I am a doctoral candidate in the field of educational leadership and a graduate of the University of Minnesota. I have lived in 3 different countries in the last five years and absolutely love traveling. My favorite part of traveling is interacting with people from different parts of the world and learning about different cultures through language, food, music, and exploring! I have over 10 years of experience working in education. My experiences range from working in public schools in the United States to teaching adult English language learners in Djibouti. My favorite part of teaching and tutoring is getting to help others solve problems as well as reach their goals. I have extensive knowledge of the academic and social-emotional standards for early childhood and elementary aged children (based on the U.S. education system), familiarity with the British education system, and lots of experience working with adult learners as well.

I recently graduated with a chemistry degree from St. Olaf College, and when I wasn't in the lab, I was probably in our music building, practicing some Rachmaninoff or singing some Schubert. While both music and science are massive parts of my life, Ive decided to continue with a career in chemistry, primarily within the pharmaceuticals and medical device industry. To prepare myself, I took a variety of upper-level courses, including advanced organic chemistry, biochemistry, and advanced inorganic chemistry, and by participating in analytical, organic, and biophysical chemistry research for over two years. Thanks to my hard work, Im now contracted at Medtronic, using my chemistry toolbox to help solve real world problems! For me, tutoring is the best way for me to give back to those who have taught me so much.During college, I TAed for the one class that is the bane of school for most students: organic chemistry. I worked with all sorts of students, ranging from pre-med football players to graduate-school-bound biology majors. Regardless of the student, they usually had the same questions: how can I succeed in ochem? The way I see it, organic is a whole new language, and, like a language, you have to spend hours practicing the basics before you finally feel a bit comfortable with it. To help speed up this process, Ive developed techniques, strategies, and methods for students to get the most of their learning. No more memorizing reactions or mechanismsinstead, I like to focus on basic concepts, like electronegativity and acid-base trends, to help rationalize and categorize the "magic" that goes on in organic chemistry. Moreover, I like to apply this kind of thinking throughout all of chemistry and biology, and its worked well for a variety of students Ive tutored. Most importantly, I try to make meaningful connections or analogies between chemistry and the world, making it easier to see just how cool chemistry can be.While I could probably spend almost all day in the lab, I like to keep myself busy with other things. In my free time, other than studying opera or jamming out with my friends, I like to cook (nothing better than homemade pasta and sauce), bake, and be outdoorseither rollerblading, water skiing (if its summer), Nordic skiing (if its winter), hiking, or biking.

I have been retired from professional psychology for three years. I have enjoyed spending time as an information volunteer at the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, and I help with the care of my young grandson. In my free time I love reading, music, and learning Spanish. All of my life I have enjoyed learning new skills and solving problems. When something has to be done, I want to solve the challenge of finding the easiest and simplest way to achieve that goal. I want to meet people where they are and together discover where they would like to be. I want to agree on the best goals, and the best way to achieve those goals.I enjoy working with children and adults one on one or in small groups. My first step would be to get to know you. What do you enjoy? What excites you? What do you want to achieve? What are you most fearful about. What frustrates you? We will work together to set the best goals, and to decide how to reach them.I am looking forward to getting to know you and to start working together on reaching your goals.

Hi! I'm Steve, and hopefully I can be the person who helps get you up to speed with Spanish! I went to school at UW - Eau Claire and I have my Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish for Business. While I studied at UWEC, I also studied abroad for about 5 months in Valladolid, Spain, where I was really able to enhance my Spanish skills, and gain fluency in the language. Travel and culture are some of my passions, and living in Europe helped bring those passions to life. It is so fulfilling to be able to travel and know the native language, and that is the type of passion that I hope to inspire in my students. While in Spain, I taught English to a number of students, and through this and my own personal experiences learning Spanish (and American Sign Language!), I feel I know the best ways to get in touch with my students. Some of my hobbies include running, coffee, learning Italian and, you guessed it, TRAVEL! ¡Nos vemos pronto!

ACT Writing Tutor • +19 Subjects

I have been working with students of different ages since 2005. I am passionate about education, especially writing, as I believe that a sense of self-possession and empowerment about the value of your own thoughts, ideas, and critical abilities can be one of the most animating and communicatively effective tools. My area of expertise is in composition, essay-writing, and critical analysis. I have been teaching undergraduate classes since 2014; I have taught one semester at the graduate level. I am currently in the final stages of my doctorate, which I am completing at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. My dissertation focuses on life writing, political theory, and trans-national identities in the 20th century. Prior to my time in the Georgetown German Department, I completed my Master's in Comparative Literature at the University of Chicago; and prior to that I completed my undergraduate degree in Comparative Literature and Cultural History at Marlboro College. I have consistently applied myself across fields and topics, and feel that I have found an intellectual and personal home in writing, composition, literature, cultural analysis, and education. I very much enjoy working through the nuts and bolts of essay writing and drafting with students, and am delighted by the array of learner types. I bring passion, energy, patience, and individualized focus to my educational disposition, and to every tutoring experience.

I am currently a senior at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and I am double majoring in Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development and French. I am pre-med, so I do hope to go to medical school next year and am currently in the process of applying. I graduated from Hinsdale Central High School in 2012, and there I was a member of the National Honors Society which was my first experience with tutoring. I am currently a volunteer at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital, and I help patients and siblings with homework and reading there, as well.I am passionate about the life sciences and the French language, and I love helping others foster a deeper understanding in these two particular subjects! I also genuinely enjoy algebra and statistics and am quite the grammarian. From preschool to college, I actually loved going to school every day and learning, and I hope to bring that love to others, also! I spent the fall of 2014 in Montpellier, France, and there I worked on mastering the French language. When I am not studying, you can find me doing a puzzle, baking, reading, going for a walk, or watching the Blackhawks and the White Sox.
