I am a certified teacher and have years of experience working in schools alongside students. I love teaching because it challenges me in ways that I never thought possible. I also love when I help a student achieve something he or she thought was beyond their capability. I will never get tired of witnessing those "a-ha!" moments in my students. Helping a student understand a concept or simply soliciting a smile out of him or her is sometimes all the encouragement a teacher needs.I pride myself on having a positive attitude and confront most situations with a smile. I firmly believe that when you change your mindset you can change the world. I can easily adapt to varying situations and have done so many times in my life. For example, my sense of adventure led me to travel for almost a year after college. I worked alongside families in Italy on their farms and lived out of a backpack. I was in a foreign country living with total strangers who did not always speak my language. I learned to be flexible and to enjoy the unknown. My experience working with students is vast. In the realm of teaching, I completed internships in a variety of schools and subject areas. I worked for a year with severely autistic students and enjoyed being part of a team of people committed to helping this special population. I was a Social Studies teacher for two years and now I currently work in the special education department at a middle school. I also have experience tutoring elementary aged students. In college I volunteered fifteen hours a week as a youth ministry leader. I counseled girls through life's trials and built strong relationships with them. Through that same youth ministry program, I had the opportunity to work most summers at adventure camps. I led teenagers through ropes courses and on mountain biking excursions. It thrilled me to help girls overcome obstacles and confront fears. My time as an assistant basketball coach also satisfied my passion for working with adolescents. I coached a very diverse group of girls and took great pride in watching them overcome their differences and truly bond as a team. There is always something new to learn while working with youth and I am always willing to change or adapt to make things more successful. I hope to create this same attitude in those I tutor. I hope that they leave our session always wanting to learn more after I have helped them work through their academic struggles using my vast knowledge of teaching best practices. In my personal life I like to stay very active and feel the most alive when I get to enjoy the outdoors. I enjoy cooking and gardening and know that by maintaining a healthy lifestyle of eating well and exercising regularly I can be a better role model and tutor.

I am a certified ESL instructor with bachelor's and master's degrees in linguistics. I received my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Illinois in 2006, and my Master of Arts from the Graduate University of Applied Linguistics in Dallas, Texas in 2012. My teaching experience includes one year of teaching elementary classes in South Korea (2009-2010), one year of teaching all ages at a private school in Japan (2013-2014), and one year of teaching adult classes in Pasadena, California (2014-present). I have also tutored students in a variety of subjects and grade levels. In addition to ESL, I offer tutoring in reading, writing, grammar, and test prep for the ACT, SAT, and TOEFL. I love teaching because it allows me to use my passion for language to help other people. I believe that we should always be learning, and that learning should be wonderful and exciting. I strive to inspire my students to curiosity and guide them towards independence in their education. In my free time, I enjoy reading, going out for coffee with friends, and occasionally going dancing.

I love tutoring because it gives me the opportunity to help others enjoy the experience of learning as much as I do. Whether we are editing an essay or reviewing for an exam, I bring a natural passion and energy to my tutoring sessions that inspires my students to discover their own paths towards understanding. By creating a safe environment in which students are encouraged to develop their own critical faculties and to ask the question of "why?", I hope to equip all my clients with a thorough understanding that allows them to achieve mastery over their desired subject matter. After receiving my Bachelor's in English Writing from Azusa Pacific University and my Master's in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary, the bulk of my tutoring experience comes from my work as a Consultant for Fuller's Writing Center. Working as a Consultant for Fuller's Writing Center has given me extensive experience in providing writing and editing instruction to graduate students, which I have also put to use as I have continued to work with my own personal high school and college-level clients. While I enjoy providing instruction for a variety of subjects ranging from history to psychology, I am especially interested in the process of helping others as they learn how to express their views and opinions through the written word. I believe writing is a useful skill in just about any walk of life, and I consider it my privilege and purpose to help others discover their written voice. When I am not working with my wonderful clients, you might find me reading a dusty old novel, watching some sports, playing too many video games, or out walking with my dog, Hans.

