AP English Literature and Composition Tutoring Session Notes
Today we worked on responses to Freakonomics. We finished the first two chapters and she is going to work on the next four over the weekend. These will be done by Tuesday so next week we can start on a new book and a new set of assignments.
The student and I reviewed one of his essays for English. He is an extremely bright student, very impressive but wants to improve his grades his is earning on his timed essays. We thoroughly examined and dissected what he wrote and the areas he needs to focus on to earn a higher grade. He has some slight trouble with proper word choice and being able to identify an author's tone and how to write and analyze that. I went over that with him and told him he needs to keep in mind the global idea and vision of what the author is trying to accomplish, keeping in mind the genre and rhetorical strategies the author is employing.
We went over the student's government, English, and chemistry material. Much of the session was spent reviewing what is currently being covered in his classes. We reviewed organization and study skills.
I helped get the student started on a research paper. She selected a prompt, brainstormed topic ideas, took extensive notes, developed a tentative thesis statement, and devised a plan for getting started on research.
The student and I worked through her annotated bibliography assignment, editing her existing sources and annotations as well as developing a number of additional possible sources. We discussed how the creation of the outline for her research paper influences the selection of her sources, and vice versa, and came up with a rough outline to guide her through the creation of the rest of her bibliography. We made plans to meet again on Thursday in order to edit the upcoming additions to her bibliography.
During our session, the student worked on his rough draft for his Personal Statement while I proofread his rough draft for his Frankenstein assignment. Once I was done proofreading and he had written his rough draft, we edited his Frankenstein paper. He is going to print off the paper so I can do a handwritten edit of the rough draft and we can finish the final draft at our next session.
