Tutoring review by Margaret in Nebraska
The student and I discussed her chemistry homework. We discussed her lab conclusion, how to formalize her language, and how to target her intended audience. We talked about walking her audience through her experiment procedure, and how much info she needs to include versus how much she can leave out. We talked about making sure the dependent, independent, controlled, and related variables were discussed, and why. She was very good about grasping the concept of a more formal lab discussion and why that's important! I compared it to English, and she got it right away. Good job.

Tutoring review by Mary K in Nebraska
The student had an excellent session. She had her review that covered material that she will be tested over in the next couple of days. The material included multiplication in both standard and expanded form. She lost some points on her review because of the misplacement of a couple of 0s. We came up with another strategy to help her stay organized throughout the problem. She will try putting "x" in the place where a zero would normally go as the placeholder, with her understanding that when combining her terms towards the end of the problem that the "x" represents a 0. We then did a few more problems working on the expanded form with this strategy. We followed up this practice with world problems that required multiplication. She did a great job with these word problems, especially identifying the information that was "junk" and inserted to confuse her. Great session! Good luck on your test!

Tutoring review by Alexis in Nebraska
We covered vector basis. The student explained to me what they were and walked me through an example of what they did in class. I think that with practice and a few supplemental materials, he will be able to successfully understand the topic. It seems that he has a better understanding of the vector basis. We are going to meet once a week instead of twice per his request, and I think that he will do well with the new material.

We looked over Unit 4 of Orientation to Online Learning. The student had already written his discussion and responses and had several ideas written down. We revised his work together.

Tutoring review by Katie in Nebraska
Having received comments on the rough draft of the student's essay that he turned in earlier this week, today he was ready to make revisions. Using narrative techniques that he's been working on in class, we focused on engaging the reader through a highly descriptive relation of specific events involving his grandfather, the subject on whom his essay is based. We also worked to eliminate wordiness and run-on sentences for increased clarity. When kept on task, he does an excellent job of correcting his own mistakes and incorporating new concepts introduced in class. When we meet again on Sunday, we'll review the final draft of his essay once more before he turns it in.

Tutoring review by Thomas in Nebraska
Today we reviewed material for the student's lab including IR, C-NMR, H-NMR in order to figure out the unknown molecule. She needs to continue to study functional groups, but definitely seems a lot more comfortable with the basics.
