We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

The student and I continued to work through his final review packet. Now that he has been introduced to algebra, he did much better with surface area and volume problems. He still struggles a bit with word problems, but we marked them to review during our next session. According to his mother, he made a 98% on his last math test, a marked improvement from his earlier tests. Like usual, he did very well during our session. He is to finish the sections on surface area and volume for homework, so that we can focus on his "problem" areas for the session before the final. He is to transfer his notes to a new notebook, making sure to organize it according to the chapter.

During this tutoring session we covered adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers. The student and I reviewed the rules involving whether the answer was negative or positive. I did not see any scores/grades to note progress. I did not leave her with any extra practice. I have no concerns from this session.

The student and I worked on his grammar and math homework today. We reviewed subjects and objects of sentences and how to identify them using clues from the verb. Then we focused on math and how to work through a problem (especially charts) to identify the slope. We spent the last fifteen minutes talking about general goals as he prepares for graduation and high school.

The student and I spent the session reviewing for a test she will take tomorrow. We began by doing practice problems involving writing proportions to figure out missing side lengths on similar shapes. We then went back and did several problems involving vertical angles, complementary angles, and supplementary angles. We reviewed important vocabulary and classified triangles using sides and angles. I asked her to review the terms associated with the unit (complementary vs. supplementary, scalene, isosceles, etc.). Once she was able to set up her problems, she did very well with solving them. My main focus was to help her quickly identify vocabulary so she will easily be able to set up the problems when she sees them on the test.

The student has a final exam in math this coming Tuesday. Her teacher has provided her with a large packet reviewing concepts from past units/chapters. Tonight we reviewed point slope format, graphing linear equations, and solving inequalities through elimination and substitution. The student has a firm grasp on these concepts and understands them but is a little rusty, with review she quickly remembers and can quickly complete the problem. We are planning on meeting this coming Monday night to prepare for the exam on Tuesday.

The student will have an exam on Thursday on Statistics. We used her statistics review sheet as a guide. I rewrote the questions for her by changing the numbers and samples. The student did very well. Topics included finding mean, mode, median, range, upper quartile, lower quartile, upper value, lower value, outliers, box and whisker plots, leaf, trees, and keys. Next session will focus on slope. The student is extremely enthusiastic. We did a two minute challenge that the student was able to complete in less than the two minutes.
