My academic background is in engineering. As a female engineer, I was in the fourth graduating class that admitted women at Johns Hopkins University. However, the desire to pass on my love of math and science, and the ability to solve problems, prompted me to pursue a teaching career. Working for the past three years as a full time teacher, I have been able to pass on my love for the principles of engineering and problem-solving in a private school environment. I have taught high school math, from PreAlgebra up to and including AP Calculus, as well as science, including Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I love the educational environment and interacting with the students. There is nothing I like more than showing students that math and science aren't the "boogie man" they believe they are and encouraging them to pursue STEM careers. In my personal life, I have been happily married for over 30 years and have two grown and successful children. I love sports, particularly tennis, football and volleyball. I also jog everyday and live reading and watching mysteries, gardening and cooking.

I'm Lorenzo! I'm a rising senior at the University of Pennsylvania studying engineering and education. Teaching has been a lifelong passion and in school I am a part of multiple tutoring organizations in the Philadelphia area. I am passionate about math and science (especially computer science), as they form a basis of thinking that can help in every other subject. I also thoroughly enjoy teaching Writing, English, and History because their applications are so useful in the real world. Other than my abilities, I bring positive energy and attitude that is great for any student.

My expertise is in classroom, small group, and one-on-one instruction in physics of the first year. I have, however, taught at all levels from non-science major courses through the graduate physics curriculum. My education includes a bachelor's degree in physics from Amherst College and a doctorate from Stanford University. During my career I spent time at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, the University of California, San Diego, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology, and Brandeis University, where I worked for nearly 40 years. I am a firm believer that students learn in STEM fields only by doing, not by merely listening. Thus the core of any tutoring experience with me is working on problems. The most formative experience a student can have is to work through a problem, explaining each step to the tutor as he or she goes through it. Only by explaining the concepts and skills to someone else can one be sure of his or her own understanding. My goal in any tutoring interaction is to assist the student in gaining the necessary skills, knowledge, and confidence to attack any conceivable problem set to him or her by a classroom teacher.

I served as a teaching assistant for basic Mathematics and Statistics courses when I was completing my Masters degree at Stony Brook University. I received my Bachelors degree from Columbia University, where I also served as a tutor. I have also tutored countless number of CUNY students studying to pass the CUNY Assessment test in Math. Each student is unique, and I understand that the techniques and style I use is tailored directly towards the needs of the student. I am a very good listener, and I try my best to make my students very comfortable at all times. My main objective is to provide the best service available to my students, and the student is always my number one priority.

My academic credentials include a Bachelor of Mathematics degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and a Master of Aeronautical Engineering from Stanford University. I am retired from 40+ years of engineering. The last thirty years was working in the flight simulation industry. I had responsibility for doing mathematical modeling of many systems which kept my my math and science skills well exercised. The flight simulation experience also involved frequent use of computer languages such as Ada, C, C++ and less frequent use of other computer languages such as python and java. Tutoring was part of the engineering environment as new engineers were assigned to my group. I earned extra money during my college years tutoring. Though money is not the end objective since retirement, I enjoy tutoring to remain active and challenged. The interaction with students is invigorating. Tutoring gives me a sense of contributing to the well-being of others. It is offering up my skills to help others get a strong start on a career. My tutoring style is to explain principles and possibly do a sample problem, but then observe the student apply the principles to work a problem, gently nudging them in the right direction. I am attending the University of Pennsylvania where I am majoring in Bioengineering on the premed track, with my goal after graduation to become an orthopedic surgeon.
