Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

University of Louisville, KY Statistics tutoring
The student's homework was finding the roots of equations with radical terms. After we watched a video online that explained the concept of extraneous roots, she had little problem with the homework. We then reviewed the "completing the square" method of finding the roots. After a few practice problems, she seemed comfortable with that method. In general, quadratic equations seem to come easily for her. We spent the last half hour going over a test she had not done well on. The test was on logarithmic equations, with some function transformations, and she needs to learn this material for the final unit test. We agreed to spend the majority of our next session on the test and similar practice problems.

The student's math packet focused on ratios. She seems to have a pretty good understanding of how they work. She needed to be reminded of how to handle dividing a number by a larger number, but other than that, she did very well today.

The students and I worked with some of the problems on their review packets. They both pick up concepts quickly. There were some concepts that were not clear to them, such as the IVT, and after I explained them, they got it right away. Some problems only needed to be broken down to smaller steps to get the answer, and they both did well at that once I showed them how.

The students began by finishing their homework on cube roots. After they were done, I worked with them on a skill that caused them to struggle: combining like terms. After going over a few problems together, they practiced on their own in an online program and leveled up! I then recommended more skills online for them to practice. As they worked, I helped as necessary. They were very motivated to make progress today.

The students both completed spelling assignments with a minimal amount of assistance. The brother needed occasional prompts to complete his reading responses. He did very well writing in complete sentences. He worked on showing multiplication problems using visuals (groups and rows). He worked on his nightly reading while I assisted his sister with her math worksheet. She worked on multiplying and reducing fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers.

The students both had another assignment due online that covered logs. We reviewed the product rule, quotient rule, and power rule of logs. They were still feeling a little uneasy about the material. We reviewed the rules, and I had them break down each question using those rules. I helped them realize that as long as they use those rules, they can break down any of the questions in this assignment (which they could). They seemed to have a better handle of the material, and I encouraged them to continue to practice. I also helped Student 1 with one of his Spanish project assignments. He had to do a presentation on Peru, and I helped him with his translations.
