Laurie
Certified Tutor
My day job is in the field of applied behavior analysis: I spend a lot of my time working to teach clients new skills and improve their lives. My most fulfilling moments are when a student is finally able to independently complete a task they weren't able to before.
This comes through in my tutoring. I utilize BST (behavior skills training) and a variety of best teaching practices from the field of ABA to help my students quickly master subjects to fluency. I am positive, I am patient, and I am skilled at working with students that need a little extra help or a slightly different approach to master knowledge. I would love to help you, too!

What is your teaching philosophy?
I teach with fluency as the end goal. I want my students to not only understand material, but to retain it and be able to use it in a wide variety of settings, long after I am finished working with them.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
The first step to teach any person anything is to assess their current abilities first.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Independence is key to fluency, which should always be the end goal of learning. I work with my students to generalize knowledge and utilize knowledge acquisition skills so they can begin to independently acquire new knowledge. Learning how to ask questions is a task that is just as important as learning how to provide the right answers.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
My background is in ABA, and I am skilled at utilizing specific praise and naturalistic reinforcement on an appropriate schedule to maintain learning gains and keep a learner motivated and excited to learn.
