I was born and raised in Orange County. I went to UCSB but then moved back to Orange County to be near my family. After working in accounting and finance for a few years, I went back to school to get my masters and credential in teaching. I now teach high school math and truly love my job!

I graduated from Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, FL, with an IB Diploma. I completed a dual-degree program at the University of Florida in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation as well as Zoology, with a minor in Chemistry. In college, I worked for a radioactive chemistry lab, working with isotopes in analyzing chemical levels in crop plants as well as research in fire ecology and native bird survivability. Briefly after college I worked for a state crime lab analyzing samples from performance animals, looking for illicit drugs using thin-layer chromatography. I left Florida to start a Masters Degree program at the University of Georgia, working with molecular biology techniques to attempt to identify the gene of interest in a cerebellar abiotrophy in pure-bred dogs. While I did that, I completed training as an Emergency Medical Technician and took coursework in Wilderness Search and Rescue at the University of West Georgia. I started a dual degree in veterinary medicine and graduate school, earning a DVM/PhD. My doctoral work was with viral diseases in white-tailed deer. I have spent the last two years in a residency program with the veterinary medical teaching hospital at UC-Davis, and I am now completing my final year of training here in San Diego studying conservation medicine.I have tutored students at all levels, from middle school to graduate school, and I have formally lectured undergraduates, graduate students, veterinary students, and technical college students. I love learning and am an enthusiastic teacher. My teaching philosophy, in a nutshell, centers on involving the student learner. How do they think? What interests them? Engaging students and working to avoid frustrating them is vital to effective teaching. It can be very challenging in a classroom setting, but in tutoring, it is usually a thoroughly adaptable method and enjoyable all around!

I’m currently a rising senior and Presidential Merit Scholar at the University of Southern California. I’m studying biomedical engineering and planning on combining my interests in technology and medicine in my aspirations of becoming a physician.Nonetheless, education and mentorship is a huge part of my life. Throughout my entire college career, I’ve been teaching grades ranging from 3rd grade to high school about subjects ranging from life sciences, physics, and engineering concepts. I’ve also gone through my fair share of standardized testing ranging from the PSAT to the MCAT and really believe I’ve come to learn the tips and tricks you need to succeed on such tests. As a result, I have informally helped a lot of my younger peers through their academic and mental preparation for these exams. I also am very familiar with the college application process and the pre-med/engineering life following, and I would love to be able to mentor/assist anyone who is thinking of a career path in engineering or medicine, or even both as I am pursuing!I’m excited to be able to apply what I know in a meaningful way through tutoring or mentoring, and I look forward to hopefully helping and getting to know anyone who believes they can benefit from my experiences. And of course, as they say at my university, whatever test or course you are going through……Fight on!

A graduate of University of California, Berkeley, with a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.A. in Biology, I have a strong foundation in math and science. Since graduating from college, I have spent my time traveling to France, working a an academic tutor for middle and high school students, volunteering in the Emergency Department of a local hospital, and (most recently) applying to medical school. My favorite part about tutoring is working to engage students to feel as excited and interested as I do towards the material that I teach and hearing my students tell me that they learn more with me in an hour than they do in an entire week of school! When I teach, I strive to let my students know that they are in a safe place where no question is too insignificant to ask while simultaneously encouraging them to be active participants in the sessions so that they can better retain the material we cover and better analyze problems or questions for improved success! Some of my favorite activities outside of work include breaking out some tunes on my violin or guitar, experimenting in the kitchen with cooking various cuisines, staying active outdoors, and playing with my friends' and family's cats.

I love children and children tend to love me. I have years of experience working with kids of all ages as a teacher, a social worker, and a psychotherapist. I understand the motivational and self-confidence issues that interrupt many children's learning, and work to build a solid, trusting relationship with my students so they can feel comfortable acknowledging their mistakes and the places where they need extra attention without feeling ashamed. I operate on a strengths-based, praise-heavy teaching style, and make my students feel like stars (because they are)! I also am trained in mindfulness-based techniques to help children with any anxiety or behavioral issues that get in the way of learning.I have a Master's degree from the University of Southern California (USC), where I graduated as a Dean's Scholar with a 3.98 GPA. Before that, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of California in Irvine. I recently returned from 8 months of teaching English and Math to elementary-school students in Ecuador, and currently work in K-3 classrooms as a literacy specialist at a public elementary school in Santa Rosa. I teach children to read and write, which is such an essential skill! When I'm not teaching kids or traversing the globe, you can find me in a yoga class, reading a fantastic novel under a big tree, tending to my vegetable garden, or having a latte with my grandma.

