Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

Calculus Tutoring review by Matthew in Markham, IL
We went over polynomial division. Specifically, we covered long division and synthetic division. We also discussed how to identify greatest common factors and how to group polynomial terms in order to simplify. The student quickly understood the material and had a firm command over it by the end of our tutoring session. At the end of the session, we went over a few homework problems and she had no problem solving them.

We went over 2 recent homework assignments. The assignments this week were focused on probability theory. We explored conditional probabilities and how to interpret them. We also examined how to calculate the mean from probabilities. Lastly, we reviewed how to construct contingency tables and their use. The student appeared to easily grasp the material after spending some time reviewing these concepts.

Calculus Tutoring review by Helen in Markham, IL
We worked on adding together a set number of coins to add to a specific sum. The student improved measurably throughout the session, and by the close of the session was doing the problems with very little assistance. She seems to struggle with mental math - but does not have trouble when she adds and subtracts on paper.

Calculus Tutoring review by John in Markham, IL
In today's session, we covered linear models, generalized linear models, data cleaning, labeling, dummy variables and rankings. The student was very excited to be getting closer to quantifying the relationships between the variables of interest in her data set. We both have homework: I will revise our preliminary model, she will label her data variables, clean the data, and list any causative dynamics between variables she is aware of or would like to model.

Calculus Tutoring review by Kendall in Markham, IL
The student and I had a great first session today going over some math from his previous year's class. He knew exactly what he needed to work on and pointed out the chapters and sections that his teacher wanted him to review. We spent today reviewing percentages, fractions, and how to calculate simple interest. He said he was a little rusty in math after the summer, but he got the hang of things really quickly. We went over how to calculate a percentage of a certain number by using proportions and by using decimals. After working through a bunch of straightforward percentage problems, we moved on to calculating simple interest. That was definitely the most challenging part of our session, but he had a great attitude and stayed focused -- by the end, he seemed pretty comfortable with these problems, which is great! I look forward to working with him more and helping him catch up so that he can be on track for the coming school year.
