Woodbridge Elementary Algebra Tutoring FAQ
An introduction to algebraic concepts can open the doors to innumerable academic fields and applications. Chemistry, computer science, engineering, physics, and even music theory require an intimate knowledge of numerical manipulation. Elementary algebra courses often require students to begin working with variables and graphs simultaneously, working through equations, simplifications, functions, and other topics all at once. In a traditional setting, teachers often breeze through some subjects and focus on others. If your child is struggling to remember the difference between the associative and commutative properties, or is baffled by linear transformations, Varsity Tutors can help you connect with an elementary algebra tutor who may be able to help. Through one-on-one tutoring sessions, your child can receive individualized attention that can promote their learning to a whole new level.
Elementary algebra tutoring sessions are custom-designed to fit the needs of each individual student. If your child is looking to work ahead looking to refresh or strengthen their foundations in mathematics, a tutor can provide them with the academic guidance they need to meet their personal goals. With Varsity Tutors, you can create a student profile that details information like the syllabus, schedule, strengths and weaknesses, and more, for your child. Tutors use this information to create a custom-tailored study plan that focuses on building the skills necessary to succeed, not only in early math classes, but in the future ones as well.
Tutors understand that math can be a difficult subject and that this difficulty can be easily compounded if a teacher's methods of instruction do not align with a student's unique learning habits. When you contact Varsity Tutors, their directors begin to construct a learning profile based on your child's academic requirements, interests, areas for improvement, learning style, and even personality. This comprehensive picture allows your tutor to help you to create a collaborative teaching environment tailored to your child's needs. With a custom plan, the tutor can make adjustments on the go as your child masters new concepts or struggles with others. Your child's hand-picked tutor is capable of teaching to their specific learning style and is dedicated to ensuring your child is able to learn in full. With a personal tutor, they can strive to achieve their greatest potential.
Elementary algebra tutoring can proceed at the pace that works best for your child, targeting the concepts that give your child the most difficulty and only briefly reviewing those concepts that have already been mastered. The personal attention available through elementary algebra tutoring allows you to collaborate with your tutor in developing lesson plans that specifically focus on the concepts most pertinent to you or your child. The tutor can work alongside you to keep you up-to-date on your child's progress, assessments, reports, and more.
Your child's tutor works to make their learning environment both personal and comfortable. Your child's algebra tutoring sessions can take place at the times and locations of your choosing, whether you prefer to meet in person on weekday evenings at a local library or weekend mornings in your own living room. Tutors even offer the convenience of face-to-face online lessons to help accommodate your busy schedule. If your child has after school activities, daycare, or other things going on in their life, their tutor will ensure that the tutoring schedule is well balanced around these.
The fully customized and student-oriented nature of these tutoring options make these sessions as effective, efficient, and convenient as possible. This is for a session on Wed. 5/15. We worked on both math and science. There were a couple of math worksheets on compound inequalities that needed to be completed and checked. The student had some trouble in graphing 'and' problems. When we broke them down into two separate inequalities, things seemed to go more smoothly. We continued working on the science newspaper. We looked more closely at the grammar. The water cycle comic strip and letter to the editor were completed appropriately; the weather map still needed some work.
We continued going over the practice test, particularly those problems that the student had indicated gave him the most trouble. Our major focus today was what indications a problem gave that you should divide, and then identifying which number you should divide by.
The student practiced permutations and probability questions as a brief review for the lessons covered in class during the week.
The student practiced simplifying and dividing of polynomials.
The student was given long division practice of polynomials for HW.
We continued to work on finding the areas of rectangles, triangles, and circles. We completed a math homework sheet with a number of problems in which the student was required to "find the shaded area" of a shape by subtracting the unshaded areas from the area of the total shape. We also went over some problems she had copied from the board in class but didn't really understand. She understood each problem after I started to explain it to her, and she was able to explain the problem back to me. But she had trouble figuring out how to start each problem by herself-- she needed me to start her in the right direction. I think she has a much better grasp of the material now, but she needs to keep practicing until she is able to do these types of math problems by herself.
We practiced a lot of long division and it shows that she has improved a lot on it. We practiced more of the multiplication facts. She still doesn't know all of them right away, but is able to figure it out. I would like it for her to know her multiplication facts right away, without having to pause to think about them. I am sure with a little more practice she will accomplish that goal.
