I am listening to and learning about him or her as an individual. I can also discover what motivates the student during this conversation and plan for how to frame future tutoring sessions in terms of what the student already knows and enjoys.

I am a sophomore at Johns Hopkins University studying Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. I tutor many STEM subjects, SAT/ACT prep, and AP/IB classes! In the years past, I've mentored two robotics teams and I have experience tutoring at my school and in my neighborhood. I deeply believe that an intuitive understanding of educational content is crucial to success, and I implement this philosophy by teaching problem-solving techniques and strategies in addition to the material. In my free time, I love to read, paint, crochet, and watch TV shows. :)

I am a rising senior at Duke University majoring in Psychology and minoring in English. I first started tutoring when I was 10; I'd explain new words in books to my little sister and help her with cursive, work on times tables with my older brother, and teach the little bit of English I knew to my immigrant parents. I tutored students in my middle school through a counseling program, helped deaf and disabled students develop social and creative skills, and freelance tutored throughout high school, and have tutored Spanish-speaking immigrant families (ages 6-12) in Durham, NC since October 2018. Other teaching experiences include training my dog to go down a slide on command and teaching my 10th-grade precalculus teacher how to hand whistle. Though I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Literature, and Writing. I believe reading and writing are not only complex forms of thinking, but avenues for understanding someone else's unique perspective and ways of being in life. I have the most fun helping my students dissect arguments and meaning from texts, especially when it's in Spanish, my native language. When I'm not tutoring, I most likely am listening to music, playing board games with my family, or looking at cat videos online.

I am a rising senior at Duke University who is Pre Med and majoring in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. I was born and raised in Miami FL and went to public school until college (Sunset Elementary, GW Carver Middle and Coral Reef Senior High for those from Miami). I decided to start tutoring because I would not be on this path had I not had good teachers supporting me along the way. For that reason I want to be able to help others achieve their goals without academics being a huge hurdle.

I'm passionate about guiding high schoolers through the college application process. The admissions process is probably one of the most confusing, anxiety-inducing experiences you'll have in high school, but I'm full of ideas for making the entire process as successful and stress-free as possible. I've successfully guided many students through every stage of admissions -- from figuring out where to apply and then staying organized and on-track, to "packaging" themselves and producing a perfect personal statement -- and I love witnessing them achieve their admissions dreams.

I am graduated from Penn State University in Industrial Engineering in 2017. I've tutored ever since I was in high school, and I love helping people! I like to help my students understand math (and other topics) instead of just doing it blindly. My goal is to help my students improve their math (and other topics) and build skills that will help them find learning easier in the future! Fun fact, I used to work for Disney and I like to salsa dance!

I'm a passionate explorer, educator, and scientist. I am a Planetary Science Researcher (PhD, 2008). I write grants to NASA to use spacecraft data to study the composition and evolution of rocky planetary bodies (Moon, Mercury, asteroids). My research is broad and interdisciplinary that equips me to tutor many subjects and also to show students connections between subjects when it improves subject mastery. I have been teaching and tutoring for over twenty years, at every level of my education and career. In high school I taught aerospace education and aviation search and rescue while I earned my pilot's license. As an undergraduate at Duke I tutored athletes in Geology, Calculus, and Electrical Engineering core courses and I was a teaching assistant for Computer Science and Linear Circuits Laboratory. In graduate school I was a teaching assistant in geology. And as a professor, I've taught undergraduate and graduate science courses at a major U.S. research university. Most recently I designed a combined English and Engineering elective to students with limited English Proficiency at a small university in Colombia.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Haines City's 14 schools with personalized tutoring support. Whether your student attends an elementary, middle, or high school in the area, we can match them with tutors who understand Polk County's curriculum standards and can help them succeed in their specific courses and grade level.
With an average student-teacher ratio of 19.6:1 in Haines City schools, many students benefit from personalized 1-on-1 instruction to get individualized attention. Tutoring fills that gap by providing focused support tailored to your student's learning pace and specific challenges, whether they're working to master foundational skills or tackle advanced material.
Tutors who work with Haines City students are familiar with Florida's B.E.S.T. Standards and Polk County's curriculum expectations across subjects like math, reading, science, and social studies. They design sessions around what your student needs to master in their specific courses, whether that's preparing for state assessments, strengthening core skills, or getting ahead in advanced classes.
Students in Haines City frequently seek tutoring in math and English language arts, especially as they transition between grade levels or prepare for standardized testing. We also connect students with tutors in sciences, social studies, test prep (SAT, ACT, and Florida assessments), and advanced subjects like AP and honors courses.
The first session is focused on understanding your student's goals, learning style, and current academic needs. The tutor will assess where your student stands in their subject, identify specific areas for improvement, and create a personalized plan for future sessions—all while building rapport so your student feels comfortable and supported.
Many students in Haines City see meaningful progress within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, though the timeline depends on your student's starting point and goals. Some students need help catching up on foundational skills, while others are working to move from a B to an A or prepare for a major test—each journey is different, and tutors adjust their approach based on progress.
Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions. Varsity Tutors works with families to create flexible plans that fit different budgets—you can start with a few sessions per week and adjust as needed. We recommend discussing your budget and goals when connecting with a tutor to find an arrangement that works for your family.
Getting started is simple—tell us about your student's grade level, subject, and goals, and we'll match them with a tutor who's a good fit. You can then schedule your first session at a time that works for your family, and the tutor will take it from there with personalized instruction designed for your student's needs.