I am a recent graduate from CSU Long Beach where I obtained my Master's degree in physics. Before my time in Long Beach, I was a student at UC Davis, where I obtained my BS in physics. I am currently looking to pursue my Ph.D. in physics once accepted to a university. Since my graduation in December, 2013 I have been in the teaching work force. I am currently teaching part-time at both Santa Ana College and Cypress college, where I am an instructor pf physics and astronomy. I also am teaching at local academies as an AP physics instructor for the summer. In addition to this experience, I was teaching for three years during my graduate program teaching lab courses in physics cover topics such as mechanics, electronics, magnetism, and Optics. I enjoying teaching these topics very much, and I love to hear students becoming more fluent in the language and application of the topics. It is truly the greatest reward as an instructor. My teaching style focus around a bottom-up approach. Since I am convinced memorization in physics/astronomy is not useful, I stress learning the most basic form of problems and modifying them based on the question being asked. It may be more difficult for some students, but I believe it leads to a mastery and will make students much more versatile to different questions/topics. When I am not tutoring, I am usually acting in a show or auditioning for film/commercials. I love to hike, run, and play video games in my downtime. I like to think of myself as a highly functioning, active nerd. I look forward to meeting any prospective students interested in learning these amazing topics in the world of physics and astronomy.

AP Spanish Language & Culture Tutor • +13 Subjects

I am currently a graduate student at Point Loma Nazarene University working towards my Masters in Teaching and Learning. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Washington majoring in Communications and minoring in Spanish. While studying at the undergraduate level, I studied abroad in Spain to further my knowledge of the Spanish culture and language. I also spend my summers working as an Assistant Program Director at a summer camp for orphan children in Mexico. I have a passion for teaching and I love sharing that passion with students. I believe that all students are capable of success and it is simply a matter of finding the right path for each student. Another one of my passions is writing. As a student, essays can be challenging and sometimes overwhelming. I love calming students and their fears about essays, guiding them through the writing process by pulling information out of them that was already there to begin with. As an educator and a tutor, I strive to transform information into something understandable and appetizing to the learner. Regurgitating information is simply not enough. We only truly learn when we can take the information out of context and apply it to different situations. Every person learns in a different way and every student deserves a comprehensible education.

I graduated from the University of California Berkeley in 2013 with a degree in Integrative Biology. In addition, I have also received a Masters in Biomedical Science from the Tufts School of Medicine this past summer. Since graduation, I have been applying to medical schools around the country and my hope is to one day work as a surgeon. I am knowledgeable in a vast range of subjects related to math and science but the subjects I love the most are anything related to biology, especially human physiology. The human body performs amazing feats every day in order to keep us alive and to help us heal when we are injured. Everyday scientists learn something new about the body which is why I love physiology. In addition, I reviewed for the MCAT by myself with my own exceptional strategies and so I am very comfortable helping students with every section of the test. When I tutor, I tailor my teaching style so that I can pinpoint the exact misunderstanding my student has with the concepts/material they are trying to learn. This style makes me an efficient and effective tutor. I am a huge NBA fan and I also love to choreograph hip-hop dance during my downtime. Playing a little video games during one’s free time also does not hurt =).

I have always appreciated education and the many ways it is relevant to our life. I am a recent college graduate from UC Riverside with a BA in Psychology. Being able to say that I have a college education is a privilege and an honor to me because I feel I am making a difference in my life and my family's life being the first one to graduate from college. Along the way I had many struggles and difficulties being an immigrant to the US. I did not know English or had any friends or family other than my parents and brothers. I worked really hard and good people supported me in my journey. I know how hard getting an education can be and how students can feel overwhelmed with accomplishing their dreams. That is why I would do my best as a Varsity Tutor to influence and help students grow in their journey as productive members of our society. The journey starts from a young age and developing good habits and a positive mind set is valuable from an early age. I am delighted to be part of Varsity Tutors and making a difference in students life.
