I am a USC graduate with a degree in Business Administration and an emphasis in Accounting. I also teach basic accounting and nonprofit accounting at UCLA extension. I have volunteered to mentor students in the past and have privately tutored young kids in reading and phonics. I am a business leader and have been a Controller for various companies in the past - from small to large, start-ups, for profit and nonprofit. I love children and teens and am very patient. I am also a Christian and am doing consulting for small businesses as needed on the side. I have done many presentations in front of boards of directors, taught a high school and college class and kidz church with kids ranging from 4-12 yrs old. I also organized and co-lead a Kool Kidz program reaching out to a low-income community of kids from 4-15 yrs old, mentoring and teaching them the word of God using skits, games and fun. I have also taught kids how to do math and, in everything, it was done with fun!

I am currently working towards a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, with a focus on probability and statistics, at the University of California, San Diego. I've tutored mathematics when I was in high school for a year, have informally tutored friends and family, and am currently tutoring a student taking Algebra 2 in community college. I tutor math up to Calculus 2, SAT II Math, and SAT test prep. My favorite subject to tutor is math because I love problem solving and the precise logical clarity of math. I also sometimes end up conceptualizing concepts in a different or more fundamental way than I did previously, which leads me to understand the subject more deeply even while I am tutoring it. I try to tutor in a way that involves asking the student questions and leading them to discover the answer/procedure for themselves, so that they understand why they are using certain methods and can apply them to novel situations rather than depending on rote memorization. Outside of academia, I enjoy playing music (guitar and drums), and although I listen to all kinds of music, I primarily enjoy playing blues, jazz, and rock. I also like to read (I was definitely a bookworm as a child) both fiction and non-fiction. My favorite fiction author is by far Proust, and my interests in non-fiction include math, music, and politics.

I am passionate about Computer Science and the related fields, and love to spread my knowledge to others. I am currently attending San Jose State University to achieve my degree in Software Engineering with a focus on graphics programming and Machine Learning/AI. What I believe makes me such a great tutor in Computer Science areas is that I taught myself programming six years ago, so I understand all the struggles that someone who is trying to learn programming are going through. In my free time I'm often playing (or creating) video games, or researching the latest technology to see if I can work it into my life and experiment with it.

While earning my degree I had the opportunity of taking part in undergrad research at my university, and the privilege of participating in a student internship program at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. This experience has given me some perspective in appreciating the scope and possibilities in science.But while doing so I have also practiced my other passion--instruction and education in this field and related subjects by working as a tutor for high school students in the subjects of math, science, and in test preparation. I also have experience in a job after graduation as a tutor of university students in college level courses, from remedial math and science classes to more advanced second and third year physics courses.After several years working as a laboratory technician at a fuel cell research and design company, I am returning to this latter passion as I pursue a teaching credential program at the University of Dominguez Hills. In my view, the best approach to teaching is not one that just instructs you in procedures by rote memorization and repetition (although these may be necessary and useful in achieving success), but also one that guides you to acquire the needed tools and critical thinking skills to not only learn the procedures needed for math, science, or standardized tests, but to also hopefully understand the subject sufficiently to develop your own techniques in many different situations, or to possibly apply them in your area your interest.This is achieved by identifying your level of understanding, making sure you know or learn any needed background information, and to also sometimes explain and give you an insight into the motivation for the formulas, techniques or procedures pertaining to the subject at hand, and relating them to different examples and applications in real life in order to make them less abstract. In whichever approach I may take, in the end my aim is to demystify and make these subjects less intimidating to you, since I more than likely have gone through similar frustrations in my education.

I have helped many people with difficult concepts and homework for a long time, specifically children I babysat or friends in my classes. The subjects I am offering tutoring for are Elementary Math, Algebra 1, Geometry, Middle School Math, Pre-Algebra, and Spanish up to level 4. I am also able to help with study skills and organization. I love to tutor math, mainly because it makes sense and is a lot of fun once it makes sense!
