I grew up in a small town that didn’t even have a high school. Some of us had the resources to drive, but many of my friends and I depended on the county to bus us almost an hour across the desert to get to school every morning. I’d sit on the torn leather seats with a book over my knees, a scratch paper and pencil and study because I knew education was the best means of pursuing my dreams. Mentors and teachers invested in me, seeing beyond my socioeconomic barriers and fanning my potential in flame. My peers that grew up down the road became my learning community, and together we worked for a better life. Now, my Bachelor’s degree in Biology hangs on my wall, and I am pursuing a career in nursing at the University of New Mexico. I am passionate about passing down what I have learned. To encourage lifelong, autonomous learning, to instill passion in others treading a similar path, and to forge the confidence required to tackle the challenging demands of higher education is ultimately my goal as a tutor. I put my students and their needs first, and I am willing to teach in any personalized style that will yield the best result for that student. I know practical methods to teach students in auditory, visual, or kinesthetic styles. I am fluent in Spanish and well trained in molecular biology, physiology, and mathematics, but I still enjoy pursuing other hobbies such as multimedia artwork, soccer and the outdoors. I hope to help any student get one step closer to achieving their dreams.

After several years in an industry that spanned residential and commercial construction, electronics, and refrigeration, I added yet another occupation to my resume when the director of a school encouraged me to become a teacher of mathematics. I had been tutoring students in mathematics, and it was their improvement that caught his attention. During my first year in the classroom, a girl one day said "I no know you do" (English was not her first language)and burst into tears in front of her peers. That day and that incident sparked my quest to really understand how students learn and how they make meaning of information. I already had my degree in secondary mathematics education from Bethel College in Indiana, but my quest to better understand students led to a master's degree in secondary education from the University of Alabama and a PhD in multicultural education from Capella University in Minnesota. A firm foundation is just as important in learning as it is in constructing buildings, so I focus on helping students gain a good grasp of the basics that will serve them well as they progress to higher levels of mathematics. I will help students make personal application of the concepts they are learning, and I will always answer the ever-present question of "When am I ever going to use this stuff?" Algebra and Geometry are my favorite subjects to tutor because of the many new concepts that are introduced, but I am very comfortable with all levels of mathematics through Algebra II. Mathematics has served me well over the years, and I want to help others gain the same appreciation for it. Finally, I want to make learning enjoyable.

I graduated from The George Washington University in 2015 with a BA in International Affairs. After graduating college, I moved to the Mississippi Delta to teach with Teach for America. Teach for America (TFA) is an AmeriCorps program that recruits, trains, and places top college graduates in high needs schools throughout the country. During my time with TFA, I taught a variety of science courses in my placement high school, including state tested biology. I am a certified biology and social studies teacher for grades 7-12. My time teaching has been both rewarding and challenging. One of my focuses as a lead science teacher was to work with students on college readiness. From ACT prep to rigorous lab based science instruction, we saw students grow five points on the ACT and increased the pass rate on the state exam. As my time with Teach for America comes to an end, I am excited to continue my commitment to education with Varsity Tutors. Currently I am working on a Master’s in Public Health at Emory University.

One of my most profound joys comes from guiding learners in the process of accelerating growth, closing academic gaps, and believing in themselves. Ensuring their future success is more than a passion for me: It is my mission.I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education from West Chester University and a Master of Arts in Administration, Supervision, Curriculum Planning, and Instruction from Georgian Court University. Throughout my teaching career, I have also engaged in numerous training and research opportunities. Most recently, I took a course entitled "Penn Literacy Network 1" as well as several additional educational workshops from the University of Pennsylvania. My philosophy of teaching is that educators must ensure each learner is reaching his/her full potential by attending to "the whole child". In addition to providing excellent academic instruction, teachers must also address the social and emotional needs of students and create exciting learning environments where they are eager to learn and participate. Instructionally, I believe in the use practices that are research-based and rooted in Universal Design. This includes multi-sensory, hands-on, mnemonic, and metacognitive approaches that address the needs of individuals of various learning styles and ability levels. It is also my strong belief that educators must provide well-planned, explicit instruction as well as highly engaging co-constructive learning opportunities that build critical thinking skills, encourage lifelong learning, and pave the way for future success. I work tirelessly to ensure that I uphold all of these values while maintaining a high spirited, engaging, supportive, and motivating learning environment. In reporting on my teaching performance, principals have used descriptors such as: "Mrs. Berodyn takes her students on a journey of excitement and exploration.", "The success rate of her students in high.", and "She is a model for teachers to emulate."My prior experience includes 28 wonderful years as a resource room teacher in New Jersey. I taught in K-5 whole group, inclusionary classrooms as well as in small group, individualized settings for learning disabled students. My passion and dedication was recognized there with a "Teacher of the Year Award" and a listing in Who's Who Among America's Teachers. After moving to Pennsylvania, I also had the great pleasure of teaching for 5 years as a Basic Skills Instructional Aide, providing targeted tutoring to individuals and small groups of kindergarten through 6th grade students. In both career experiences, the goal of my instruction was to inspire a love of learning, increase student skills, and close achievement gaps in reading, writing, spelling and math.Currently, I tutor in reading, writing, spelling, and math for students in kindergarten through 4th grade as well as adult literacy. Although I truly enjoy teaching all of these subject areas, I am most passionate about reading. Because it is most critical to the future success of my students, I have engaged in extensive literacy research and received training in a number of multi-sensory and specialized reading program (such as Wilson, Lindamood-Bell, Preventing Academic Failure, SRA Reading Mastery, Stevenson, Reading Recovery, and Corrective Reading). I take great pride and joy in knowing that I have helped hundreds of students overcome significant reading difficulties. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, hiking, cooking, listening to music, playing guitar, and taking pictures!

I am passionate about helping students do well in their coursework because I know what it is like to struggle with understanding certain concepts. There would be times where I didn't know how to answer a type of problem or how to ask questions. I found that the greatest solution to being stuck in these situations is to ask for help from someone who knows the material and can explain it to me in a way that I can understand. I work towards helping students understand the concepts behind their coursework so that they'll know how to answer questions they face on homework assignments and exams. I like to ask students questions about the topic with which they are having trouble to gauge their understanding while also challenging them to think.I have a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences from Rutgers University-New Brunswick. I tutored students throughout all four years of my undergraduate career, ranging from elementary students to fellow undergraduate students. I helped elementary students who spoke English as a second language in math and reading for a year, I taught Chemistry to other undergrad students for a whole academic year, and I tutored middle school students and high school students in subjects with which they had trouble for a year and a half. These subjects were often algebra, geometry, and physics.

I attended the University of Texas at Arlington where I obtained a Bachelor's of Science in Economics with a minor in mathematics as well as a Master of Arts in Economics. Additionally, I recently graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas with a Master of Science in Statistics. Whatever the setting or pursuit, I adhered to particular courses of action, inadvertently then deliberately, that may be expressed concisely as the following: comprehension and practice compromise the prudent approach to learning. During my tenure in graduate school, I served as a graduate teaching assistant. This required me to grade, tutor, and proctor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