Graduate of University of California, Berkeley, the premier public university of the U.S. and probably the world, I had studied history and English from some of the most renown historians and literature professors in academia. There I learned the art and rigor of research, reading, writing, and reflective thinking. This December, I will finish a MA at San Francisco State University in English composition, focusing in-depth on all types of writing and how to teach writing to K-12 and university students and business professionals. As a graduate student, I taught a university-level writing-intensive course to freshmen, the type of composition writing course that the AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition exams prepare high school students to study for and get college credit with a high score on the AP exam.I firmly believe that my passion and expertise in writing, literature, and history will help students reach their potential and improve their knowledge, skills, and their passion even if they are not yet engaged with the humanities and social sciences. Knowing many teachers and professors, I also firmly believe that students fall into the cracks of education frequently because of ill-prepared teachers, an overworked system that demands too much time from them without adequate pay and respect, and because most graduate schools of education do not adequately train teachers with evidence-based scholarship and give them the tools they need to succeed. I firmly believe that I and Varsity Tutors can fill this gap in education and in a student's learning by supplementing what schools cannot provide though teachers and professors are very passionate and heartfelt and genuinely care about their students. This is the unique role of the tutor.I can tutor most writing-related courses: AP English courses, AP History courses, SAT Reasoning (reading and writing), high school and university-level courses in writing, English, and history, and even business-related courses for professionals or business majors. In graduate school, I focused on grammar, style, and different types of genres: essays, business writing, grant writing, technical writing, long-form types of writing, and even creative writing. My interests outside my professional life still feed into and enrich my job. I am an aspiring writer in creative nonfiction, novels, short stories, and essays, and I am moving into technical writing with also a deep knowledge of technical subjects that are in high-demand in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. In the summer I teach physics to 8th graders and I worked at the Exploratorium, teaching science to visitors. I am unusual I believe for a humanities person in that I also took electives in physics, mathematics, and chemistry in college, which gives me the confidence and desire to move into technical writing.

The job of a teacher or tutor involves the consideration of many different factors and variables when working with students. It is not as simple as passing on information about a subject or topic. As instructors, we must not only inform, but also explain, clarify, backtrack, bring in outside examples, and respond to challenging questions. We must comfort and relax our students, and help them develop tools for success. We know that our job is challenging, because if our job were easy, then our students wouldn't need us.I feel that it takes someone who is cognizant of all of these things in order to be a truly effective educator. During my 8+ years as a high school chemistry teacher and tutor, I have developed the experience and the skills in order to help students with challenging subjects, and not only to improve their grades, but to improve their understanding and confidence with which they approach their classes. While my own knowledge of chemistry and math is very strong, that means nothing if I can not pass it on to people learning the subjects. That is where I take pride in my abilities though - my students over the years consistently praised my ability to take complex ideas and break them down into relatable and manageable ideas. I have seen countless students struggle initially, only to succeed and flourish with a little bit of effort and assistance. If you are interested in being tutored, you are most likely a bright, hardworking student. Chemistry and math are very difficult subjects to master, and very few people make it through them without the assistance of teachers, peers, or tutors. I am here to help any students that are looking to feel more confident and comfortable, to improve their grades, to gain better understanding of fascinating topics, and to prepare themselves for the rigors of college or graduate school. I will do whatever it takes to help you master the material, drawing on my years of experience and all of the practice I have had with these subjects. I take being an educator very seriously, and I will help anybody that is looking to help themselves.

I am a retired high school teacher. I have taught all levels (9-12 grade), and all aspects of English. No matter what I taught or when I taught it, I have always enjoyed the student-teacher connection more than any other part of teaching.I am especially good at helping with writing no matter the writer's level. Working on writing is a chance to also work on grammar, punctuation, organization, including outlining, and finally writing the paper. If a student learns this process, they can write a response for any situation.Once the process is learned then writing for other classes, all the way from a short answer to a research paper, becomes so much easier! After graduation and entering the work world, knowing how to write a response is a crucial tool. More and more businesses demand their employees write.Be it writing, or any other academic challenge, I hope to help you reach your potential, connect what you are studying to the real world, and have some fun while doing so.

I recently graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a B.S. in Mathematics. From an early age I always loved math and, unlike many of my classmates, took a great pleasure in being introduced to new topics.I like to describe math as a sort of puzzle. Each piece builds off of something else, creating a more complete picture. It's therefore always important to have a solid grasp of the basics - to understand the previous steps - before learning each new topic. My approach to tutoring thus focuses less on memorizing formulas and more on understanding why these work and how you can arrive at them yourself.I have always enjoyed being able to help other people and my somewhat unique outlook on mathematics, coupled with my experienced mathematics background, have enabled me to assist many different people in the past. I have experience in teaching people of different ages and different needs, and I understand how to shift my approach to best reach the student. I served as an instructor at a Judo dojo that I grew up in beginning when I was 14, working with elementary school children. I additionally assisted in a 10th grade Algebra class in my sophomore year of high school, then again in a Calculus class offered at UC Berkeley following my senior year of high school. Furthermore, due to my mathematical background, I've often found myself questioned by friends, family, students, and even parents of students about different topics varying from elementary school material to Multivariable Calculus and beyond.I love mathematics and I hope to spark a similar joy in those that I teach.
