Recent Tutoring Session Reviews

Tutoring review by Melinda in Largo, FL
Today we spent our session reviewing Quadratic Equations, specifically 10-2, 10-4, and 10-6 which the student has a quiz on Monday about. We spent the first half hour reviewing 10-2, going over how to graph quadratic equations. I showed an example problem and then had her try doing a few herself. She seemed to do fine so we moved on to 10-4, solving quadratic equations. After a few examples we moved on to 10-6, using the quadratic formula. I showed her an example and then she did a few herself. I recommended that she always surround her negative numbers with parenthesis. At the end of our session she said she had no further questions for me and I let her know that she was free to text/email me if she anything came up later in the week. We made plans to meet at the same time the following week.

We started with the last chapter his class is covering over the chi-square distribution. We covered one type of chi-square problem involving the test of independence. The student liked these problems because they were very similar to the last two chapters. Then we had about 30 minutes left to start working on his review for the final exam. We still have two more sessions before his final exam on Thursday.

We reviewed the student's exam last week. I felt he did well. We also worked on his learning statistical procedures in the R programming language. R assignments are part of his class. We discussed finding pdf values, percentiles, and cdf values. We then talked about random number generation in R. He was very good at this, he had a CS background, and mainly just had me explain the concepts of what the program was doing.

We are continuing to refine the student's integral technique. She is good at the algorithmic approach. She sometimes struggles with solving inequalities, especially when there were more than two terms involved, so we will make that a priority moving forward using a number line approach.

We quickly reviewed the history homework that is due for tomorrow's class. It was on the Athenian Empire. We primarily focused on English. The student is learning the Odyssey. She completed questions for chapter 22. We then made a game plan to review the book. She will review the chapters this weekend and she will make flashcards for the people and places. We will review the homework questions on Monday and Tuesday.
